STILL STUNTING THE STIMULUS.... We're approaching the end of May, and it seems like the debate over the economic recovery package has been over for a long while, but there are still some pockets of obstinacy. For example, there's Alaska:

Gov. Sarah Palin on Thursday became the only governor to turn down federal stimulus money for energy efficiency, a move that legislators called "disappointing" for a state with some of the country's highest energy costs.

In announcing the veto of $28.6 million in funds, Palin said she wouldn't accept money tied to adoption of building codes by local governments. [...]

State budget director Karen Rehfeld said the Republican governor was concerned that in accepting the money, she would be required to promote the adoption of local building codes. To qualify for the federal money, 90 percent of new and renovated structures in the state would have to be constructed under energy efficiency standards between 2009 and 2017.

State lawmakers responded that this is a misguided reason for opposition, since Alaska had largely already met the federal mandate. And since Alaska could benefit from efficiency and energy reduction programs, lawmakers from both parties said Palin's concerns don't add up. The legislature will try to override the governor, and accept the $28.6 million. If not, it will be divvied up among the rest of the states.

And then there's South Carolina:

Gov. Mark Sanford is taking the General Assembly to court after lawmakers required him to accept $350 million in disputed federal money by overriding his budget vetoes.

Sanford quickly announced the federal suit after the Senate voted 34-11 on a state budget that forces him to accept the money.

"We know a suit will be filed against us on this issue, and as such we've filed a suit tonight in response," Sanford said in a prepared statement. "We believe the Legislature's end-around move won't pass constitutional muster."

Yes, the governor would rather sue his legislature than accept federal funding that would go to bolster schools and public safety.

I guess Palin and Sanford must really want to impress that GOP base.

My state's governor is Mitch Daniels, a conservative Republican. I certainly don't always agree with him on policy or politics. But you know what? He's not a fucking idiot, and that gives me comfort.

Rather than accepting money, he will fight it in court? His state must not be hurting as badly as mine if he's willing to spend the hundreds of thousands of dollars on a court case.

How could you miss this?

"While Gov. Rick Perry is criticizing Washington bailouts, state lawmakers are planning to use $11 million in federal stimulus money to help rebuild the badly burned Texas Governor's Mansion.

Top budget negotiators said Thursday that a House-Senate committee agreed on the expenditures late Wednesday night.

Around $10 million in state tax money will also be spent on the renovation of the mansion, which was badly burned in an arson fire last summer.

Asked if Perry approved of using federal money for the mansion, House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jim Pitts said: "He just wanted it done." Perry spokeswoman Allison Castle released a short, written statement late Thursday saying only that work on the budget was continuing."

Both are off and running for 2012. Their base will no doubt cheer on their silly "cut off my nose to spite my face" antics.

Unfortunately, their base is not the only constituency who will be voting. . .

Palin and Sanford hate federal cash
A position some find rather crass
Their people can't find jobs
High energy prices cause deep sobs
But they like kissing old Rush Limbaugh's ass

Sorry Hoosier Paul, you are wrong if you believe that Mitch Daniels is not an idiot!

Mitch's buddies want Interstate 69 extended from Indianapolis to Evansville. This would be a new Interstate. Last week it was announced that the costs would be considerably higher than what Mitch has been proclaiming.

My proof that Daniels is an idiot - He announced that the new highway should still be built, but to save money they should ignore federal requirements and built it with a narrower median and to further save money they should not put as deep a pavement on it.

The question is not whether he is an idiot, but whether he is just an idiot or is a total idiot? But then again, he is a rethugnican and does not have to give a shit about the safety of those driving on his new highway or the higher future costs because of inadequate initial construction.

I wish I had a catchy limerick to summate these two fine individuals but I'm too much of a socialist. I'll considers Kurts an all in one doctrine.

Yes, just tell them they won't be allowed to run for president and see how quickly they accept the money. The party of Hypocrisy always says "Country First" when it always "Politics" first and Party first.

Neither of these Gov.'s excuses hold water and they are just so transparently shallow.

It should be high comedy to see the grounds for Sanford's suit against the legislature. I wasn't aware that state legislatures even could be sued.

It no longer surprises me to find that a GOP executive doesn't have any use for democracy, and believes that the people elected him dictator.

End run? Since when did the employment of a constitutional process by the legislature become and "end run?" Republicans have fulfilled every Orwellian prediction so far.

And then there's Virginia's Democratic Governor who's working two jobs at once (the second being the head of DNC) and not being all that good at either. He was willing to take all the money he could get but his legislature turned down thousands for unemployment extensions, without him uttering a peep either before (was he even aware it was brewing?) or after. Perhaps he could sue too, but I doubt he has the time, the energy or the balls.

In the long run, I think it may be better to have one posturing arsehole as the head, and a legislative body which knows which side their bread is buttered and which can override the arsehole's veto, than the other way a round...

But they are alienating their own state party members.
And they are probably not making the businesses that might expect to get a part of that money very happy either.

Republicanites know what they're doing, oh yeah!

Build a substandard highway in IN, but don't worry, it wont be any less expensive as the cost savings will end up in some numbered offshre account anyway. And in 7-10 years, the whole thing will have to be redone, anyway. Yippee! Double the profits.

Can't have building codes in AK, howdy doody! Who cares if homeowners send most of their heating budgets through the walls, windows and ceilings? Thats their lookout, eh?

Too stupid to live but not to profit.
