'DAISY,' REDUX.... In 1964, LBJ's presidential campaign aired its infamous "Daisy" ad, just once, to drive home the point that it wouldn't be an especially good idea to have Barry Goldwater with his finger on the button.
Periodically, Republicans have tried to respond with "Daisy" ads of their own. In 2006, the RNC tried to scare the bejesus out of voters, suggesting a vote for Democratic congressional candidates is a vote for a nuclear attack by al Qaeda.
This didn't work. Today, the RNC is trying again.
The RNC is launching a Web ad on Friday highlighting Democrats' divisions over the future of Guantanamo Bay, ABC News has learned.
The ad intersperses video from one of the most famous and controversial political ads of all time -- Lyndon Johnson's "Daisy" ad from the 1964 presidential campaign against Barry Goldwater.
"To close it? To close it not?" a voice asks several times, with video playing of the little girl from the LBJ ad.
The ad shows several clips of Democrats -- including Obama, Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. -- contradicting each other over what the fate of Guantanamo should be.
The Web ad fades with a single word on the screen: "Really?"
This isn't an actual ad that television viewers will see; it's a web ad that the RNC expects news networks to air, over and over again, for free. I suspect that part of the strategy will work pretty well.
For that matter, the video reinforces the consequences of Democrats on the Hill caving to conservative complaints and buying into the right's fearmongering.
But the message itself is hopelessly absurd. To equate closing a detention facility with the threat of a nuclear war only suggests the RNC has a child-like understanding of national security threats.
It's a desperate move from hapless RNC leaders.

I'm working on a counter ad of Cheney talking about the connection twixt Iraq and al Queda, with Divine eating dog crap in "Pink Flamingos". The final caption will be a statement, not a question: "Really."

I am going to go home and lock all the doors barricade myself in and prepare for the worst. It is obvious from what the Republicans have been telling me , our Supermax prisons are not secure and we will soon be overun with escaped murderes, rapists and low-lifes. The child like thinking processes of the braintrust currently in charge is byond comprehension. Exactly who do they think they are appealing to? Do they not have within their party any adults?

Steve: In the ad there is a misleading use of remarks by Gibbs from a White House briefing:
“We have made some hasty decisions that are now going to take some time to unwind. And closing Guantanamo Bay obviously is one of those decisions "
The "we" is the US; andthe hasty decision referred to Bush administration decision to set up Gunatanamo in the first place.

Is it really child-like understanding of national security by the RNC or are they just doing what they always do -- counting on the ignorance of many Americans to monger yet another healthy dose of fear. Sadly, it'll work, thanks to the MSM, and the Guantanamo debate will escalate, which, of course, is exactly what the GOP wants. If Gitmo remains open they'll bleat and squeal from now til November 2010 (and beyond) that Gitmo wasn't closed because Bush was right and Obama was wrong. Count on it.

What is most frustrating about these strategies, however, and continually, is their long-term pervasive effects. The Republican approach, when repeated, makes people stupid with their fast emotional black-and-white escalations.
I know why the Republicans want people to be stupid. It is the only way they can garner enough support to stay in power.
This is why I take my position as a teacher very seriously.

Guess the RNC missed that "home of the brave" part of the National Anthem. The Republicans have systematically worked to rob us of our courage and our faith in the institutions that have made our nation great for over two hundred years. If there is a God, he or she should damn them for that alone.

Well, we can call them "hapless" but the Guantanamo cave-in shows how effective this kind of demogoguery is. On issue after issue, the right pretty much sets the parameters of our political discourse and debate. Yes, they look shrill and hypocritical but they move enough focus-group needles to make Democrats nervous.
Obama's post-partisanship is not simply incipient Broderism. It's an effort to counter right-wing demogoguery with the only weapon available to our side. He really has no other choice. Liberals don't do demogoguery because we don't have the megaphones on talk radio and cable TV. We don't have a base that is permanently jazzed with Us vs Them thinking. We don't have a media somersaulting for our talking points like they do for Newt Gingrich's.
Every chance I get I remind people that there's an ongoing war for their hearts and minds. Yes, people are really disgusted by Republicans. But on issue after issue - guns, global warming, Gitmo, torture, health care, and even Wall Street regulations - the right keeps winning.
So, we can laugh all we want and feel superior to these clowns. But they're winning where it matters.

"child-like understanding..." You're being too kind.

No they're not Walt. We have the presidency, the House, and 59.5 Senators. Their brand is toxic, with their most beloved and eloquent leader being a discredited radio comedian. They win occasional skirmishes but we're kicking their ass in the war.

But the children! Please, listen to me, won't someone think of the children!?!?

The above statement would be more accurate if you deleted everything after 'child-like.'

Chocolate Thunder, yeah, we're winning elections and ceding all the issues that matter. From the torture issue to banks to Gitmo to card-check to a carbon tax to systematic health care reform to DADT.
Elections are important. But not as important as controlling the message. We not only don't do that, we're failing miserably. And I'm not blaming Democrats here so much as acknowledging the right-wing basis for reality management: talk radio, cable TV, and chain e-mails.

It's always nuclear with these people. "We can't wait for the smoking gun in the form of a mushroom cloud" was the rational for invading Iraq. And didn't Lord Vader say something in his AEI speech yesterday about "nuclear armed terrorists," as if some guy will be getting off an airplane at LAX with a Koran in one hand and a nuke in the other?

Well sure ! I saw it on "24" That is a news show isn't it?

Closing Gitmo = nuclear event.
WTF?
I am becoming very suspicious of the GOP talking points theses days.
I suggest that everyone keep their guard up.
An "event" would chase folks back to the fear mongering morons that took over our country during the Bush years.
It's getting old, very old.
To the MSM...... do not air this web add for free.

Oh Gitmo, how we love thee! Let us count the terrorists!
to be progressive is to love the terrorist and hate the unborn.

And since the only people in Washington more hapless than the Republicans are the Dumbocraps, I expect it will work well - in fact, it already has with those morons.

"It's a desperate move from hapless RNC leaders."
Maybe. But the lazy programmers at 24-hour news networks will fall for it hook, line and sinker.

Here's a little secret: no one is really afraid of the Gitmo detainees, and all the obstructionism has no other object than to spare Bush and his partisans an embarrassing rebuke. Dems really don't need to cave on this.
