FRIDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* In New York's 20th, Democrat Scott Murphy now leads Republican Jim Tedisco by 264 votes. In the face of increasingly likely defeat, Republicans are now eyeing the courts, and Tedisco's lawyers yesterday asked a state court to declare him the winner, despite having fewer votes.

* Former Sen. Norm Coleman (R) said he feels compelled to keep fighting his defeat in the courts. "I'm hopeful," Coleman said. "I think the law is on our side."

* Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) spoke at an anti-abortion dinner last night in Indiana.

* Sen. Chris Dodd's (D-Conn.) in-state fundraising in the first quarter was abysmal, but President Obama made it clear this week that he intends to help the Connecticut Democrat.

* Speaking of senators with fundraising problems, Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.) raised a grand total of $845 in the first quarter. No, that's not a typo, and there are no zeroes missing from the figure.

* Will we see a rematch next year between Elwyn Tinklenberg and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.)? It seems likely, and some Democratic leaders are confident that Bachmann is vulnerable.

Re Tedisco and Coleman: They do have Bush v. Gore on their side, where a majority of the US Supreme court supported the principle that 'if there's an election and a Republican is running against a Democrat, then the Republican shall be presumed to have won.'
(/snark & disgust)

For being against "activist judges" Republicans sure do seem to like using the courts to resolve elections...

Posted by: kp on April 17, 2009 at 12:01 PM | PERMALINK

now kp, how can the Republicans be expected to support the majority when the majority doesn't support them? :)

and can't we find someone with a slightly more electable name to run against Bachmann?

Why are you still talking about Sarah Palin? Why don't you guys ever talk about embarrassments to your own party, like Chris Dodd and Roland Burris?

Posted by: dead weight mike on April 17, 2009 at 12:05 PM | PERMALINK

I admit it, the $845 Burris raised came from me. In my defense, I'm a stone carver specializing in tomb inscriptions.

here's the correct link to this part of steve's first item...

Tedisco's lawyers yesterday asked a state court to declare him the winner, despite having fewer votes.

We keep talking about Sarah Palin because she keeps talking. If she'd go away, we'd move on to some of your party's other embarrassments (don't ask me to list them pal, we ain't got that much space) but she keeps inserting herself into our faces, so we respond. And laugh heartily.

"Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) spoke at an anti-abortion dinner last night in Indiana."

Perfect, Steve. "Pro-life" = bullshit

The link about the Murphy-Tedisco race goes to another unrelated story.

Thanks Shortstop; you made me laugh out loud

What's especially funny about this comment is that it's made in response to a post that mentions..Chris Dodd and Roland Burris.

* Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) spoke at an anti-abortion dinner last night in Indiana.

Hello? Alaska? It's time to learn a new word: RECALL. Here's another one for you: IMPEACHMENT. Not "Rugged-Individualist" enough for you? fine; here's another idea: TORCHES, PITCHFORKS, AND HEAVILY-ARMED WILDLIFE.

Coleman knows he's done, hence his playing to the peanut gallery now by claiming the law is on his side. Funny, but the last court sure didn't think so, with prejudice as well as unanimously. But Coleman has his wingnut welfare to qualify for still, so he can't just up and quit yet.

Of all of the wacko, dangerous members of the House of Representatives, Michelle Bachman seems to be the most deranged. I hope the DCCC works hard recruiting and supporting the next Democratic candidate, and that it is someone more exciting than Tinklenberg.

I hope Michele Bachmann keeps her seat. She's hilarious, but more to the point, she is the example that Democrats can repeatedly point to in elections. She will say many more outrageously stupid things before she is done, and each one is like a little box with fancy gift wrap.

So, Tedisco has lost the first round in the vote tally. I'm surer there will be an automatic recount triggered due to the margin of Murphy's win. Tedisco doesn't seem to want to wait for the inevitable recount, and is asking to be certified the winner in spite of the fact that his opponent has more votes.

I don't know what drugs that man is on, but someone needs to cut the dosage.

Why are you still talking about Sarah Palin? Why don't you guys ever talk about embarrassments to your own party, like Chris Dodd and Roland Burris?

Actually we do talk about our not-so-great politicians. All three people were mentioned in Steve's post, let's review what Steve said and then let's discuss what's implied in his post:

Steve B: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) spoke at an anti-abortion dinner last night in Indiana.

**Implied** Palin is schmoozing and pandering for conservative votes on a national platform (speaking at a function at least 3000 miles from any Alaskan border).

Steve B: Sen. Chris Dodd's (D-Conn.) in-state fundraising in the first quarter was abysmal, but President Obama made it clear this week that he intends to help the Connecticut Democrat.

**Implied** Dodd, can't raise money, can't connect to his constituency - possible loss of seat

Steve B: Speaking of senators with fundraising problems, Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.) raised a grand total of $845 in the first quarter. No, that's not a typo, and there are no zeroes missing from the figure.

**Implied** Burris can't raise money, can't connect to his constituency - possible loss of seat

Summary: Our embarassments are probably going to go away soon; however, your embarassment has a very good chance of capturing the GOP nomination for President in 2012. I guess Democrats are much more critical of their elected officials and will pull the carpet from under them when put to a vote. (see Joe Lieberman) The Right will fall on swords to save the political careers of the most smarmy of politicians. (see Bush presidency)

What more needs to be said??

Coleman said, "I think the law is on our side." That would be the law of diminishing returns.

What more needs to be said??

What more indeed?

If I were Sarah Palin, I'd stay out of Alaska, too. Apparently she seems to think that the legislature shouldn't be doing its job, possibly because when they do, they turn down her appointees. The Unhinging Continues about how she's trying to appoint a Republican (three so far) to a Democratic seat in the legislature and has been losing and WAR is Over! and Palin Reacts to Ross Smackdown. about the legislature's refusal to appoint the craptacular Wayne Anthony Ross as Attorney General.

Yeah, Sarah Palin is the Democrats secret weapon.

Nice!

No mention of Palin saying at that dinner that she considered aborting Trig?

Posted by: TG Chicago on April 17, 2009 at 3:05 PM | PERMALINK

There's a movement to get Bachmann's opponent to change his last name to Teaklenbag. This ought to drain some support from Bachmann.

What more needs to be said?? -Mick

How about that Burris has no shot of being the next candidate? My money's on that race coming down to Alexi Giannoulias and Mark Kirk.

I think I'll just call him Senator G.

My money's on that race coming down to Alexi Giannoulias and Mark Kirk.

That's what I've thought all along, but now I'm hearing that Kirk would rather be governor than senator. Have no idea whether to give credence to this. Either way, he will be a GOP candidate.

gbear:

That made me laugh. Well done.
