THE PERFECT SPOKESPERSON.... Last week, New York Gov. David Paterson (D) unveiled a proposal to permit gay marriages in the Empire State. Take a wild guess who's positioning himself as the leading opponent of marriage equality in New York.
Rudy Giuliani is declaring war on gay marriage -- vowing to use his strong opposition of it against the Democrats if he runs for governor next year.
The former mayor, in an extended interview with The Post, also predicted that Gov. Paterson's high-profile effort to legalize gay marriage would anger many New Yorkers and spark a revolt that could help sweep Republicans into office in 2010.
"This will create a grass-roots movement. This is the kind of issue that, in many ways, is somewhat beyond politics," said Giuliani, a two-term mayor who unsuccessfully sought the GOP presidential nomination last year.
I'm generally loath to drag a politician's personal life into a debate over policy, but under the circumstances, Giuliani's colorful familial background makes him a uniquely hilarious figure to lead the charge against gay marriage. Indeed, the former mayor would be wise to re-think this strategy.
For those who've forgotten, Rudy Giuliani has been married three times. The first was to his cousin. He left his second wife, Donna Hanover, by announcing it in a press release -- before telling his spouse. After Hanover kicked him out their home for alleged serial adultery, Giuliani marched in a St. Patrick's Day parade with his mistress.
There is arguably no prominent American worse suited to "declare war" on gay marriage than Rudy Giuliani. He has single handedly done more to undermine the institution of traditional marriage than any gay couple possibly could.
If proponents of marriage equality are really lucky, Giuliani will be the face of the opposition.

The people who oppose marriage equality view marriage through a totally different lens that normal people do. They truly don't see a problem with Rudy having been married three times and being a poster boy for infidelity and poor parenting. In their minds, his flagrant abuse of traditional marriage is not even relevant. Sure, he fails spectacularly at one man-one woman, but he's failing at what God intended, so he's as good a spokesperson as anyone who's been married once, faithfully, to one woman.
They're choosing him for his demonstrated ability to hate, not for his record.

Don't forget the hypocrisy at play here, too-- Rudy now declares himself to be anti-gay, but when his second wife kicked him out, where did he go? Ohhhhhhh yeah, he went to stay with two friends who happened to be . . . wait for it . . . A GAY COUPLE!!!!! Ohh, the horror!!!!!
Not only that, but Rudy also appeared in drag on more occasions than Bugs Bunny. The hypocrisy is as transparent as glass!

How many laws against gay marriages does Rudy think we need. Maybe as many as say 9, 11, laws?

Funny, I was just back in my hometown over the weekend, and it happens to be the hometown of Rudy's current wife. This is just small-town gossip, but supposedly he's looking into getting another divorce.
Too bad marriage doesn't have a "three strikes" rule.

Idunno, Newt might be even worse. And now that he's been reborn as a catholic, this would be just up his alley.

Ghouliani; just when you thought it was safe to be gay in New York. I'll go double or nothing on Florida plase!

"I'm generally loath to drag a politician's personal life into a debate over policy..."
Steve, why do I get the feeling that you chose that particular word deliberately when writing a piece about Guiliani?

"This is the kind of issue that, in many ways, is somewhat beyond politics," says the putative candidate as he promotes an issue to bolster his candidacy. In any event, I douht that this is an issue that would help il Duce much in NY for two reasons: first, most New Yorkers so angered bygay marriage are probably already solid Rethug voters and, second, any appeal on this issue to non-Rethugs would likely be cancelled out by Rudy's obvious hypocrisy, insincerity, and opportunism. Plus, as was evident in NY, and proved again and again in Iowa, NH, and Florida, the more you see of Giuliani, the less you like him.

I suppose Rudy is going to tell us that the gays attacked us on 9/11.

You forgot the bit about Rudy crossdressing. What could more hysterical than a person guilty of adultery 3 times who likes to wear womens clothes rallying against gay marriage.

Not too often that one sees "wise" and "Giuliani" in the same sentence....

Didn't Rudy bunk with a gay couple when Donna kicked him out of Gracie Mansion? How do his friends feel about this? I'd love to hear.

Attention is attention, regardless of the cause being supported. Rudy is tired of being out of the limelight.

A new poll out of the Siena College Research Institute says that New Yorkers favor gay marriage 53-39% (H/T to JO for the info and link: http://www.buffalonews.com/home/story/645388.html).
What would be really interesting, given Gov. Paterson's basement-level approval ratings (27%) and high unfavorables (63%), is if he can use gay marriage as a way to rebuild his approval rating. Wouldn't that be a momentous sign of cultural shift?!?

Check out this article from the NY Post. Yes, Rudy stayed at the home of his gay friends in 2001. And those friends are getting married in Connecticut. They say he takes his position against gay marriage on religious and political grounds, but not on personal beliefs. Although they cite Rudy's Catholic traditions, keep in mind, of course, his three marriages and his support of abortion rights. So you make the call. IMO, he just wants a way to become politically relevant again.

It's really very simple, Rudy is afraid the Gays will use up all the marriages before he can.

Your assignment for today, compare and contrast leaving your wife via news conference to leaving her when she's in the hospital with cancer.
This side of the room will take the Guiliani case, that side will take the Gingrich case in what has been called the Battle of the Adultering Threepeaters.

I think this is exactly backwards. I'd say it as:
There is arguably no prominent American better suited to "declare war" on marriage than Rudy Giuliani.
Giuliani is the poster boy for destroying marriage and the underlying person-to-person commitments -- gay, straight or otherwise.

On the other hand, who better to wage war on gay marriage than a guy who's already conducted a scorched-earth campaign against conventional marriage, and demolished it twice?

Guiliani and Mitt Romney should run together. Mitt thinks women are just empty vessels to be ordered around, possibly to hold his precious seed, but otherwise are not worthy of consideration as human beings. Guiliani is nothing but a serial rapist.
The two of them should do very well together -- and the added bonus is they represent the GOP very well.

It makes perfect sense. Perhaps I can shed some light here.
Marriage - unlike, say, oil - is a finite, non-renewable resource. In other words, there are only so many marriages to go around. If gays start using them up, then there will be fewer marriages available for guys like Giuliani. And Gingrich. And McCain.
I hope this has been helpful...

To be fair, gays were partly responsible for the dissolution of his marriage...if he didn't have that gay couple to move in with after his divorce, maybe he wouldn't have gotten divorced.
