EXPANDING NATIONAL SERVICE.... The Senate easily approved legislation last night that would "broadly expand national community service programs." Naturally, the far-right is livid.
The bill will increase the number of positions available in AmeriCorps from 75,000 to 250,000, and will create "new cadres of volunteers focused on education, clean energy, health care and veterans." The House is expected to endorse the Senate version next week, and will be signed into law by President Obama soon after.
What's more, this has become largely a bipartisan issue. While President Clinton's AmeriCorps initiative in 1993 was largely rejected by Republican lawmakers, last night's vote wasn't close -- 79 senators supported the expanded national service opportunities, including a majority of the Senate Republican caucus. Indeed, there were even a half-dozen GOP co-sponsors.
So, now that both parties see the value in national service, the issue can be added to the (short) list of policy areas where there's widespread agreement? Not quite yet.
Consider the reaction this week from right-wing bloggers. One compared community service programs to "Hitler youth." Malkin called this a "left-wing slush fund." WorldNetDaily said, well, the kind of nonsense WorldNetDaily always says.
Before Drudge and Fox News convince gullible news consumers -- and a little too much of the media establishment -- that "national service" is code for authoritarianism, let's point out two key observations. First, there's nothing in the legislation requiring public service. It's about expanding service opportunities for those who choose to pursue them.
Second, it's a bipartisan bill. It passed the Senate with 79 votes, and passed the House with 321 votes. Why on earth would conservative Republican lawmakers vote for a "left-wing slush fund" that would create some kind of "Hitler youth"-style program?

"Why on earth would conservative Republican lawmakers vote for a "left-wing slush fund" that would create some kind of "Hitler youth"-style program?"
For that matter, why on earth would liberal Democratic lawmakers vote for a "left-wing slush fund" that would create some kind of "Hitler youth"-style program?
Answer: They wouldn't.

Now if only they could make mandatory military service a requirement. Wanna see how fast the wingers will abandon the military?

No, no, you don't get it Steve. Who volunteers for Americorps? Hippies. Americorps funds a lot of teachers in poor areas. The federal government is merely expanding its brainwashing campaign of the poor to insure they vote Democrat.

The right is livid (a typical state for them - red-faced, bug-eyed feral nutbombs, just watch O'Reilly) no matter what we try to do about the unemployed. If we just give them money, the right is livid, if we come up with programs to at least give them something to do, the right is livid. They want to say, just quit taxing corporations and everyone gets to work or etc., but forget natural business cycles, the effect of changing interest rates by the Fed (including deliberate attempts to lower employment, etc - any nation with a modern monetary system does not and cannot have a natural, independent "free economy" in principle ...)

On a related note, I wish somebody would start a website listing all companies that advertise on Beck, O'Reilly, Morning Joe, Hannity, Limbaugh, and others who have unabashed records of misinformation and hate. I generally listen to these programs to see what kind of nonsense they're spewing (and because I don't have any liberal alternatives in Atlanta), and I try to remember who's out there supporting them financially. However, it's hard to keep track (I recently stopped taking my business to my local UPS Store since they're a big underwriter of Beck's radio and television program.)
I'm sure that we could cost these advertisers a lot of business (and possibly make a difference in cable/broadcast and network programming) if progressives just had a single page that we could refer to in order to eliminate vendors for the products and services we purchase.
Anyone?

The right is livid about just about everything, but mostly about the fact that they are out of power.

The difference between something acceptable to the far right and having them call this a "Hitler youth" program is that the words "faith-based" are missing from the bill's language. Throw in some Jesus and they'd be cool with it.
They also hate that word "cadres."

Death by a thousand cuts requires that the cutting be continuous. So, the far right complains constantly. Eventually, the individual complaints are forgotten, but the constancy of complaining is remembered and that can be tied to whatever they then seize on to mount substantive attacks. There are elements of this that are similar to a bullfight. The bull is not going to be dispatched by the picadors, but the ritual of the picadors is not without meaning. Repetition works for our side too, and repeating that these baseless attacks are the work of hacks who put bringing down Obama's presidency higher than saving our country from significant economic peril.

It's a compromise. They accept the "left-wing slush fund" in order to get a "Hitler youth"-style program.

So, the Malkin-Beck video-- one hysterical bit of idiocy-- was taken down from youtube. For the moment, at least, here's another link:

Quality on this isn't first rate (someone recorded it with a cell phone or a home cam), but it's all there. It's a laugh riot (if you don't cry).

CJ, go over to thinkprogress.org for the O'Reilly list. Also, so this national service isn't closely related to Repub's faith-based efforts? Jeesh, are these rightwingers a bunch of assholes.

Wowie zowie. The comments thread from the volunteerism = Hitler Youth thread are, predictably, scary.
I would not let any child of mine to be involved in this. In fact I would show them how to use a rifle first.

You can buy all the guns you like but we need to start shouting in our nrighborhoods.
We're a mere 67 days into the Obama administration. One can only hope that these people will drop out of society and go join an isolated militia group on a farm in Iowa or something.

The Gateway Pund-Idiot is an embarrassment to my fair state. At least he's over on the other side of it in the other big, blue city.
