ELIMINATING THE SECURITY GAP.... Struggling in most areas of public policy, most notably the economy, Republicans have gone after President Obama on national security grounds -- the one area that has favored the GOP in recent years. It's led to a multi-prong offensive on everything from handshakes to Gitmo to torture.

And based on one new study, it's not working.

A new Democracy Corps poll released by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner today shows that after 100 days in office, President Barack Obama has, at least for now effectively erased doubts that Americans have historically harbored about the Democratic Party's vision and competence on national security.

For the first time in our research, Democrats are at full parity on perceptions of which party would best manage national security, while they have moved far ahead of the GOP on specific challenges such as Afghanistan, Iraq, working with our allies, and improving America's image abroad.

Nearly two-thirds of likely voters -- 64 percent -- approve of the job Obama is doing on national security. That is 6 points higher than his already strong overall job approval rating (at 58 percent, the highest we have yet recorded). On other aspects of national security -- from Iraq, to Afghanistan, to terrorism, to the president's foreign diplomacy -- the same is true: higher job approval ratings than on the President's overall job approval.

Given their approval of the president's performance on foreign affairs, voters flatly reject the claims from former Vice President Cheney and other Republicans that Obama's policies put America at risk. By nearly a 2 to 1 margin, Americans say that President Obama is doing better, not worse, than his predecessor, George W. Bush, when it comes to national security.

In fairness, Democracy Corps is a Democratic outfit, and Stan Greenberg, who conducted the survey, is a Democratic pollster.

But the results don't seem necessarily tilted. In fact, Obama's approval rating in the poll (58%) is lower than in most other national surveys of late.

If accurate, the numbers show the GOP losing its one key policy advantage. While the poll shows Americans preferring Republicans on "ensuring a strong military," Dems now lead on U.S. policy in Afghanistan, in Iraq, and in foreign policy in general. Asked which party they prefer on counter-terrorism, the two parties were tied.

A narrow majority of Americans said Bush's policies "undermined" U.S. security interests, and a large majority said Obama is doing better than his predecessor on national security.

Joe Klein added, "[W]e should not underestimate the significance here: Obama is trying to do something far more complicated and sophisticated than Bush--comprehensive diplomacy takes time and great skill. It doesn't have the immediate satisfactions of a bang-bang, three-week rush to Baghdad.... But, for the moment, the American people seem content with a more nuanced foreign policy, which is very good news, indeed."

Although greeted by me as good news, it's still a Democratically biased poll no matter how one cuts the mustard.

Stan Greenberg has too much history and experience in polling to just toss him aside as a partisan. You'll have to do better than that.

I', watching Michael Steele explain to his 20& base that the "Honeymoon is over" and the Repugs ( he has not once said DemocratIC Party)will stop cowering to a "Popular" President", with Unpopular Ideas. This guy is TOTALLY out there in another Universe. He is blaming Obama for 2 million job losses this year, like King George has NOTHING to do about where we stand today.

My main points are: 120 days of 3 total Repug votes on his main policy plans is a honeymoon?
And, basically, all our problems are DUE to the Honeymoon period of Obama's first 120 days.

Andrea has just called his speech "the Republican Manifesto" with all the positive intent(scorn) expressed in her voice, and Shays waging his tail "happily" after the speech. Shays even admitted to Andrea that there were NO NEW IDEAS in the speech.

Hell of a day to look forward( new policy suggestions) instead of backwards( total disdain, backed by LIES, againt Democrats everywhere.

This is going to be a great day to be a DEMOCRAT!!

Go Obama

Bubba - if he had worked with a Republican polling firm as he so often does on NPR, I'd have more faith in the results. He's very well respected in all circles and I'm hoping these numbers are fairly accurate. But still....

It could be easily demonstrated that the GOP are, in fact, bad for national AND international security but you won't hear it from our patrician media, who have propagated the myth of Republican machismo using marketing techniques perfected by McDonald's.

Of national security interest?

“ACCORDING TO AN NBC/WALL ST. JOURNAL POLL, 85% BELIEVE THAT DICK CHENEY’S LESBIAN DAUGHTER, MARY, IS THE ONLY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY WHO DOES NOT PRESENT A THREAT TO THE VALUES OF THE UNITED STATES.”

Steve, you wrote:

You're almost right. The results might be tilted, but if they are, they are tilted away from the Democratic position, rather than toward it.

This exerpt from a letter that Greenberg wrote to Ed Gillespie regarding Resurgent Republic, the GOP's would-be answer to Democracy Corps, places puts it in perspective:

One thing Democracy Corps has tried to do is be very “conservative” – watching very closely to make sure all our choices in survey design are well grounded or tilted against the Democrats, including the choice of “likely voters” that normally favors the Republicans. You have probably noticed that our job approval ratings for George Bush were almost always higher than the average of polls, just as our job approval ratings for Barack Obama are now somewhat lower.

If the Resurgent Republic poll is to be an outlier on partisanship, then I urge you to explain what about your methodology produces it – or simply to note the difference in your public release.

The problem of partisanship pales before the problem of self-deluding bias in question wording that might well contribute to Republicans digging themselves deeper and deeper into a hole.

In other words, a goal of Democracy Corps is to make sure that Democrats don't get overconfident by either underestimating the GOP's strengths or overestimating their own.

Oh my, Michael Steele is getting "real" with his party.

“Our comeback is well underway out in the states, I can assure you of that… The folks inside the beltway don’t know it yet, but the people are beginning to rally, the comeback has begun. Those of you who live outside of Washington know what I’m talking about. Those of you who actually attend Lincoln Day dinners, county party events, and tea parties …those of you who toil in the vineyards, spending time in communities, in diners, barber shops, and coffee shops where real every day people can be found…you know it is real.”

Here's Steele moving his party forward

“But the thing we need to remember is this: Ronald Reagan never lived in the past. Ronald Reagan was all about the future. If President Reagan were here today he would have no patience for Americans who looked backward. Ronald Reagan always insisted that our party must move aggressively to seize the moment, he insisted that our party recognize the truth of the times and establish our first principles in both word and deed. As conservatives we must stop acting like we don’t really believe in our principles. Too often we act as if we are scared to apply our timeless principles to today’s problems and challenges…"

Maybe that is what a several year hangover does to you?
