WEDNESDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* North Korea's government believes it is no longer bound by the 1953 armistice that halted the Korean War. It also threatened "a powerful military strike," apparently against South Korea, if any of its trade ships are stopped for inspection.

* In Pakistan, "suicide attackers spraying gunfire rammed a carload of explosives into a building housing an ambulance service" today, killing at least 23 and wounding nearly 300.

* A bomb exploded on a western Baghdad street today, killing an American soldier and four Iraqi civilians. The death toll for American troops in Iraq this month (20) is the highest since last September.

* Cyclone Aila in eastern India and Bangladesh has killed at least 191 people.

* Given the ugly nature of the attacks, I wonder if Republican Party leaders realize the kind of damage its base and allies are doing.

* Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said this morning that Judge Sotomayor "has serious problems," though he was unclear as to what those problems were. He added, however, "I don't sense a filibuster in the works."

* Also taking the wind from the right-wing sails, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), a member of the Judiciary Committee, told C-SPAN this morning that Sotomayor will be confirmed.

* Two new ads are reaching television sets, one supporting Sotomayor's nomination, and one opposing.

* The RNC has pulled its shameful "Pussy Galore" parody.

* Competing national polls have offered a variety of results, but the latest Gallup poll shows a majority of Americans opposing marriage equality.

* What's Ted Olson up to, and what's his role in trying to overturn California's Prop. 8?

* It still amuses me to think Bush/Cheney wanted Bernie Kerik, who was indicted yesterday for lying to the White House during his vetting, to be the Secretary of Homeland Security.

* Christopher Nelson, a long-time Asia policy expert and author of the Nelson Report, tackles the five basic questions about what's going on with North Korea.

* Funny thing about conservative opposition to gay marriage -- even far-right lawmakers have a hard time explaining what's wrong with it.

* And finally, Glenn Beck offers up the mixed-metaphor Quote of the Day: "Right now, it's the bottom of the ninth and we are down to our last out and our last strike. Will our government take strike three looking? Or, will they wake up and save the day with a heroic three pointer on a penalty shot?"

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

"Will our government take strike three looking? Or, will they wake up and save the day with a heroic three pointer on a penalty shot?" -- Glenn Beck

Well, Republicans' willingness to change the rules without notice have caused several folks here to accuse them of playing "Calvinball".

I saw the Ted Olson thing on CNN Ticker earlier and about fainted.

1) His desire to have one last game changing Supreme Court case outweighs his conservative principles or

2) He realizes the combination of the political landscape and his age means he is out of chances for a Supreme Court appointment or other high office or

both.

And there really is nothing I can add to the Beck quote.

To hell with that three-pointer shit

I think they should try out-braking them at the hairpin. That'd be crazy.

The only thing more ridiculous than hearing college flunk-out Rush Limbaugh call Sotomayor "stupid" is hearing some of the most venomous race-baiters in the country call her racist.

Hey, Steve, I cannot believe you missed hyping that >there has been a second Chicago-area swine flu death putting the total US deaths to at least 13. Oh Noes!

But, congrats on referencing NKor *twice* without using the words "child", "tantrum", or "attention". Nice to see a little elevation in the discourse.

Glenn Beck's more confused than a baby in a topless bar.

I can't help thinking that Olson wants to get the case before the Supremes so there will be a definitive ruling by the Court upholding bans on same-sex marriage. As the Court is currently constituted, that seems like better than even odds. With the precedent in place, it will be much harder to overturn bans for at least a generation. But if that is Olson's game, Boies' motivation is the real mystery.

Thanks for that link, Obama / Steelers / etc. I hadn't seen some of them, since they date back to before I discovered the show. Some classic clips of Stephen Colbert there.

Here's a clickable link for everyone else.

The interview with Christopher Nelson which Benen links to is pretty good, and is a nice, sober antidote to all the reckless anti-NKor crap being spewed by the pseudo-progressive noise machine.

However, Nelson elides one very important point -- the role that US brinkmanship has played in NKor withdrawing from the armistice. NKor has repeatedly warned that SKor joining the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) would invalidate the armistice, and yet after the second test, SKor, under US pressure, joined the PSI (contrary to SKor's interests, as Nelson indicates), and NKor unsurprisingly voided the armistice. That escalation could have been easily avoided.

One point that Nelson is spot on is that the greatest risk right now comes from unintentional actions that rapidly escalate. The best way to avoid that is to keep a cool head. Toward that end, dispensing with all the name calling, macho posturing, and saber rattling is indicated.

"Anything to add?"

Yes.

I see the lying whores over at the 'National Association of Realtors' are at it AGAIN, feeding the clueless media the LIE that April Existing Home Sales rose by 2.9%, and claiming that is evidence that the housing market has "bottomed", when in reality Existing Home Sales actually FELL 3.5% in April from April of 2007.

The proper comparison of home sales is to the same month from the previous year, not from one month to the previous, because of seasonal factors.

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said this morning that Judge Sotomayor "has serious problems," though he was unclear as to what those problems were.

Aw, that's easy. She wasn't appointed by a Republican.

"She wasn't appointed by a Republican."

Oh yes she was. George H. W. Bush.

Sotomayor is not married and has no children. After the Republicans get tired of calling her a racist and stupid, expect them to call her a lesbian.

Good grief... Maybe it's time we should really start thinking about closing those two effing wars, when the number of suicides exceeds the number of killed by enemy action...

Beck's still reeling from the election, when America flogged a dead horse of a different color in midstream. To water. Without making it drink.

"Given the ugly nature of the attacks, I wonder if Republican Party leaders realize the kind of damage its base and allies are doing".

Jeezus. Do you honestly believe there is a difference between any of them?

I dare you to name a single, upright "Republican Party leader" (capital R&P, no less) who can be righteously culled from that herd.

You cannot do it.

Prove me wrong, with an explanation as to what qualities you apparently so admire in that individual. I double dog dare you.

And the really good news is that Joe Sestak has just put a thumb in the eye of the DC Villagers and their "Can't we all just get along" sellout "leader", Barack Obama. He's going to give that mini-putz Rahm Emmanuel the punch in the nose that scumsucking PoS has been looking for all his life.

Snarlin' Arlen is going down! Should be a website soon where you can contribute your donation to reminding Obama that he wasn't elected to bend over and spread for the scum he bends over and spreads for.

Oh yes she was. George H. W. Bush.

And sure, they voted for her then, but now that a Democrat appoints her to SCOTUS, forget it.

(If memory serves her right, Bush appointed her but she was recommended by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who together with the Republican judiciary committee leader at the time was, let's say, a lot more active with the "advice" part of "advice and consent.")
