FRIDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:
* There was a brutal rampage at an immigration services center in Binghamton, New York, this afternoon. A gunman, according to the most recent reports, killed as many as 13 people before apparently committing suicide.
* Attorney General Eric Holder wants to release classified Bush-era torture memos. Intelligence officials at the CIA and elsewhere are raising "holy hell" over the prospect.
* Sens. Evan Bayh and Ben Nelson really ought to feel ashamed over their budget votes yesterday.
* There's new evidence that arctic sea ice is melting faster than expected. (thanks to R.K. for the tip)
* It won't help the right's crusade against Harold Koh, President Obama's choice as the State Department's legal advisor, that Ted Olson has endorsed the nomination. Olson, one of the most prominent Republican attorneys in Washington and Bush's former solicitor general, called Koh "a brilliant scholar and a man of great integrity."
* Wall Street has seen gains for four weeks in a row.
* This will only bolster John McCain's reputation as a hothead.
* D.C. voting rights in the House got a little closer to reality today.
* Rod Blagojevich is now facing a 19-count felony indictment. The charges include racketeering conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion conspiracy, attempted extortion and making false statements to federal agents.
* Joe Klein makes the case for legalizing marijuana.
* Bachmann's insane proposal for a constitutional amendment on U.S. currency continues to pick up additional Republican support.
* There are some wounds time can't heal -- Bush and Cheney are still very unpopular.
* And finally, when it comes to anal poisoning, it seems Rush Limbaugh has a one-track mind.
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Note that Bayh voted against the budget because of worries about the deficit, and voted for the quarter-trillion-dollar give away to multi-millionaires ON THE SAME DAY.

Has anyone read anything defending the constitutionality of the DC voting right act?
I'm willing to be persuaded, but it sure looks unconstitutional to me.

Where's Luther with one of his lovely anti-immigrant rants? This seems like a great day for one.

This is the Massacre of the Week. There will continue to be massacres, and they will occur once a week. Last week it was Maryville IL, and before that it was Georgia.
Get used to it folks. It's America at its best. No American needs to sit around after being laid off and polish their resume. It's much more satisfying to shoot a bunch of immigrants.
So, don't just sit there, Sam, get that gun and shoot somebody!! Take that high-capacity magazine and SHOOT A BUNCH!!!
It's fun, it's American, and it's constitutionally mandated.

Wall Street has seen gains for four weeks in a row.
I've been looking around for someone to tell me that W's E-co-nomics have started to kick in after the disastrous election of the tax and spend black man. Maybe I'm looking under the wrong rocks.

There's a persistant rumor that in the early 70's Rush was fired from his AM radio disk jockey gig in Pittsburgh after getting busted for engaging in public sex with a football player from Pitt. Pitt has never had a woman's football team.
Along the same lines, a gay freind tells me that in the pre-internet days of Compuserve, Rush was a semi regular in the gay chat room there.
Whether there is truth to either of these rumors is beyond me, but it certainly fits with his ankle grabbing, anal obsessions. He has always struck me as a closeted gay man, in deep and angry denial about his sexuality.

Jeez, I hit the Drudge page, and the ad that ran at the top was "WANT TO WIN FREE GUNS - CLICK HERE TO ENTER" with an assault rifle scrolling past.
Nice ad to show up when the headline reads: (underlined) 'RAMPAGE AT NY IMMIGRATION CENTER"

That rampage in Binghamton took place exactly a block away from where I lived the last two years. I just moved away recently. Gah, I am sorry for everyone involved. And I am not looking forward to either the paranoia in the Bing, nor the people trying to cash in on a tragedy in both political parties.

Excuse me, but Rod Blagojevich is only facing 16 of those 19 felony counts! You make him sound like a criminal!

Science is divided on whether arctic ice is melting or simply weeping at the needless errors of the Democratic caucus, which are endangering its ability to retain the majority after 2010. Don't despair, however...new data shows how to convert litterbox contents to clean, efficient fuel:

Good grief! Palin's extended family seems to be hell-bent on becoming heroes of the best soap opera, ever. Now, the Dud's half-sister has been arrested for *burglary*!

And, "Quarreler"... Don't know about "litterbox contents" but our carpetbagger Governor wanna-be (McAuliffe) swears by chickenshit and is staking his campaign and VA future on it. Kid you not.

This has gotta have meth at the bottom of it.
I presume, exlibra, that you've heard about Levi "Muzzled No More" Johnston's upcoming interview on some talk show on Monday. Apparently a highlight is his remark that he assumes Sarah knew he and Bristol were having sex, since they shared a bedroom at Chez Palin with Sarah's and Todd's knowledge.

Quote of the week
Mrs. O: I never cut class. I loved getting As, I liked being smart. I liked being on time. I thought being smart is cooler than anything in the world.
Our country desperately needs good teachers who can bring that very attitude to the classroom. There has never been a more needier moment. If you got talent and can teach, get your butt into a classroom. Those who can: should. Those who can't: go sell derivatives or something...

Off topic, but sorta funny.
Check out one of the winger blogs from my neck of the woods. They are having a serious discussion about which actors should play which characters in a film adaptation of Atlas Shrugged.

Bachmann's insane proposal for a constitutional amendment on U.S. currency continues to pick up additional Republican support.
The ReRushlickins see this as a tactical way to pick up enthusiasm from their nuttiest base. That they would profane something as serious as amending the USC for political gain is disgraceful and shows what sort we are dealing with.
BTW I don't even see mention of her NASCAR A1-fool column that was presented April 1, apparently she just pulled it and put something else up in it's place with no retraction/apology. I guess that figures. I do note she quotes Stieglitz of all people about privatized gains and socialized losses. She couldn't pass up criticism of Obama, and didn't even see the irony that it explains the flaws as from being not progressive enough.

It's late Friday. The President is overseas. The White House dumps this bit of news on us.
WASHINGTON (Reuters)Lawrence Summers, a top economic adviser to U.S. President Barack Obama, was paid about $5.2 million in compensation by hedge fund D.E. Shaw during the past year, according to financial disclosure forms released on Friday by the White House.
[...]
Summers was also paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaking fees from major Wall Street firms and financial institutions, including JP Morgan, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers, the forms showed.
I think it's time for Larry to go.
Posted by: rege on April 3, 2009 at 8:32 PM | PERMALINK
Well, the NASCAR comment is still there so it's missing the retraction (Ann would never care.)
Summers - just shows that Obama is too cozy with the Wall Street crowd. Some socialist!

in a telephone conversation on october 10, 2008 between australia's prime minister kevin rudd and then-president george bush in which they were discussing how to deal with the economic crisis, rudd told bush that the G20 should be involved.
bush's response?
"What's the G20?"
three months before the end of bush's second four-year term, the prime minister had to explain to bush both the the G20 and the G7.

I think it's time for Larry to go.
There was this interesting throwaway line in Politico about the administration's meeting with bank CEOs:
From the White House, there were five principal attendees: chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who arrived a few minutes late, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Council of Economic Advisers chairwoman Christina Romer, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and director of the National Economic Council Larry Summers. Uncharacteristically, Summers said almost nothing, and it appeared to one participant as if he had been told to remain silent.
Crossing my fingers that Larry's not going to be around much longer. I'd rather have him gone than Geithner.
Posted by: Mnemosyne on April 3, 2009 at 8:51 PM | PERMALINK
By the way, that same article quotes the President as telling the banksters, “My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.”
Indeed.

Seriously? the STROM THURMOND room? How can anyone take the GOP seriously at this point?
Posted by: Arachnae on April 3, 2009 at 8:56 PM | PERMALINK
On the Binghamton thing, my immediate response was: there's an immigration services center in Binghamton? Who'd have guessed? If you're going to travel across the world to move someplace, why would you chose Binghamton? I don't get it. It's a shame that 13 people had to die for me to learn that they had an immigration services center. But joking aside, my heart goes out to the friends and family of those that died. That's a tragedy that just shouldn't happen.

Crossing my fingers that Larry's not going to be around much longer. I'd rather have him gone than Geithner. -- Mnemosyne, @ 20:51
Vis sentence 1: I'll cross my fingers with yours :)
Vis sentence 2: Remember the scene, from Winnie-the-Pooh (one of my favourite books, once I got old enough to appreciate it), where Piglet asks Winnie (might not be *exact* quote, but pretty close):"would you like honey, or condensed milk with your bread?" And Winnie answers: "Both, please." And then, so as not to sound too greedy, adds: "but don't bother about the bread, please".
I want Summers gone double-pronto, but I want Geithner hung out to dry too. *Neither* should have been allowed a foot in the door in the first place...

Not only is Joe Klein talking about legalizing pot, but Reps Barney Frank, Ron Paul and eight other co-sponsors (Republican and Democrat) have a bill to legalize hemp.
Now that combination of Congressmen is something to ponder while one takes a big hit.
Posted by: Glen on April 4, 2009 at 2:00 AM | PERMALINK
Glen, you're actually talking about two different kinds of hemp. Industrial is used in making rope, cloth, paper, and many other products. It has been cultivated for those purposes for thousands of years. It contains extremely low doses of the active ingredients in pharmaceutical hemp (aka marijuana). I haven't seen the bill yet, but I would assume it's about industrial hemp and not pharmaceutical.

Please everyone, email or call republican Richard Burr of NC who is holding up Tammy Duckworth's nomination for veterans affairs. Burr is playing republican games, I don't think he ever served in the military. Military members are really angry about this.

I'm curios about some of the poster's here. What exactly is it about Summers that you don't like. Is it that he had the ability to make a lot of money and you didn't? Or is there something more specific in his performance of his duties other than just player hate. Nothing derogatory meant here at all. I'm just really curious.
Posted by: Gandalf on April 4, 2009 at 9:14 AM | PERMALINK
Michael - I'm aware of the history of hemp and pot. The hemp doesn't have much THC, that hemp was made illegal so Dupont could market nylon and how large a crop it was prior to that.
IT'S A JOKE, DUDE! YA?
Gandalf - Summers was one of the key players that stripped the Depression era regulations that protected us from the current economic crisis. He has a history of being a arogent, bigoted jack a$$ at Harvard. Plus he's just gotten 5.2 million reasons to keep things just the same on Wall St. We're very skeptical that he can or even wants to reform and re-regulate Wall St.
