A BIG TENT.... And Republicans wonder why they struggle with minority communities.

[Kim] Hendren explained, "I don't use a teleprompter and occasionally I put my foot in my month." At the meeting, Hendren addressed the comments that Sen. Schumer made shortly before last week's meeting. Sen. Schumer, appearing on MSNBC's Rachael Maddow Show, said "The hard right, which still believes that when the Federal Government moves, we chop off its hands, still believes in the traditional values kind of arguments, in strong foreign policy, all that is over."

Hendren told me, "At the meeting I was attempting to explain that unlike Sen. Schumer, I believe in traditional values, like we used to see on 'The Andy Griffith Show.' I made the mistake of referring to Sen. Schumer as 'that Jew' and I should not have put it that way as this took away from what I was trying to say."

Hendren is a member of the Arkansas State Senate, and is currently a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate.

If he wins next year, Hendren will be able to tell "that Jew" all about the "traditional values" he saw on "The Andy Griffith Show."

Update: Hendred told the AP today, "When I referred to him as Jewish, it wasn't because I don't like Jewish people... I shouldn't have gotten into this Jewish business because it distracts from the issue."

Yeah, that's much better. Good thing Hendren clarified matters.

That honky really said that?

Oh, wait, I'm sorry.

Someone should tell this guy Andy Griffith is a big ol' Democrat.

Posted by: EarBucket on May 14, 2009 at 2:51 PM | PERMALINK

I should not have put it that way as this took away from what I was trying to say.

What was he really trying to say; "that hook-nosed kike"?

Wow. An anti-Semite in the GOP. Color me amazed.

I used to know one of the writers from the Andy Griffith show. Jewish, naturally. He really loved fishing, and he thought it was funny going to places like Arkansas on vacation. He'd be fishing and people would line up along the banks to watch him, once they heard a writer for Andy Griffith was there. They never would have known it was written by a bunch of Jews in Hollywood.

Andy Griffith was a criminal-coddling liberal who cared more about winning elections than keeping terrorists off our streets. Give me the values of "Father Knows Best" or give me death!

Now, will somebody please give him his one bullet.

NARRATOR: No one was making fun of Andy Griffith. I can’t emphasize that enough.

Posted by: TheNarrator on May 14, 2009 at 2:55 PM | PERMALINK

... his name is Kim?

Posted by: Gonads on May 14, 2009 at 2:56 PM | PERMALINK

Someone needs to tell Hendren the truth about Sheldon Leonard, the creator of The Andy Griffith Show...

Posted by: larry birnbaum on May 14, 2009 at 2:57 PM | PERMALINK

Lighten up guys!

Maybe I should not have referred to Schumer as 'that Jew'. I should have been more specific and referred to him as 'the Jew Senator from Jew York City representing the Jewish Bankers'.

It's not like I insulted a real American who I would need to apologize to - like Rush Limbaugh or Pat Robertson.

Sincerely.

You have to give Hendren credit for having a values that have stood the test of time. The values he cherishes go all the way back to black and white TV.

Posted by: dwight meredith on May 14, 2009 at 3:10 PM | PERMALINK

Traditional values, eh? Sheriff Andy Taylor:

-Never carried a gun.
-Never spanked his son.
-Had an open door jail policy for Otis the town drunk.
-Dated a career woman (more than one, actually).

Indeed, the only thing that suggests he wasn't a liberal Democrat is that he gave a job to his incompetent best friend, which is much more the Republican style.

and... he voted for obama (starts at 1:24):

googling for this brought up the initial horrified (and funny) reaction of freepers:

I wonder if Hugh Hewitt has had Clint Howard on. I believe Clint is a conservative.

For heavens sake, wake up you are in the 21st century. Stop living in the past, look ahead and see what the future holds.

I just realized it: this is *perfect* evidence about how today's GOP has a big tent. It has room for people who hate blacks, Hispanics, Jews, and all sorts of other non-white males. You want diversity? I give you the GOP's diversity of hate!

The best career move this guy can now make is to move to that mythical state between Bolivia and Argentina where children march, Wagner's operas run 24/7 and elderly Nazis wistfully dream of Hitler's return.

Andy and Barney were cousins, as was revealed in the very first episode (when Aunt Bee first comes to live in the Taylor house).

Zorro - You forgot about the group they hate most of all: Liberals. They hate us so much that they're actually trying to woo black voters, which is ironic, as our stance on equality is a big reason they started hating us in the first place.

Even racists prefer black conservatives over white liberals; just as long as the black knows his place.

Aunt Bee was South London.

I think Hendren really meant to say that he has the same values as Larry 'Lonesome' Rhodes, the character that Andy Griffith played in the 1957 film A Face In The Crowd:

An Arkansas hobo becomes an overnight media sensation. But as he becomes drunk with fame and power, will he ever be exposed as the fraud he has become?

Posted by: SecularAnimist on May 14, 2009 at 3:39 PM | PERMALINK

I made the mistake of referring to Sen. Schumer as 'that Jew' and I should not have put it that way as this took away from what I was trying to say."

I'm deeply offended by anti-semitism, but I'm sorry, this is the most inadvertently hilarious lines ever. This man clearly is too dumb to put on his pants without someone showing him which leg is left and which is right.

I beg to differ. It made it very clear what he was trying to say.

He also said "I don’t care if he’s Jewish, Muslim, Catholic or whatever." Something tells me Bill Donahoe should be annoyed at this...

but aren't the crickets lovely tonight?

"I don't use a teleprompter and occasionally I put my foot in my month," Hendren told Arkansas blogger Jason Tolbert.

Really, Mr. Hendren? The only way you can refrain from offensive comments to read a script of a teleprompter?

Posted by: kc on May 14, 2009 at 4:02 PM | PERMALINK

The "I don't use a teleprompter" line is particularly tasty. Because when you're caught being the stupidest Jew-baiter who ever staggered into Little Rock, the best defense is to criticize the oratory skills of the best political speaker of most of our lifetimes. Yeah, there's a comparison you want to put front and center for the readers. Kim and Barack.

Posted by: shortstop on May 14, 2009 at 4:15 PM | PERMALINK

I'm surprised he didn't say 'Jewboy'. Isn't that the 'traditional' epithet from the 'values' crowd? Or, has Hendren gone all squishy and PC on his traditional values supporters?

Posted by: JoeW on May 14, 2009 at 4:19 PM | PERMALINK

Should we overlook what K. Hendren has said and written, he is afterall a few generations behind in the evolution chain.

Posted by: Ted76 on May 14, 2009 at 4:25 PM | PERMALINK

he is afterall a few generations behind in the evolution chain.

Hendren probably doesn't "believe" in evolution, and to prove it he tries hard not to evolve.

Posted by: qwerty on May 14, 2009 at 5:09 PM | PERMALINK

Setting aside the anti-semitism, although that takes work, this shows us again that the GOP derives its ethos from TV fairy tales. The result is wrong and insulting with Andy Griffith, disastrous with shows like "24" or, for that matter, cop shows that show cops getting supposedly viable confessions after "tuning up," i.e., physically abusing, suspects. I loved "NYPD Blue," but typical interrogation methods were horrible. When are the GOP numskulls going to figure out that TV is fiction, including much of its "news"? That TV writers really do make their own reality but in real life, even though the Bush people tried it, reality cannot be denied?

Posted by: sf on May 14, 2009 at 5:17 PM | PERMALINK

Un..believable.

Sen. Schumer was probably offended, but I'll bet he also got a giggle out of how stupid that was. I mean really, how can you not howl with laughter at someone who puts his foot in his month?

What a maroon!

Wait wait, I'm overlooking the obvious -- he's trying to get a Republican party leadership position. he's competing with Limbaugh, Palin, Bachmann and the others.

Makes me wonder how this will be written about in the history books. It truly is an amazing moment in political history.

Posted by: MarkH on May 14, 2009 at 7:54 PM | PERMALINK

I'm waiting for Hendren to say something about getting Jeannie or Samantha's help to clean up Washington. (Or perhaps, in a bid to get the all-important youth vote, he'll cite Sabrina instead.)
