OUR SILLY DISCOURSE.... At the White House Correspondents Association dinner, Wanda Sykes delivered exactly the style of comedy that's made her a success, only she applied it to the political world. It's apparently caused quite a bit of heartburn in some corners.
"Rush Limbaugh said this administration fails," Sykes said in her most memorable bit of the night. "He just wants the country to fail. To me that's treason. He's not saying anything different than what Osama Bin Laden is saying. You might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight." After excessive groaning, Sykes asked, "Too much?"
Nearly 48 hours later, the answer for some is, "Yes." A variety of news outlets have been pondering the propriety of Sykes' Limbaugh mockery, and today, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs backed away from the joke. "I think there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy," Gibbs said. "I think there's no doubt that 9/11 is part of that."
That's not too big a surprise. Gibbs almost certainly knew this question was coming, and speaking from the White House podium, was likely to keep Sykes' joke at arm's length.
But what I find annoying about the discourse is that Sykes' joke, while obviously pushing the envelope, is hardly more outrageous than the typical daily edition of her intended target. I had an idea for how to drive this point home, but Adam Serwer beat me to it.
Wanda Sykes' comedy routine at the White House Correspondent's Dinner was really offensive. In it, Sykes suggested that conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh is supported by Hamas, and that Islamists are "constantly issuing Limbaugh talking points". She joked about terrorists supporting conservatives in general, suggesting that recent violent events in Iraq are attempts by terrorists to swing the upcoming midterm elections in favor of Republicans.
Then she got really personal. She joked that Limbaugh was a racist who doesn't want black people to "escap[e] the underclass". She accused him of being responsible for killing "a million babies a year", and aired her friend's theory that Limbaugh himself was a terrorist attack," a followup to 9/11. She also, most disgustingly, said that if conservatives kept apologizing to Limbaugh, they'd eventually contract "anal poisoning." She wondered when Republicans would finally stop "bending over and grabbing their ankles" for Limbaugh, and finally concluded that Limbaugh was just a "bad guy".
The punch line, of course, is that Sykes didn't say any of these things. They're all comments from Limbaugh, directed at the president or his party in the past year. Traditional news outlets rarely find any of this newsworthy, in part because it's so routine. He's a hateful radio host who says outrageous things for a living. It's just "Rush being Rush."
But it's partly why it's not worth getting worked up over Sykes' jokes. Not only was she going for a laugh, she's an actor/comedian with no political influence to speak of. Limbaugh says genuinely crazy things on a daily basis, but he's not kidding, he's the ostensible head of a major political party, and he has almost unrivaled power in conservative circles.
What's more, when the Obama White House was pressed on Sykes' provocative humor, the president's spokesperson offered no defense. When the Bush White House was pressed on Limbaugh's ugly attacks, the former administration's leadership would not only defend the radio host, but would also give him exclusive interviews as a reward.
Something to consider when the media flips out over Sykes.

The 'anal poisoning' comment really sticks in my craw. Because people don't just say weird things like that off the top of their head. It means it's something Rush has personally experienced and has fooled himself into believing is ubiquitous.
Probably something he picked up in the Dominican.

Anyone actually hear Wanda's comedy routine? She's got a sharp tongue and a sharper wit.
Truth is, Rush got bitch slapped by an unapologetic black lesbian and he's got all his little coterie of ass kissing weasels waving their fans in outrage.

Sure, but who cares what those out-of-power Republicans think anyway?

I thought some of Sykes' jokes were good, but the set up was terrible. I started cringing before she even told the first joke. Political humor shouldn't begin with, "I hate, hate, hate this person so much." It has to be delivered with a wink and a grin. Maybe Sykes can take some pointers from Obama.
But this doesn't rate much news attention. And Steve is absolutely right, compared to the shit that is broadcast everyday every hour over AM radio to millions of listeners is much, much, much more important than what someone says at a news correspondents dinner.
Then again, most news correspondents are supremely lazy, and, heck, they were there, so they have an opinion.

Wanda wins, Rush whines. Too bad.
The big difference is that Rush gets to spew his hate five days a week and, if we're lucky, his treachery is mentioned once or twice a year.
Keep rooting out evil, Wanda Sykes. I love you.

Rule #1: To criticize or joke about conservatives or republicans or Rushbo or the reich-wing is 'over the line'. That there is solid factual basis to the jokes or criticisms is irrelevant.
Rule #2: Attacking progressives or dumbocrats is always acceptable, regardless of the lack of truth to the attack. To believe otherwise is just being 'politically correct' and you know what conservatives think of 'politically correctness'.
I think it is hilarious that the reich-wing is totally upset. Long live the double standard!

There's no way Wanda Sykes can be as hateful as Rash Lardbaughl. Sadly, though, neither of them is funny.

I don't think anybody gives a shit. Wandy Sykes, a black gay woman, hit a bully back. Good for her. And it seems to me that the White House Correspondents Association keeps inviting people they know will say something "inappropriate," because otherwise nobody will care about their stupid dinner.

Maybe she should of held up a photo of Chelsea Clinton and said, "There is a dog in the Whitehouse." Acceptable humor to the Fat Boy.

The problem is our distorted sense (or lack there of) of humour.
Any joke is going to offend someone, somewhere, some when.
What's happening now is a full court rallying
behind Rush.
He will magically become patriotic for saying he wants Obama to fail.
Go figure.

Several readers already pointed to the hypocrisy. On this and other examples, we can apply the acronym, IOKIYAR, Its OK If You Are Republican.

Look, I can't stand Limbaugh, but these jokes just aren't funny. Maybe her live delivery made the jokes better. There's so much material to work with and she goes with 9/11?

Steve,
You're pulling your punches!
Nothing Wanda Sykes said was offensive. In the elephant-in-the-room context of Rush Limbaugh's constant, vitriolic and offensive attacks on Democrats -- Syke's material was a healthy antidote.
Gibbs and you and everyone else needs to make that explicit, and repeat it over and over until the sensitive flowers populating the DC peanut gallery get over the vapors.
No one needs to apologize for Wanda Sykes.
Wanda Sykes is not the problem.
Wanda Sykes did not provide "too much" reality.
The tizzy over teh smidgen of reality Sykes DID provide just shows how divorced from reality most folks in the news, pundit and political analysis industry really are.
And that's not so much sad as it is damaging to the national interest.

Good for Wanda . I just love watching conservatives clutch their pearls and faint on the couch at the outrageous , outrageous I tell you, comments. Lumbaugh can go cry to his new BFF Cheney

"So strung out on Oxycontin that he missed his flight"
That's the funniest fucking thing I've heard all year!

What is amazing to me is that Republicans can reach for the smelling salts after literally everything yet they are still considered the "strong guys", the "daddy party", whatever.
I mean, at what point does someone connect the dots and say these guys are a bunch of whiney babies? Especially when they try to say that some far left blogger or Ward Churchill or whoever speaks for the entire left wing of American politics.
Maybe I am going off on too much of a tangent here, but I remember they tried that shit last election, trying to get Obama to apologize for everything any black person said that hurt their feelings.
It's quite literally embarrasing, but again, they're the "daddy party".

These threads just aren't as fun without right-wingers coming here engaging in some faux-outrage in the comments section. In part because we've basically already pre-emptively called them out for being pearl-clutching hypocritical cowards.

I found her high-pitched voice a tad annoying, but that's me. And I wasn't all that amused at her kidney failure and waterboarding joke. But, the "missed his flight, because he was too strung out on Oxycontin"? Pure gold.
German occupation of Poland during WWII was, to us, probably a bigger trauma than 9/11 was to US. But, as soon as Poland was free, the films about those days were, in almost equal measure, dramas and comedies. Laughter is the best medicine there is to chase off the fears and the nightmares. The longer US tiptoes around 9/11 with an obligatory funereal face, the longer the wounds will fester. Remember the dead with respect, yes; but life is also for the living and the living need to laugh.

Is it too early to start thinking about next year's dinner, 'cause I'd love it if the planners were dialing Chris Rock's number right about now.

It's funny how Rush is only an "entertainer" when it's convenient for him. Now suddenly he's an elder statesman who can't be the object of the same kind of jokes he subjects other people to.
However, I guarantee you that Rush did not and will not address this controversy on the air, except maybe with a few mumbles about "dignity" and "staying above it all." That's because he knows that Wanda Sykes would wipe the floor with him if he tried to hit back. He's just going to crouch in his cave and let his friends try and defend him because he knows there's absolutely no way he can win against her.

First and foremost, the stuff was funny. That's the job of a comic. "I could break Hannity by putting him in a middle seat in coach" is priceless!
Sometimes we political junkies and analysts should put away the intellectual slide rules and pocket protectors and have some fun.

The Republicans say essentially the same things about the POTUS and his staff and fellow memebers of Congress every day.
How does it feel Rush, Steele, McCain, Cantor, Boehner?
Louder, I can't hear you?
Why aren't you laughing?

I listened to Rush for a few minutes today to see if he picked up on it. He didn't say a thing about the jokes, because of course he would have had to repeat them so his listeners would know why they were "offensive."

Considering the beating we liberals/progressives have taken the last 8 to 10 years from the likes of Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity, O'Reilly, etc., this was nothing. Coulter has books that don't imply but say outright that liberals are traitors. I think this is just a case of them being given some of their own hateful rhetoric. It's pretty obvious these rightwing radicals like to dish it out; but, can't take it.
Posted by: Bonnie on May 11, 2009 at 9:58 PM | PERMALINK
Oh poor Rush. Even fucking Olbermann said she went too far. A man whose whole show basically rides on the pretense of Limbaugh, O Reilly, and Beck/Hannity being the three worst people in the world five days a week, suddenly gives a shit that a comedian jokes that she hopes his kidney fails?
Maybe it's true what they say, all journalists are a club (and pseudo, depending what you call Rush, I call him neither, but I digress), and only they can take potshots at each other. It was like a 10 day jerkfest when Russert died.
Oh, and for the record, as far as I'm concerned, NOTHING is out of bounds for comedy. Laughter is one of the best things we have in this world. But this is from a huge fan of Hicks, Cross, and now even...doug stanhope? yep. comedians whose whole point is to be offensive and challenge people.

It would seem like it should be common sense to prosecute Rushbo (and many others) for incitement to riot when the next Pittsburgh cop killing goes down somewhere.
Why do they hate America so much?

How long now before Fox drops plans for Wanda's Saturday night talk show based on a call from Rush? Fox just dropped Spike Feresten and the rumor was she would be replacing him since Fox signed her to a deal.
I thought Wanda was great and correct...Rush is against the government and that is treason.
I still think the best year at this dinner was when the Bush White House had Stephen Colbert without realizing that he was a liberal comedian who was satirizing Republican talk show hosts. They actually thought he was Republican and then he came out and ripped everyone, it was great!
