PAYCHECKS.... We heard plenty of criticisms related to President Obama's experience before he was elected, but MSNBC's Joe Scarborough seems to have tweaked the argument a bit.

This morning on MSNBC, Joe Scarborough ranted about President Obama's economic plans (even though 56 percent of Americans approve). His latest talking point: that Obama "has never received a paycheck" in his entire life:

"Think about this: We have a president who has never received a paycheck. ... This guy -- think about it -- he's running Detroit, he's running Wall Street, he's gonna run other sectors of our economy. Andrew, he's never received a check from a profit-making business in his entire life. Not one check. ... Think about the radicalism of that!"

OK, let's take Scarborough's advice and "think about" this. First, the president isn't "running Detroit." Second, the president isn't "running Wall Street." Third, the president isn't "gonna run other sectors of our economy" (Scarborough wasn't specific -- he's a little too superficial for facts).

But more importantly, Scarborough's repeated claims that Obama has never earned a paycheck from a profit-making business are simply false. Ol' Joe launched into his little on-air tantrum without taking a minute to Google the president's professional background. He misled his audience (again), and I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that he won't issue an on-air correction.

Remember, the right is convinced that MSNBC is in the tank for the White House, and yet it gives three uninterrupted hours to Scarborough every weekday to spread nonsense like this.

Would he prefer someone who failed at running a business, say in oil or baseball?

or be a Florida Congressman?

the nausea-inducing stupidity is ceaseless on cable news. it is truly beneath contempt. and joe scarborough is to be pitied for his ignorance, fear, and childishness...

...were i his mother.

as it is, i think he is a blustering asshole who should get his ass kicked -- out of the public discourse.

Joe Scarborough, today's WORST PERSON IN THE WORLLLLLLLLLLLLLLD!

Oh, wait a minute...Olbermann works for NBC too. Olbermann didn't report on the the Santeli/Cramer misdeeds.

Nevermind

Are you serious? Those are all considered jobs with a track record? you guys are pretty thin skinned. Obama has no record to talk of, probably would not be able to pass a govt. security check

Posted by: janet on April 7, 2009 at 3:12 PM | PERMALINK

Andrew, he's never received a check from a profit-making business in his entire life.

Have Bush or Cheney ever gotten a paycheck from a profit-making business that didn't make its profit from government contracts?

Riiiight. Because people who have public sector/nonprofit jobs *never* pass govt security checks.

I agree on one thing -- he doesn't have a lot of business experience. Good thing he's working with people who do.

Joe "Dead Intern" Scarborough. Always. Every time you type his name.

Posted by: Davis X. Machina on April 7, 2009 at 3:18 PM | PERMALINK

janet is going to disclose her income statements and show us how she wrote books and made millions. She's also going to show us her mettle in organizing people and share how she's a local celebrity, waiting for a conservative sign from God to run as the next Sarah Palin.

In regards to Scarborough; he's the gift that keeps on giving. (Don't tell Republicans, it's a 'secret code word)
The conservative pundits supply us with all the fodder we need to show how silly they actually are. Just keep that in mind, next time someone like Janet shows up sharing her wisdom with you. It's embarrassing to them, but hey, someone has got to educate them at some point.

Posted by: bruno on April 7, 2009 at 3:18 PM | PERMALINK

Scarborough clearly just made a slip of the tongue. He meant to say that BHO never EARNED a paycheck.

Posted by: Al on April 7, 2009 at 3:19 PM | PERMALINK

Janet, Scarborough did'nt say that the President had only recieved a few paychecks as a summer intern. He made the hyperbolic claim that he had never recieved a paycheck.

What does that mean anyway? Are you bothered that Dubya never had a job that his daddy did'nt fix for him?

Posted by: Winknandanod on April 7, 2009 at 3:20 PM | PERMALINK

You mean joe the congressman who quit as soon as Lori Klausutis was found dead uin his congressional office in FL. Around the time Chandra Levi went missing. Joe the congressman has the same intelligence as his campaign name sake.

Posted by: SGeroge on April 7, 2009 at 3:23 PM | PERMALINK

@Winkandanod: Where are Olbermann & Maddow on Brother Joe? This is where the corporate media falls down. They will go after Fox and the other corp media, but not their own. When they turn their formidable weapons upon thier own bosses, I will have more respect for them. O'Hannity and Reilly are easy targets, as is Fox, but what about NBC? And, CNBC?

I love how people who work for non-profits don't have 'real' jobs. I guess that means that I haven't been working for the past 9 years. Of course, it couldn't be that people work for non-profits because they are geuinely passionate about their work.

Posted by: VT Idealist on April 7, 2009 at 3:26 PM | PERMALINK

Thank GOD Obama didn't work for a "profit-making" business for very long. The idea of making "profit" off someone else's work (i.e. laborers) is repugnant.

I did work in a profit-making business and doing the job well was not valued nearly as much as sucking every dollar out of the customers.

Service jobs are better for the soul.

That's one of the biggest problems America has -- glorification of "profit."

Sorry, but that's just stupid. (And thin-skinned, to boot).

You probably have no idea what a secruity check entails---nothing in that record would preclude it (Certainly, it's better than MY record, and I've received a clearance).

Second, selling yourself and your products (i.e., a writer) is the ULTIMATE in capitalism--it's the free market in its purest form, with almost perfect information and very low barriers to entry.

Who cares what MSNBC does? They're only a local NYC station anyway.

And John McCain worked for what profit making business?

Posted by: Tigershark on April 7, 2009 at 3:34 PM | PERMALINK

Did McCain ever work in the private sector? It seems he went from the Naval Academy to Viet Nam/POW to congressional aide to elected office. He worked for his rich beer baron FATHER IN LAW for about a year in between retiring from the Navy on April Fool's Day, 1981 and attaining a congressional seat in November 1982. (Wikipedia)

Palin was briefly a sportscaster after earning her journalism degree; hard to say if she worked her way through school. She was in a beauty pageant or two. Per Wiki, she helped with Todd's family's commercial fishing business too. (Capacity not stated.)

Between the two of them, the GOP ticket seems to have less private sector work experience than your average 25 year old American.

They worked in paid government positions. Applaud McCain for his military and public service, but still...

Glass house, anyone?

And John McCain worked for what profit making business?

Glad you asked! A brief job at Cindy's daddy's beer distribution business was John McCain's only foray into the for-profit sector, I believe. He married the boss's daughter and started living on her money as soon as e'er he could.

Posted by: shortstop on April 7, 2009 at 3:38 PM | PERMALINK

Hmm Wasn't Obama a professor at the University of Chicago? I'm pretty sure they pay people in their Law School. The stupidity of these folks is seriously caustic.

I guess I'm kinda lost here, I don't have cable so I do not watch business news and I have no idea who Joe S. is. So perhaps, CNBC is not as relivant as they would like you to believe.

Never-the-less, one should keep an eye on the kooks of the world, otherwise they may be elected to public office.

Well, aside from being a dumbass television pundit, he's also a former Republican Congressman from Florida's 1st.

And now you know your warning came too late.

When will the detractors learn that we Americans have watched his opponents throw shit in his direction to get the upper hand. At all times we Americans have seen the bullshit for what it was. We kindly await for personalities like Morning Joe to pick their game up and begin meeting President Obama substantively.

If any detractor such as Joe, Rush, Eric, or even the clown Glenn wants us to begin listening to them, they had better quit the shit throwing (after all any simian can throw its own feces) and begin telling us why they have a better set of policy or plans than the current leader of our free world! -Kevo

I kind of knew there was some hint of scandal in Scarborough's past but I had no idea it was something this appalling. Thanks for the link. It'll be there whenever I type his name.

Posted by: Stefan on April 7, 2009 at 4:28 PM | PERMALINK

Why is Joe still on MSNBC without some comments from those independents, Keith & Rachel? I know it is risky to soil your own bed, but they make enough to take the risk and not fear for food, clothing and shelter for a few years. Some of us do not have that luxury.

peace,

Is it just me, or has Morning Joe changed his slant since the election? He never used to be so obviously in the tank for GOP Talking Points, never used to be so combative with Mika.

Methinks the corporate focus groups are rolling out a new meme. Shades of The Bickersons. Sort of like that show he loves to make fun of- The View.

And is Ed Schultz supposed to be MSNBC's answer to Glen Beck?

Posted by: DAY on April 7, 2009 at 4:58 PM | PERMALINK

Scarborough clearly just made a slip of the tongue. He meant to say that BHO never EARNED a paycheck.

I truly LOVE this right-wing talking point-- because when I think of Obama I think of a priviledged, lazy person who has never had a hard day of work in his life.

Oh, wait, that's what I thought of Bush when he was selected in 2000.

Seriously, it's one thing to try and convince people that Obama is bad/evil/dangerous but it's a total waste of time to try and pretend that he is lazy and didn't get where he is because of hard work. People just aren't going to buy it, it just makes you appear stupid and bitter.

Next you're going to try and convince everyone that he's stupid too, that he only became the editor of the Harvard Law Review because of affirmative action.

Didn't Obama work at like a Baskin-Robbins in high school? That's got to count for something...

Posted by: seriously on April 7, 2009 at 6:35 PM | PERMALINK

Nice links!

Obama had a bunch of summer intern positions- then Bobby Rush set him up with a State Senate job.

Posted by: Starchunks Barrista on April 7, 2009 at 10:55 PM | PERMALINK

Bush got some paychecks I believe, but he also ran every company he ever had right into the ground just like he did with our country!

Too bad Papa Bush could write a check to fix this last little boo boo his son made.
