FRIDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Five American troops were killed this morning in Mosul as a result of a "massive" suicide truck bombing. It was the deadliest day for U.S. forces in over a year.

* Negotiations with the Somali pirates continue, as Richard Phillips' effort at an escape proved unsuccessful.

* Limbaugh tries to connect the pirates with ACORN. What a weirdo.

* President Obama sees "glimmers of hope" in the economy, but reiterated his belief that we have a long way to go.

* Robert Mugabe's cronies are seeking amnesty deals by abducting and torturing opposition leaders.

* The Obama administration's efforts in invoking the state secrets claim continues to be an ongoing source of deep disappointment.

* Corporate lobbyists are helping orchestrate right-wing "Tea Parties"? Imagine that.

* Marc Morano will be a full-time, professional global warming denier. Nice work if you can get it.

* The way David Schultz, an NPR-affiliate reporter, was treated at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center forum was not acceptable.

* Is Maine Gov. John Baldacci (D) open to marriage equality? Maybe. (thanks to reader A.F. for the tip)

* On a related note, someone really ought to get the opponents of marriage equality some urban dictionaries.

* Why anyone would find Charles Krauthammer even remotely credible is a mystery to me.

* Broder Today, Broder Yesterday.

* There aren't that many gay Republicans. The chances of sustaining two rival political organizations for the same constituency seem remote.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Robert Mugabe's cronies are seeking amnesty deals by abducting and torturing opposition leaders.

I have to say, I'm a little surprised Dick Cheney never thought of that.

But "kidnapping" and "torture"? I find it appalling that the NYTimes is using such a word for what, after all, are interrogation techniques that reasonable people can disagree on. Doesn't it mean to say that Robert Mugabe's cronies are seeking amnesty deals by extraordinary renditions and aggressive interrogations of opposition leaders....?

"Corporate lobbyists are helping orchestrate right-wing "Tea Parties"? "

Lipton Tea must be behind it somewhere.

Limbaugh tries to connect the pirates with ACORN. What a weirdo.

Yet, Rick Moran, the conservative from the earlier post, who criticized Glen Beck says this:

Liberals have temporarily abandoned the idea of trying to make Rush Limbaugh the leader of the conservatives and the GOP because Mr. Limbaugh has failed to cooperate by not being very radical lately or at least, loony tunes radical which is the standard by which the left wants to establish in people’s minds when they look at the right.

Maybe he spoke too soon, or maybe he has a pretty low bar when it comes to conservatives.

"some urban dictionaries"? LOL. Sullivan had it right. Just go to urbandictionary.com. I'm not aware of a plural.

The Obama administration's efforts in invoking the state secrets claim continues to be an ongoing source of deep disappointment

I believe one of the reasons Obama is trying to keep these memos out of the public eye is because they will show that Democratic leaders in congress (including either himself or his new Secretary of Srate) knew a lot more about Bush's torture regime than they have thus far admitted in public.

On the last point, I think you wanted to say

"There aren't that many _openly_ gay Republicans." There certainly are plenty of closet cases.

So the cause of gay people will be helped if Republican gays become even more conservative? Like that will make the rest of the party hate them less? Seriously?

Missouri's Republican controlled house passed a first round amendment that would allow students to carry concealed weapons on public universities.

I own and enjoy several guns, but this has got to be the most bat shit crazy idea I've heard in a while. Proponents 'believe' it would deter college campus shootings. However, in most cases the shooter ends the shooting by capping himself, so clearly the 'threat' of being shot back at doesn't apply here.

We just elected a Dem for gov., but the house vote passed 106-41 so if the senate passes the amendment, it might be veto proof.

I think we should be looking at the bright side; these bombers are killing fewer and fewer people with their strikes.

*sigh*

PaminBB is on it, and many of them held high places in the last administration.

How about a separate thread or link for Limbaugh/Hannity/Beck/Rove/Malkin/Coulter/Will stuff? If I wanted to know what insanity they were promoting, I'd go read it for myself.

Bachman, Inohofe, Sanford, etc are elected officials, so their looney-tudes matter. Pundits? Don't.

I already emailed Steve this, but considering the amount of email he gets, I didn't want to take the chance that it would be missed.

There's already a response spoof ad about the "storm gathering" anti-gay marriage ad. It's a lot of fun.

"There aren't that many gay Republicans"

Want to bet?

By default, I assume that any Republican I meet is a closeted, self-hating gay.

Posted by: Joe on April 10, 2009 at 7:57 PM | PERMALINK

Not many gay republicans?

I agree with Joe, the are self-loathing, closeted, hypocrites.

Look at Ted Haggard.

Not many gay republicans? Do self-loathing medicated closet cases like limbaugh count?

Posted by: bikelib on April 10, 2009 at 8:51 PM | PERMALINK
There aren't that many gay Republicans.

A lot of men have found that being a loud and proud registered member of the G.O.P. is an excellent way to stay in the closet.

Why anyone would find Charles Krauthammer even remotely credible is a mystery to me.

Roger Ebert gave him a thumbs-up... compared to Bill O'Reilly.

Michael W, @19:54,

Everyone's making fun of them... Not that it's difficult; in addition to using the term "rainbow coalition" in the ad, they also, inadvertently "borrowed" another term from the gay community: 2m4m. I didn't know what it meant (indeed, thought that 4m was a clever way of writing "forum") but, once I fund out, it was a hoot. As was the website referenced in the post script:

Regarding the Teabaggers and their April 15t parties... Can someone, please, kindly enlighten this late-middle-aged foreigner?

Is a Teabagger the sucker, or the suckee? Also, do they expect women to attend those orgies, or are the "rallies" likely to be more along the lines of Ron Paul campaign events?

Posted by: exlibra on April 11, 2009 at 12:08 AM | PERMALINK

"On a related note, someone really ought to get the opponents of marriage equality some urban dictionaries."

The Teaparty/teabagger talk has been amusing enough; 2m4m seems too obscure and truncated to produce much humor.

But here's the thing. I have been hearing about tossing salads for awhile now. I gather there's a sexual angle. I don't care; tossed salads are greens, vegetables, complementary foods and dressings.

As a liberal, if I see conservatives form a website called "tossingsalad.com" I will assume they're playing with the idea of "mixing it up" politically. We'll all have our fun with it, but does being out of this loop really say anything bad about someone? Who cares if they don't get the reference? I don't get the reference.

Do I really want to be known as part of, or conversant in the jargon of, a subculture that needs a number of euphemisms for sex acts? Certainly not in the context of politics.

Can someone, please, kindly enlighten this late-middle-aged foreigner?

Try this definition from urbandictionary. Short answer - either. But it apparently has other definitons as well:

1) a person who is unaware that they have said or done something foolish, childlike, noobish, lame, or inconvenient.

2) Any guy who drives a Ford Explorer "Sport" (the two door model)

I would guess there are plenty of repug manipulators who are perfectly aware of and enjoy the creation of their reality with the teabag business. It is incredibly naive to think that the folks who try to sell Joe the fake plumber, are not just toying with their constituents, but are well aware of their own cynical game. When you do not have the best interest of the society at heart, but rather a self centered objective of garnering and using power for its own sake, a bad joke such as referencing ball sucking is perfectly amusing. If they can organize around an incoherent message, you certainly would not want them to have any issues that would actually ring true with the masses who buy truck nuts.

It's because he is intellectually honest. He is always wrong about his conclusions, and he is wrong about his facts 3/4 of the time, but I get the feeling he actually believes what he is saying.

This compares with Coulter, Limbaugh, Rove, Kristol, and many more, whom you can never believe, because you know they say what is in their immediate self-interest for you to believe. If they ever tell the truth it is because it happens to be good for them, but the truth value is irrelevant.

Krauthammer is just clueless.

I keep waiting to see these teabagging parties reported on TV. All I every see are a couple of ranting right wing loonies.

Maybe the teabaggers are getting arrested for public indecency before they get on TV.
