IF IT'S SUNDAY.... Just yesterday, Dick Cheney explained his belief that it's time for some of the older establishment Republican voices to exit the stage. "I think periodically we have to go through one these sessions. It helps clear away some of the underbrush," the former vice president said, adding, "Some of the older folks who've been around a long time -- like yours truly -- need to move on and make room for that young talent that's coming along."

Keep that in mind when looking over the guest list for the Sunday morning shows for this weekend. Sam Stein noted:

2008 presidential nominee, Senator John McCain will be on ABC's "This Week." Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will be on "Fox News Sunday." And former Vice President Dick Cheney will be on "Face the Nation" on CBS. ("Face the Nation" confirmed that Cheney would be getting the full half hour.)

The Obama White House and DNC must be salivating at the slate. The latter two officials have been actively elevated by Democrats as the face of the GOP.

That's probably true. The more Cheney and Gingrich are the face of the Republican Party, the happier Democratic leaders are. Sometimes I wonder whether the DNC actually works the phones, urging producers to have these two on. McCain is hardly any better.

Indeed, that all of this is happening in the midst of an alleged "rebranding" effort is almost comical. Eric Cantor is trying to emphasize fresh faces, and Cheney concedes it's time to "clear away some of the underbrush," but there's the Sunday line-up, featuring a disgraced former House Speaker who left Congress 11 years ago, the 72-year-old defeated Republican presidential nominee, and a wildly unpopular former vice president who his own party wants to see go away.

I'd add, however, that these shows' producers really ought to expand their rolodexes a bit. During the Clinton years, Republican guests dominated. During the Bush years, Republican guests dominated. And a few months into Obama's presidency, we have a Sunday morning featuring Cheney, Gingrich, and McCain -- and no current or former Democratic elected officials.

If you were just arriving to America, and turned on cable news for the last couple of months, you would think the future of the GOP is a bigger issue than any other.

"Cheney concedes it's time to "clear away some of the underbrush,""

That's a strange way to use that phrase. When you clear the underbrush, you are removing the younger saplings and keeping the mature trees. Is that the opposite of what he's trying to say? It is however, consistent with what Cheney is doing, which is to keep showing up on TV and preventing new faces from getting airtime.

The guys running the corporate media are closet tea-baggers themselves. As a result, we won't be seeing much change either on the networks or cable stations. These guys love the likes of the thrice-married Gingrich.

should all these wingnuts be honoring the sabbath to keep it holy or something other than ruining my Sunday news shows?

Cheney is a Democrat plant. Tom Tomorrow discovered it way back in 2005. Check out - http://dir.salon.com/story/comics/tomo/2005/09/19/tomo/index.html

Do the idiots who book these shows know who won the last election and who runs the country now? Do they know that Dick Cheney has roughly the same approval rating as cancer, and no one but the beltway circlejerk crowd has any respect for him?
Well, they certainly know, but I guess they'd rather whip up more phoney controversy and maybe ratings than seriously discuss the future of the country.

You guys are forgetting the best part of a Sunday show lineup like that--besides the obvious joke about those guys being on teevee for Mother's Day. The best part comes on Monday when Limbaugh goes ballistic over something one of them says on a Sunday show.

Gotta stock up on popcorn.

Sweet Jesus! We've seen and heard more out of Dickhead Cheney in the last 3 months than we did the entire previous 8 long years. Wonder if someone is a bit sensitive about his legacy and perhaps feeling the need to attempt some CYA.

I know the MSM is ridiculous and irresponsible, but why they continue to give this much attention to a former VP who has, as Allan Snyder put it, the approval rating of cancer is beyond me. Did they miss the last election?

I wonder if Dickhead realizes that there is a special place in Hell for him?

Piss on him and his wife!

Heck, Meet the Press and Face the Nation ought to go all the way and reanimate Reagan's and Nixon's corpses for a joint appearance.

Shouldn't these guys be in church somewhere?

@Allan Snyder Republicans didn't win the election!???? Who knew. ( ya beat me to it) Seriously - if you dropped in from another planet they would look at the TEEVEE and say" So this is a national policy extending the courtesy of giving all the airtime to the party that lost, how nice"

I completely agree. Why is it the Republicans decide the talking points, the issues or any other agenda? WHERE ARE THE DEMOCRATS and the Progressive Agenda?

I'm so sick of fighting these "ideas" that are so wrong-headed. Yes, Obama won the election but it's like there's no one to show that he won - no one to tell the viewing public the Obama talking points, the issues or the agenda. It's all about what shouldn't happen versus what's really is happening and how it's the right track.

So tired .... who do we turn to to listen to us? If we stopped listening or pointing to them as they talk - would they disappear?

Great post, Steve. Indeed, this talk-show circuit has long since run out of gas. The jig is up.
These cats had their "moment of accountability" last November.
Their continued presence is a reminder of failed Bush policy.
And their rather aged presentation on the big screen tv (no offense of course to the aging) is a reminder of the youth and vigor of President Barack Obama.

Good thing no one but bloggers and politicians ever watch any of those shows.

Rethuglicans are dramatic flame throwers who run on crass, theatrical manipulation of fear and other emotions. Dems offer up Rethuglican ideas in a genteel manner. Who would you rather book for your show?

Hello. Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
I am from Liechtenstein and learning to speak English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Below you will record the part information from ibm in its economic environmental option."
