PALIN'S BAD TIMING.... Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), about 20 hours after President Obama apologized for his Special Olympics joke gone awry, condemned the president in a press release. "I hope President Obama's comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community," the controversial governor said, adding that she was "shocked" at the poor attempt at humor, which was "degrading" for "precious and unique people."
As Greg Sargent reports, her timing could have been better.
[L]ess than 24 hours before hitting Obama this way, Palin turned down nearly $40 million in Federal funding for programs catering to special education kids.
The funding for special needs kids, it turns out, is buried in all that stimulus money for Alaska that Palin drew national criticism for turning down last week.
Specifically, the recovery package passed by Congress and signed into law by the president would have directed around $36 million to Alaska in Individuals with Disabilities Education Act money, including funding for the same Americans who participate in the Special Olympics.
We can hope that Gov. Palin's position on this federal funding does not reflect how she truly feels about the special needs community.
For what it's worth, last week, around the same time Obama was talking to Jay Leno, Palin was talking about rejecting stimulus aid. Explaining her decision to turn down aid, Palin complained about the dangers of "growing government," and described recovery funds as "a bribe."
Today, facing public criticism, Palin's lieutenant governor said Palin isn't necessarily rejecting the stimulus aid, but just wants a public debate about the funding.
Funny, I thought the "bribe" line made her position rather clear.

Funny, I would think if there was a bribe involved, that Palin would be all over that. She is a bit ethically and morally challenged.

Palin, sheesh, I'd say I can't believe her, but I knew a lot of people like her growing up in small town Alaska. Usually they are the annoying lady at church who thinks they know everything but actually know nothing. This political posturing regarding special needs kids is especially sad in Alaska, with its sky high percentage of fetal alchohol syndrome kids.
Sad.

Why do you liberals keep taking what we say so literally? Are you that stupid as to believe that we mean what we say?
Our talk about the stimulus spending should not be taken literally. We want the money, especially in our red states like Alaska and the deep South; where we have thrived upon federal dollars.
Our talk is to provide bromides to our low information voters and talking points for our corporate media echo chambers. Of course we will take the money. We just reserve the 'right' to talk trash and pretend that we are opposed to government spending. That way, with a wink & a nod, we can have it both ways. Naturally, our allies in the true (corporate) media will not call us on it.

Governors Palin, Sanford and Jindal really look pretty stupid right now for various reasons (volcanos, special education, school infrastructure)
David Gregory on Meet The Press this Sunday wanted to make an issue of the Special Olympics gaffe. Fortunately, Governor: Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) responded. He said he knew that President Obama admired and supports the Special Olympics. They had spoken about the Special Olympics before the gaffe was made. Arnold also said that he himself had said things in the past that he regretted and had to apologize later.
I thought his response was just perfect. It was genuine and passionate. I think it really took David Gregory by surprise. There really wasn't anything to say after that response. I can't imagine anyone would not be able to give the president the benefit of the doubt on the gaffe. He called the Chairman of the Special Olympics before the Leno show was aired and apologized.
The fact that there was funding in the stimulus for special education really says a lot. Palin will have to twist herself into a pretzel to get out of this one.

Palin knows these kids don't need a handout from the government; they need a tax cut.

What MsJoanne said. I don't think the raiding Wasillabilly is above taking a bribe.
Maybe if they gave her the stimulus funds in the form of Neiman Marcus apparel?

Why are we even discussing Palin's reasoning process, it does not exist, it's like discussing why a doll with a pull string keeps repeating the phrases.
"Lower taxes" "Smaller Government" "Liberal Media Bad" "I Can See Russia" "Africa is a Country"

Why do children with special needs want to destroy our God-given free market?

If these kids are so needy, maybe they should have picked different parents.

We knew she would have to comment on this, after repeatedly trotting out and displaying, like a prize cheese, her special needs family member. She scalds my ass !

I too saw MTP. As usual, David Gregory was trying to give legs to this complete nonstory to bash Obama but Arnold cut his legs off before he could get started. I hate to admit it, but sometimes the terminator really does cut through the bullshit. He's certainly far better than that despicable piece of shit ignoramus, Palin.

The less the right like Ahhnold the more I like him. I really thought he was dumb when he started , but he has proven himself a standard bearer for "rational conservatism" (which is why the base hates him)

Only if you think she's made it clear whether or not she accepts bribes.

Go check out mudflats blog, if you don't already:

Stuff on Mt. Redoubt, protests against Palin and a post on the mudflats author infiltrating a Republican fundraiser that Palin attended. It's quite funny. It's here:

Just to be clear, Palin never meant to imply that bribes were bad.

Y'know, putting a few sparrow feathers on a buzzard doesn't change things; the bird is still a buzzard. And putting lipstick on a pig doesn't do much for the bad smell emanating from the pig....

And maybe God doesn't like Sarah Palin so much either.

I think Schwarzenegger is an idiot with a strong tendency to substitute macho posturing for reasoned discourse. However, that still makes him far more reasonable than the lying, hypocritical assholes that make up the majority of Republican officeholders these days.

I'm sorry, but Alaska would probably be alot better off if one of those "precious, special needs" kids was running that state right now. This woman IS retarded!

Was she lugging her own "Sssspecial, Precioussss" child when she turned down the funds for special ed for her state? And when she chastised Obama for an ill-considered comment vs Special Olympics? Wouldn't surprise me, remembering her turkey pardon of last T-giving -- delivered in front of the turkey head-grinder...

I see Palin is adhering to Republican Rule for Living #2: It's not what you do, it's what you say. As long as you make all the right noises about the poor crippled kids, it doesn't matter if you slash their funding, because the words you said are more important than the actions you took.
(Republican Rule for Living #1: Anything they say is always projection. Always.)
