KILLER IDEOLOGIES.... Michael Steele has a way with words. Consider these remarks to Human Events, a right-wing magazine.
"The Republican Party's credibility as the reliably conservative choice has been damaged, and it's up to us to fix it. Faith, freedom, personal responsibility, respect for life and prosperity" Then he added, "Like a bad diet, liberalism will kill you. It's a drug we don't need to be hooked on. We are what stand between an America of prosperity or dependency. Which one do you want?"
Following up on an item from a couple of weeks ago, I keep thinking about Howard Dean's tenure in early 2005, shortly after he took over as DNC chairman. He had a tendency to make some provocative comments -- including telling a California audience that Republicans are "a pretty monolithic party. They all behave the same. They all look the same. It's pretty much a white Christian party."
If you go back and look at that period, you'll notice that reporters (and Republicans) pressed Democratic leaders on whether they agreed with Dean, every time the party chairman would say something controversial. In the case of the "white Christian party," John Edwards, Joe Biden, and Bill Richardson all publicly distanced themselves from Dean.
If Dean had ever dared to tell a strident political magazine that "conservatism will kill you" -- a day after emphasizing the importance of "class" and "dignity" -- I suspect the response would have been pretty intense. Every Democratic leader would be asked whether they're comfortable with Dean's attacks.
But I get the sense that Steele is perceived as such a loose cannon, comments like these hardly seem controversial anymore.

Or you could say that Howard Dean's comments struck a nerve. Steele's comments are just incoherent.

Why should the press care about Steele? They've got a huge collective man-crush going on for Cheney, now.
Steele, well they're just "over" Steele.

Or it could be that the corporate media has a different set of standards for dumbocraps than they do for rethugnicans...

Faith, freedom, personal responsibility, respect for life and prosperity
Yeah, that describes the last eight years. Faith in the constitution, freedom to protest, personal responsibility of bankers and swaps dealers, respect for the lives of New Orleaneans, and a healthy economy. Steele miht as well be doing the soft shoe.

Or it could be that everyone already knows that pretty much every Republican would agree with him because they're such a monolithic, white, christian party.

Please don't let the MSM off so easily. There will be no pushback or followup because it was said by a Republican/Conservative about Liberals/Democrats.
If this were Gillespie, Atwater, Barbour, Brock, ANY OF THEM there would be the same reaction. Liberals are extremists, extremists are not.

It's Always Okay If You're A Republican

Liberal bashing is perfectly OK because that's been the cant for so long. However, describing reality by saying the Republicans are a "pretty monolithic party. They all behave the same. They all look the same. It's pretty much a white Christian party" Well that's just bashing a persecuted minority, and we wouldn't want to do that.

Dean had it wrong. The GOP is pretty much monolithic all right. But he failed to mention that it is a white Christian party that is dumber than a sack of hammers.

Oh that silly Howard, he is always saying things he doesn't mean!
You know like that Joe guy who kids around about his hidden bunker and funny stuff like swine flu. Silly boys!

Wow, the GOP is now the pro-slavery party!

Steele is benefiting from the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Perhaps it is because the press has so many Republicans saying stupid things to choose from (e.g. Michelle Bachman, James Inhofe, Joe Barton, and Rick Perry to name just a few)they have an embarrassment of riches.

This is just another example of IOKIYAR. Unlike Democrats, so-called "moderate" Republicans are never hounded by the media to denounce the latest nutjob statement from one of their party's extremist leaders.
