QUOTE OF THE DAY.... Responding to Dick Cheney's assertions that Obama administration national security policies have left the nation less safe, David Axelrod told CNN this morning that he has a different perspective.

"I find it supremely ironic, on a day when we were meeting with NATO, to talk about the continued threat from al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they're still plotting against us eight years -- or seven years later," he said. "I think the question for Mr. Cheney is, how could that be? How could this have gone so long? Why are they still in business?"

Satyam Khanna has the video.

I have to assume the White House welcomes these kinds of opportunities. The more Cheney takes cheap shots, the more Obama and his team get to respond. The result reinforces the notion that the political fight boils down to Obama's approach vs. the Bush/Cheney approach.

It's also why Republican leaders would prefer to have Cheney stop talking so much.

Bush/Cheney spent eight years failing to fully contain Al Quaeda; they spent seven years failing to defeat them and bring ObL to justice, as they promised they would do---one of them a dry-drunk, service-dodging incompetent, and the other a law-breaking, service-dodging incompetent---both enabled and defended for the eight year reign of their domestic tyranny by the same Republicans who now seek to distance themselves, not because it's the right thing to do; not because of some belated sense to seek atonement for their collective actions, but for political means only.

Seeking to politically distance one's self from Bush/Cheney after spending so long embracing and defending them is no less than to say, "nicht Nazi."

And no---"Godwin's Law" no longer applies. It has never been codified; it has never been voted into legitimacy; it is nothing but a farce, and has lost all meaning. I, for one, shall not embrace it....

Dick Cheney is one very sick man. Unfortunately, his pathologies infected a whole nation. I think he really would welcome another attack as long as it didn't kill his immediate family, because it would prove him right. But just because he is sick doesn't mean he is not also evil.

At a time when we are finding out about the extent of the complicity of the Bush/Cheney regime's top figures in torture and all the rest, the need for a full investigation into their evil deeds is more necessary than ever. AG Eric Holder has laid the groundwork by dismissing the charges against Ted Stevens. He can now start investigating the rot inside the Bush/Cheney regime.

And the financial system. I'll gladly pay higher taxes for a well-staffed, vigorous DOJ.

I think S. Waybright sums it up pretty well in his/her first paragraph.

I've been WAITING for both this administration and newsies to point out the obvious - that if Bush/Cheney had taken care of this matter in 2001-2002, we wouldn't have it today.

I do wish Obama would say something of the sort.

Cheney doesn't even bother to mask his contempt for our democracy. When he was in charge, it bordered on treason to question his regime. Now that he's on the outs, he using the broad, attack rhetoric of a political campaign. If had a specific disagreement, that would be one thing. Instead, he's playing attack dog politics. It's very unbecoming for a former VP, but there's no real surprise there. Can we get him to The Hague before he dies of old age?

Cheney is a war criminal and should be prosecuted. I think he wants to see the US attacked again so he can say, "See...told ya so."

The howler in the interview is when Axelrod says that by contrast, W. has been statesman-like in his conduct. I never thought that I would hear the word "statesman" applied to Bush, especially by a Democrat. Who knew that W. could accomplish so much just by keeping his yap shut.

Posted by: AK Liberal on April 5, 2009 at 1:27 PM | PERMALINK

If Bush had kept his mouth shut for the entirety of his presidency, he would easily seem twice the statesman he is percieved to be now.

Posted by: Winknandanod on April 5, 2009 at 3:57 PM | PERMALINK

There are a great number of Americans of all stripes who wish the Dick Cheney would stop talking permanently. A simple ball gag would do.

Bush a statesman? Now that's a stretch.

An utter and epic failure by the Bush administration. We've spent more time trying to track down a bunch of thugs that live in caves then it took us to win WWII.

The facts:
- Bush was repeatedly warned about the threat while taking office and did nothing.
- After 911, they spent more money invading Iraq/Afghanistan than Korea or Vietnam (and I seem to remember reading that it cost MORE than WWII, but that must not be allowing for inflation.)
- Afghanistan is a failed country with the Taliban on the rise.
- Iraq is MAYBE stable, but pretty much a vassal state of Iran which upsets the balance of power in the Gulf so the long term results remain unknown.
- Where is Osama Bin Laden? Not brought to justice, not captured, not killed. Free to rebuild, rearm and attack AGAIN.

America less safe BECAUSE of Obama? Don't make me laugh. Bush and Cheney presided over the most disastrous foreign policy failure EVER, and we will be paying the price for it for a long, long time.

Months after The One's inauguration, you people can't stop talking about Dick Cheney.

Now why would that be?

Maybe because he kept us safe for eight years and you're worried that your guy won't do the same?

It would be worth another attack just to see the looks of stunned incomprehension on your faces.

It's not like they're going to attack Orange County or Arizona, so I'm not worried. New Yorkers, Chicagoans, San Franciscoans and of course Washingtonians, I'd start looking for a place to hide now if I were you.

But nobodies going to hide or run away, and that's the bottom line isn't it? Everybody in a major city has got more balls than this guy ever will. One more f&*king wingnut chicken$hit.

Posted by: BaaaauuuK! Here, chicky! on April 5, 2009 at 7:16 PM | PERMALINK

Amen, BaaaauuuK. And it's also worth pointing out that the citizens of Myke's hit-list voted overwhelmingly first for Kerry then for Obama. As a Manhattanite myself, the last thing we wanted after 9/11 was any more Republican "protection".

And, really, does it get any more morally reprehensible than this: "It would be worth another attack just to see the looks of stunned incomprehension on your faces."

Thousands dead so this dickhead can say "nyah-nyah-nyah"...

That is just the mentality one would expect from a repig. You'd like to see other people die, encourage carnage, blood, death, and mass murder to satisfy your pugnacious, self-righteous, immature, contemptuous, small-minded ego. My 13 year old just asked me what kind of 'unfeeling monster' could write something like the above. You could, right mykey-boy? Yes, you do your party proud Myke K. Won't you just love to boast to your children (assuming they aren't murdered as part of the mass killing that you are calling for)? Won't you just love justifying your lust for 'vindication' to your loving/forgiving God of Mercy if your hopes and desires come true? Keep on writing Myke. Your horrible example is helping to form opinions of the Republican party for generations to come. Nice work! (And mykey/monkey-boy, Don't forget your battle cry of the last 8 years - "United We Stand!" But that was only while your side was in power, right? You hypocritical scumbag. Why do you hate America?)

Posted by: In what respect, Charlie? on April 5, 2009 at 8:18 PM | PERMALINK

Here are some thoughts I pulled together, not entirely my own, but well stated... While the Repigs were supposedly “keeping us safe” they waged an illegal war for profit, imprisoned and tortured innocent people, caged people in 'free-speech' zones, and terrorized and spied on millions of patriotic, American citizens....bu$h and dick kept Americans safe?!! As an analogy, Why go out to dinner when you can have room service? Bush and dickless Cheney served up 160,000 warm American bodies to them. "They" didn’t need to come here, cheney and bu$h delivered Americans to their door. Al Qaeda took full advantage of it and took twice as many American lives as they took on 9/11. What did we get for it all, besides enormous profits for Haliburton, Black Water, and the oil companies? Answer that question and you have the extent of Dick Cheney’s "statesmanship." And let’s not forget the outing of Valerie Plame, an agent working on stopping illegal WMD proliferation. THAT really kept us safe. Nice work repigs. al-Qa’ida will be back. Why? Hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis, GITMO, Abu Ghraib, heavily-biased U.S. support for Israel, general expansion of US military presence in the ME, and a host of other strategic errors that have insured al-Qa’ida’s resilience, staying power and motivation. That's why. All brought to you by bu$h/dickless/dumbsfeld/RALPH-owitz and those who supported them (I'm talking to you Mykey-boy). Safer because of bu$h/and Rick-head?! C'mon, get a grip on reality.

Responding to Dick Cheney's assertions that Obama administration national security policies have left the nation less safe,

Unlike the Cheney regime, which did such a bang-up job of protecting New York and Washington from attack.....
