THE OTHER SIDE OF NIMBY.... The conventional wisdom on bringing Gitmo detainees to U.S. soil isn't quite right.

During the May 20 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, NBC News correspondent Savannah Guthrie falsely claimed of detainees held at the detention center in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba: "No congressman wants these detainees in their district."

One of the more interesting developments of the past several days is seeing how untrue this is. Media Matters noted that Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), for example, has offered use of the Albert V. Bryan U.S. Courthouse and Detention Center in Alexandria, Virginia. Likewise, Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Pa.) said if the government wants to built a maximum security prison in his district, he'd be happy to have detainees sent to his area.

Yesterday, Carl Levin (D-Mich.) extended a similar offer, suggesting the construction of a new maximum-security in Michigan would help his state. (Former Michigan Gov. John Engler (R) raised the specter of a "Guantanamo North" in the U.P.)

What's more, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) told reporters yesterday, "Yes, we have maximum security prisons in California eminently capable of holding these people as well, and from which people -- trust me -- do not escape."

And then there's the town of Hardin, Montana, where the city council voted unanimously to tell federal officials that they'd take the detainees no one else wants.

In this case, the NIMBY problem is clearly not universal.

Dear Dems: More of this, please.

I saw Engler's suggestion about relocating them to the U.P. of Michigan on some other blog...I am a native of this part of the USA... it prompted several blog comments , one suggested that then waterboarding could be utilized using Lake Superior water which typically doesnt exceed about 50F in the summer ....

I like the U.P. idea, however, I know that there are many uninhabited islands in Lake Superior that might be optimal for this purpose. Heck, Isle Royale is 70 miles off the northern tip of the U.P. and is still considered a U.S. National Park.

If I were so inclined, I would argue that detainees in Gitmo could actually get out and swim away from Cuba.

However, that isn't going to happen in Lake Superior, whether its summer or winter. No middle-eastern guy in an orange jump suit will be swimming in the frigid waters during the summer nor doing an figure skating routine during the winter.

That prison in Montana is completely empty at this point as well. Talk about a wasted resource. They have a 10% unemployment rate in the town and a 47% rate on the reservation. Sounds like they could use the help.

It isn't NIMBY, it's NIABY- not in anyones back yard. This is about keeping them out of the ENTIRE mainland U.S. as if they will infect THEIR constituents from YOUR prisons like some sort of terrorism pox or something. They're basically forcing a single nationwide NIMBY decision down onto everybody.

It's JIMBYism - Jobs in my backyard.

Which, given that these prisons are awfully hard to break out of, anyone that did break out would be unarmed and probably looking to leave the neighborhood ASAP, and create a lot of jobs for guards and service workers and whatnot, makes a lot more sense.

Hey! Some of us would like to keep it that way. Pick another island!

Joe Scarborough and Mika the Mindless have turned their show into nothing but 100% Republican spin and misinformation. It's hard to believe this lite-version of Fox & Friends is on the same network as their evening shows. And they each pretend that the other doesn't exist.

So where the heck were these guys about a week ago?

Remember, everytime a Republican says something untrue, the response has to be swift and harsh. Everyone fell down on this, so we have to be vigilent... and proactive,

I cannot watch Joe Scarboro any more, I wish more dems would boycott his show, let us push down his ratings & also send emails to MSNBC. Would love Schuster. Also, if we are too chicken to take our prisoners (who have not yet been convicted) how can we expect other countries to.

I'm sure the good people of Kansas could manage just fine. Riley, Leavenworth alone should suffice.
And as has been mentioned in numerous venues - Supermax is pretty secure, too.

I'd guess the biggest difficulty imprisoning the alleged AQ detainees will be keeping them out of the reach of the general population. Your ordinary decent criminals will probably be more than happy to hold an extra-judicial execution, given the opportunity. Regardless of whether any given detainee has actually been found guilty of anything.

no, Savannah Guthrie was right. no REAL congressman wants detainees in their district.

democrats are not real congressmen.

this has been a public newspeak interpretation service.

Shortstop

I didn't mean to imply that we should use Isle Royale. Being from Michigan, I want to keep it a National Park as well.

I only mentioned it to note the distance from land and temperature range that exists in Lake Superior while still being in the U.S. They'd be better off escaping to Canada from there than to the U.S.

"No congressman wants these detainees in their district."

Real congressmen don't have a (D) after their name.

What's more, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) told reporters yesterday, "Yes, we have maximum security prisons in California eminently capable of holding these people as well, and from which people -- trust me -- do not escape."

That's not a particularly good quote to quote, given that our Republican-in-Democrat's-clothing Senator then proceeded to join the 90 morons in the vote to deny funding and "protect" America.

Dianne Feinstein and Jerry Brown - the two California Democrats who always make me vote Republican, since that way I at least know I am voting for the enemy.

It's going to be hilarious over the next few days to see all these congresspeople walk back their objections to imprisoning the Gitmo detainnees in their districts as their spongy brains absorb the fact that building prisons, or upgrading existing prisons and adding security staff creates a lot of good jobs.

Sorry to have been dense, GreyGuy. Yes, the big lake, they said, never gives up her dead. Not a place you'd want to take a dip.

Not a place you'd want to take a dip.
Well, not unless you're taking that particular dip for a one-way boat trip.

This is a good tactic. Housing detainee will bring federal dollars to local communities that have the requisite facilities. People in those communities should be asked if they would be willing to have the detainees in the prison if it meant more jobs and economic prosperity.
