SO MUCH FOR BEING AN 'ALBATROSS'.... In January, Fox News contributor Juan Williams went after Michelle Obama, describing her as a political "liability" for the president. As Williams argued, the First Lady has "got this Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going," which may make her "something of an albatross."
So much for that idea. The Washington Post's Lois Romano reports:
At first, they didn't like the way she was talking about her husband's dirty socks. Then, they said she always looked angry. Later, they questioned her patriotism when she commented that she only recently became proud of her country. They even made hay over her biceps when she dared show up sleeveless for her husband's address to Congress in January.
Now, two months into her husband's presidency, as Michelle Obama embarks on her maiden official overseas trip, the first lady is enjoying a second look from the American public -- particularly from those who were put off by her as a candidate's wife, but are warming to her as the president's wife.
A Washington Post-ABC News survey conducted over the past few days shows a dramatic turnaround: Her favorability ratings are at 76 percent, up 28 points since summer. The number of people who view her negatively has plummeted.
Now, I think Romano's assumptions about previous public attitudes are a stretch. She writes, matter of factly, that Americans didn't like the way Michelle Obama spoke, looked, or dressed. I've seen no evidence to support this. There are plenty of members of the political elite in D.C. who felt this way, but to say this is how "the American public" felt is dubious, at best.
That said, the larger point is certainly true -- most of the country likes what they see from the First Lady, and she's getting more popular as time goes on. In June, 48% had a favorable impression of Michelle Obama, while 29% had an unfavorable impression. Now, 76% feel good about the president's spouse, and only 16% don't.
It seems efforts to smear Michelle Obama (see Bruce, Tammy) aren't connecting.

She has grace, intelligence, humor. No wonder people like Tammy Bruce (whoever the hell she is)attack her. She has everything they lack. But they can try to smear Michelle Obama all they want - nothing is going to stick.

Well, you can't expect someone to write that column and admit up front that the elites and the republican shills were, of course, lying when they told us how we were all supposed to feel about Michelle Obama. And I have to say that although I'm totally not that kind of person--a people magazine kind of person--the first thing I did this morning was check Huffington post to see if they had any pictures of the President and the First lady leaving for their European trip. I blush to say it, but I wanted to see just how dynamic and elegant they both looked. Because I'm thrilled that they are going to be representing our country abroad. And they didn't dissapoint. Michelle looked stunning. I doubt very much that I'm alone in being so interested in having Michelle as our goodwill ambassador around the world.

Again Steve, you missed the point!
The DC media elite are "the amerikan public" and they don't like either of the uppity Obamas.

"She writes, matter of factly, that Americans didn't like the way Michelle Obama spoke, looked, or dressed. I've seen no evidence to support this. "
No question. As I canvassed for Obama for 3 months last summer and fall, I heard only positive things about Michelle and his family, regardless if the house was red, blue or none of the above.

Steve - 11 posts (not including the 'I'm back' post) by 2:00?!? Didn't anyone tell you about easing back into things after a vacation? :-)
Also... Juan Williams can suck it. I hope Michelle kicks his pathetic butt.

Let me second Whichwich. I NEVER look a pix of celebrities, etc., and am way off to Obama's left. But I think Michelle is fantastic, I really like the way she's opening up the White House to school kids, giving a lot of glamorous parties, and I always look at the slide shows on the HuffPost too. And I'm not too worried that her magnificent mind is being wasted on that kind of stuff, since I think it's really important.

But she's so ANGRY!

Michelle Obama is a first rate human being. Smart, tough, disciplined, and extraordinarily well prepared for public service, she is an outstanding representative of our nation. The petty attacks from the Villagers and Republicans should be spurned as beneath contempt, revealing as they do the less appealing side of human nature.

Just because Maureen Dowd is fixated on Michelle Obama's biceps doesn't mean the whole world is.

Their basic problem with Michelle Obama is that she's the first smoking hot First Lady in christonlyknows how long. And she's a Democrat.
That is simply not allowed to happen. Don't you know that Michael Moore is fat? Fat = Democrat. It even rhymes. Get with the program, people!

I would not rely on Juan Williams' "analysis" for anything. He is both Fox "news" and NPR's equal opportunity hire. Nice polite republican colored guy

Juan Williams has a special place in my heart along with Jonah Goldberg. I cancelled my generous annual contributions to two public radio stations until they fire Williams and any other Fox News contributors, and cancelled my 20+ year subscription to the LATimes after they fired Robert Scherer and hired Jonah Goldberg.

Well, I am. She got me back on the free weights when almost nothing else could break through my winter apathy. Thanks, Mrs. Obama!

With few exceptions (Imelda Marcos maybe), going after a political leader by attacking the spouse is a mug's game, especially when the criticisms are sub-idiotic. No wonder they're losers.

So true that it was the elite not liking Michelle. My Republican sister-in-law voted Obama BECAUSE she related to, and really loved, Michelle.

Michelle Obama is a class act. The change in her favorability rating shows that people really didn't know her during the campaign which means they had an uninformed opinion of her. She is very real and that is so very refreshing to see truth and honesty in living color.

If Juan Williams calls Michelle Obama an "Albatross", he's probably right. Since the Republican Party is the Party of Albatrosses, Juan should know. Juan Williams is one more albatross you can add to the growing list -- like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, Michael Steele, Norm Coleman. Like Coals to Newscastle, the Republicans are a Rogues' Gallery of Albatrosses.

They didn't ask me. I got enough of her BEFORE November 4. I don't even buy magazines any more because the Obama's are everywhere. Seems like he's been TOTUS FOREVER!

I wish they had asked me. I cannot get enough of them. They are smart, interesting, good people who love each other dearly. After 8 years of an idiot and and iceberg, I'm riding the wave for all it's worth. Plus the world finally is envious of our president and first lady. So, there.

Personally, I think they all know that President Obama and First Lady Obama, are becoming the country's most popular first couple, setting the standards for role models. That is pretty frightening for some, but not for me. I think it is not only refreshinging but inspiring as well. I think, what you see from them is what you get, so get used to it, at least for 4 years and if we are fortunate, 8.

You're right, Rena, no one asked you.
BTW - the "TOTUS" thing, just illustrates what an incredible moron you are. Leave it behind if you want even a shred of credibility.

Michelle Obama is a lady, in every sense of the word. She is smart, she is educated, beautiful and sexy, she is committed to her family, and the most importantly she owns the words that she speaks.
She is a woman of substance someone we have needed in the Whitehouse for a long time.
She is the President's wife but, she has a quality of character that is all her own, it shows in her mannerism.
She is Michelle Robinson-Obama, not just Mrs. Obama. She was Michelle first, not just the Barracks wife.
If her character is what constitutes an albatross please teach me how to be an albatross, in fact I sure there are many other women out there that would prefer to be an albatross with her qualities than not.

Just another example of the GOP's desperation and continuing character assasination. If it were not such an insult to Roy Orbison's memory, I would nominate "Running Scared" as their anthem. The Obamas are a class act.

"Funny"... I have a Republican acquaintance who couldn't bring herself to vote for Obama, even post Sarah Palin, but who has reconciled herself to him "because, you know, if Michelle picked him, he's probably OK". She's totally "in love" with Michelle and the kids. She'd be totally surprised to hear that Michelle is supposed to be an "albatross".

I love both of them and pray for their success. I don't agree with every position the President takes, but I feel better just knowing Michelle is there. Where facing extremely difficult times, and I think she will be able to provide much needed support and clarity when he's overwhelmed by it all.

Exactly how OLD are you? are you harkening for the days of Jim Crow when "uppity" people were kept in "their place"? Sad indeed if you cannot see what a chance at redemption the US has been offered through the Obamas.

SOV is being sarcastic but sometimes can't phrase it obviously. He's picking on the media for getting on Michelle, not supporting it. I've seen enough of his comments to be fairly sure he's not a dextro.

The United States of America has an intelligent, attractive, sophisticated and beautiful first lady who is equally matched with the President. I speak as a descendent of Pilgrims who came to Plymouth. Our Constitution is in good hands again.

I like the Obamas. They behave respectful of each other and don't act as though they think they are better than other human beings. The Obamas, so far, have displayed that they are full of wisdom and I think that is very good for this country. What good is intelligence without it. I feel very safe with Barack Obama as my President and the reason why he and Michelle remain popular with the people is that we can all feel the love they exude. It makes us feel happy in the midst of our problems. Juan Williams, Riley, Hannity, Limbaugh and those who can't think of anything decent to say about our Commander in Chief and his wife don't like themselves. Respect comes from the guts. They don't have any.

I find it interesting, and annoying, that the media and many in the world of politics are so out of touch with the American people. Try as they may, Barack Obama and his fascinating family have captured the hearts and minds of the people. What's not to like? The Obamas are a beautiful family, intelligent, articulate, sincere and real. They are from the people and for the people and they are way ahead of the pack when it comes to knowing what the people need and want. Change has come to America and the Obamas are riding that wave. They are being true to their words. What a refreshing reality.
