FRIDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* In the wake of Arlen Specter's flip on EFCA, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is no longer interested in seeing the Pennsylvania Republican switch parties.

* Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) got a little good news for a change, when a new Research 2000 poll showed him with a five-point lead over his likely Republican challenger, former Rep. Rob Simmons, 45% to 40%.

* According to a Republican pollster, Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan (D) has an early lead in the open Senate race in Missouri next year. She leads former House Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R) by four, 47% to 43%.

* Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) will apparently start his re-election bid facing an uphill climb. A Suffolk University shows only 34% of Massachusetts voters want to give Patrick another term, while 47% believe it's time for someone else. Patrick's approval rating stands at just 40%.

* The DNC seems to really enjoy picking fights with Karl Rove.

* Some prominent conservatives in Louisiana decided to skip a primary challenge to Sen. David Vitter (R) recently, but Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne (R) is still mulling the possibility.

* Former Sen. Lincoln Chafee is reportedly poised to launch a gubernatorial run in Rhode Island. Chafee, a Republican until he was defeated in 2006, would reportedly run as an independent.

* South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) is lining up far-right friends for 2012.

* And Sarah Palin told Alaska Republicans this week that she couldn't find McCain campaign staffers during the 2008 race with whom to worship. "[N]obody I could find that I wanted to hold hands with and pray," the Alaska governor said. McCain campaign aides are, of course, pushing back.

Although the link to the Palin item doesn't work, and maybe the answer to my question is in the source, why in God's name would Palin want to say such a thing even if true?

Sarah Palin, even if you wouldn't want to hold my hand in Christian fellowship, I'll still pray for you.

Our country is fortunate to have such great potential leaders for the republican party to choose from in 2012.

For governor Sanford, the obvious keys to the nomination are to lock in the support of Grover Norquist and to undercut RushBo's support of Palin. Naturally, demonstrating that he is willing to throw the workers of his state 'under the bus' is a valuable step in the process.

For governor Palin, the obvious key to the nomination is to have her own prayer group with her throughout the nomination process. If it wasn't for the liberal media and the lack of McCain staff to pray with, she would undoubtably be vice president right now.

Hmmm. CNN seems to have taken down the Palin piece. I had it in my roundup last night, and it worked when I checked the links last night when I posted, but it isn't working now. Wonder what's up with that?

CJColucci,

The race for the base is on. Sarah is trying to lock in the zealot vote, so she's putting some distance between old Washington and herself.

By saying she was pious and no one on McCain's staff was, she's saying she's closer to god.

"[N]obody I could find that I wanted to hold hands with and pray," the Alaska governor said.

Where was Joe the Plumber? You would think he'd be into snake-handling...

Wingnut Monica Crowley has a phone campaign against the Obama budge proposal going, so we need to call the Senate and House Budget Offices to express SUPPORT for Obama's budget, lest we be stuck with the GOP Bubble Budget! Spread the word:

The Senate Budget Office: 202-224-0642
The House Budget Office: 202-226-7200

Awesome topic!

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick couldn't get elected dog catcher at the moment. I don't see how he gets re-elected. Toll hikes and the gas tax are all people talk about around here.

St Sarah is correct - With the vast population explosion, God will only hear prayers, once a quorum has been established.

As a Deval Patrick supporter, I think it would do the Commonwealth, the Democratic Party and Patrick himself a favor if his good friend, President Obama found a position for Patrick in the administration. Deval came out of the blocks stumbling after 2006 and has never recovered. Smart guy, just poor political instincts. He would do well in a cabinet post.

Sarah Palin goes back to Alaska, keeps her mouth shut and hunkers down to governing, but you guys can't shut up about her.

Nice.

doubtful:
I had the same idea, but Palin already has those votes. She doesn't need to slam the alleged lack of piety of anonymous staffers from the last campaign with the heathen McCain. It won't get her any votes she wasn't getting anyway, and will just piss other voters off. So why do it?
Then again, maybe she's just that stupid or mean.

On the subject of Campaign Round-up, check this out regarding ex-Sen. Norm Coleman:

If Deval Patrick has very little chance of winning, and everyone knows it, why doesn't someone challenge him in the primary? Why is incumbency more important to people than having the best possible representation?

(Note that I know the answer to that - because power to the parties is all that matters - but it's an important question even to ask.)

Sarah Palin goes back to Alaska, keeps her mouth shut

Geez, if what she's doing is "keeping her mouth shut" I'd hate to see her really trying for publicity.

Let's see....speaks at fundraising dinners, starts a national PAC, grants interview to Greta, chimes in stupidly on Obama's dumb joke, offers this interview...yeah, keeping her mouth shut all right. For her.

"[N]obody I could find that I wanted to hold hands with and pray,"

Praying is only for special people.

MO Senatorial race should be interesting. Still a lot of ill will for Baby Blunt throughout the State. Hopefully has rubbed off on good old Roy.

Be nice if MO gets a Democratic Senator. Sorry, McCaskill who proudly votes with the Republicans more often than not does not qualify for that distinction IMO.

In terms of Patrick...this country hates the guys that are forced to clean up after Rethugs trash the place.
Mitt the twit sure left us in a good ole hole.

Well Vitters IS the sitting senator. I said "sitting".

Posted by: Dale on March 27, 2009 at 4:13 PM | PERMALINK

That's an interesting phrasing she uses there, "[N]obody I could find that I wanted to hold hands with and pray." That's not the same as saying there's nobody who would pray with her. What it sounds like she's saying is that there was nobody she found worthy of praying with.

Patrick might stand a better chance at re-election if he would drop his moronic idea to increase the gas tax by 0.19/gallon.

Why is it that during good economic times, politicians of both parties practically fall all over themselves to cut taxes on businesses and the wealthiest members of society, and then, when good times go bad, try to balance their budgets by increasing regressive taxes and user fees?
