GIVING OBSTRUCTIONISM A BAD NAME.... Tammy Duckworth, who lost both of her legs in combat while serving in Iraq, is the head of veterans affairs for the state of Illinois, and President Obama's nominee for assistant secretary of veterans affairs. Duckworth had a nominating hearing on Wednesday, a vote was scheduled for Thursday, and a swearing-in event for Friday.

All of that has been pushed off, however, because the top Republican on the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs wants to feel important.

Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina is delaying the nomination vote and swearing-in of injured Iraq veteran Tammy Duckworth for a top post in the Veterans Affairs administration.

His actions angered some veterans groups Friday.

"Senator Burr has had plenty of time to ask questions of her," Jon Soltz, the chairman of VoteVets.org, an organization of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, said in a statement. "Senator Burr is only hurting American veterans with this nonsense. He should stop playing petty partisan games, stop needling the White House for the sheer fun of it and grow up."

Burr still has questions about Duckworth's nomination, his office said.

What kind of questions? Burr's office wouldn't say.

This is hardly isolated. As Ryan Powers explained this morning, "Conservatives in Congress and in the media are attempting to block or delay a growing number of critical nominees for what amount to ideological witch hunts and self-interested horse-trading. As the President attempts to deal with the significant legal and logistical questions surrounding two wars, closing Guantanamo Bay, and caring for our nation's veterans, the people Obama has picked to assist him with such issues are being forced to wait in the wings."

In some cases, these are positions that hardly need Senate confirmation in the first place. In all the cases, we're talking about qualified nominees, ready to fill important posts, and who already have more than enough votes secured to win confirmation.

Burr and a few too many of his Republican colleagues are blocking and delaying good people simply because they can. It's more than a little frustrating to watch.

Indeed. As a NC citizen, it's darned embarrassing to have Burr as a Senator.

Why can't the Justice Department sue that ass hole? How about the nominee? Duckworth should be calling this guy out. Go to his office and sit outside till he asks the questions he needs answered. Nothing like a good old fashioned law suit to get things moving along. Where is Reid in all this? Why isn't he screaming bloody murder? Nauseating...

Maybe it's time for someone to ask Senator Burr the same question that got asked of many Democrats in the past 8 years: "Senator Burr, why do you hate veterans and try to undermine our troops?"

We've obviously gotten to the point where Senate Confirmation and Filibusters have gotten completely out of whack with history. Congress is in recess now, Obama should simply just appoint everyone now.

She's just too damn qualified.

Anyone who didn't see this coming hasn't been paying attention.

Ideology has nothing to do with it. This is the filibuster, folks. It is the procedural way to delay legislation. The Republicans are using these tactics to stall progressive laws from being passed. Reid know this. The problem is that he doesn't seem to have a pulse on the nation's sense of urgency. This would be a perfect case to call the Republicans out, as would Chris Hill on the ambassadorship to Iraq or assistants to the Treasury Department and DOJ. Add to that the Coleman-Franken election and the absurd bills like Bachman's currency ammendment. Reid needs to be a better spokesman for the party.

Never ceases to amaze me to see those with no military experience to be seated on either the Armed Services Committee and/or Veteran Affairs. Of course, once the draft was eliminated, the pool of any former service person dropped considerably. Burr is no different from Larry Craig who wanted to drop all non-combat service personnel from the VA. Of course, when Burr graduated there was a far more important need in the country for lawn mower salesmen than Jody troopers.

If only Senator Burr could run into a sharper shooting 12th cousin of Alexander Hamilton and swap tales.

My guess is the R's view Duckworth as a future advisory in the IL Senate or Gov race and they are laying the groundwork for their smear campaign against her.

It is amazing how short people's memories are...or it maybe that no one teaches history and literacy in school anymore. The Republicans did the same thing to Bill Clinton.

The saga continues until the Republicans understand to obstruct is to continue losing!

2010 will be the demise of the Republicans nationally simply because between now and then they will offer us no viable alternative set of policy that will take us forward out of the economic mess their party exacerbated over 8 long years. While they work to protect the top .2%, they seemingly haven't noticed sovereignty rests with common voters.

Hope trumps obstructionism at this juncture in our history! -Kevo

No problems. Quid pro quo. That's what the repugs would do. Wait for the next bit of pork that Burr wants and deep six it, and tell him why. He want to play hardball, make an example of him to discourage the others. Start with a media campaign and veteran's hall tour explaining how Burr hates veterans.

Short memories is what you whiners suffer from and blaming delays in appointments on Republicans is a convenient excuse.

Nominees to sucabinet positions in Bush's first term waited on average almost nine months for appointments to be approved.

Koh is just a stark raving moonbat who deserves no place of responsibility in the government where he can influence policy. He should ctay on campus where he can merely poison and indoctrinate young minds into the progressive agenda.

Let's get some military veterans organized and deployed to Burr's North Carolina senate office so he can learn first hand what they think of his playing politics with their lives.

Posted by: Winkandanod on April 4, 2009 at 12:39 PM | PERMALINK

This is exactly what they did to Clinton. They blocked his judicial appointments and then accused him of failing to appoint judges.

Posted by: J Bean on April 4, 2009 at 1:05 PM | PERMALINK

How about Obama doing some 'recess' appointments. Something the Republican cabal didn't mind at all.

That would certainly clear up the backlog.

Let them deal with the aftermath later.

Why hold up Duckworth's nomination?

First, she's a woman.

Second, she's a minority.

Third, she's disabled.

Isn't it OBVIOUS that she's an unqualified affirmative action appointment?

"Tammy Duckworth, who lost both of her legs in combat while serving in Iraq, is the head of veterans affairs for the state of Illinois,.."

Maybe Burr is concerned that she'll be TOO empathetic to needs of our veterans?

I have contacted Burr's office and I ask everyone to do the same, this man has never served in the military, I would like to know why he is on the selection panel, perhaps we should call for him to be replaced.

Republicans

Why do the hate those that serve our country?

Why do they hate America?

Posted by: Glen on April 4, 2009 at 5:31 PM | PERMALINK

we really do not have a functioning government anymore, really can't when one of two parties comprising the government refuses to adhere to the will of the people and let the majority rule as was envisioned by the constitution, by over 230 years of precedent and by the majority of the people that chose to not let republicans have power because they screwed everything up so badly when they did.

republican obstruction for obstruction's sake at minimum is unpatriotic, but in reality is much worse.

Posted by: pluege on April 4, 2009 at 5:44 PM | PERMALINK

More and more the senate seems to be the cause of many of America's problems rather than providing solutions. It is always republicans playing kid games. They aren't fit to govern with adults.
