LEAVE IT TO LIDDY.... And here I thought Tom Tancredo, Newt Gingrich, and Rush Limbaugh would be the most offensive conservative critics of Sonia Sotomayor. How could I forget this clown?

Yesterday on his radio show, conservative host G. Gordon Liddy continued the right wing's all-out assault on Judge Sonia Sotomayor. [...]

"I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, 'the race.' And that should not surprise anyone because she's already on record with a number of racist comments." [...]

"Let's hope that the key conferences aren't when she's menstruating or something, or just before she's going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then."

So, according to this prominent conservative media personality, the Spanish language is synonymous with "illegal alien," and women are, by nature, poorly suited to serving as justices.

I'm not sure what I expected, exactly, from the right during this confirmation process. It was easy to imagine them attacking Sotomayor, but I more or less assumed they'd be subtle. The racist and misogynistic attitudes would be there, I assumed, but they would be vague, indirect, and phrased in a way to make deniability plausible.

But here we are, just a few days after Sotomayor's introduction, and some corners of the right just can't seem to help themselves. They know it's hateful, they know it's offensive, they even know it's likely to do long-term damage to their party.

And yet, they do it anyway. It's like a sickness.

Mr. Liddy apparently had too many character building exercises involving a baseball bat upside his head.

I guess G. Gordon Liddy doesn't associate much with females: at her age, it's not likely Judge Sotomayor still has such a problem.

"So, according to this prominent conservative media personality,..."

Yeah, but the Left is just as bad!!!1!1!! There was some commenter on a blog about a Kos diary who wrote something mean once. And there was some guy with a sign that also stated something not complimentary about Dick Cheney. Don't you see the equivalence?!?!?!

Posted by: RightWing Moron on May 29, 2009 at 3:40 PM | PERMALINK

I've lived all my 60+ years in California and have always understood La Raza, in the context of the National Coalition of La Raza, to mean "The People" not "The Race". You can pretty much identify the racists by their position on this question.

Posted by: JLW on May 29, 2009 at 3:41 PM | PERMALINK

Well based on G. Gordon Liddy's past actions, I'm mostly surprised that he didn't advocate kidnapping and/or killing Sotomayer.

Unspeakably despicable.

Limbaugh, Liddy and even Newt Gingrich don't care about the Republican Party. They care about money. Specifically, they care about getting as much money as they can. And there is a lot of money to be made peddling racism, sexism and hate.

So now Steve is trolling the G. Gordon Liddy radio show for comments. Way to keep your readership informed about world events with cutting edge commentary Steve!

Here, Gordy, have a cigarette. I dare you to stick it in your eye.

Posted by: Danp on May 29, 2009 at 3:49 PM | PERMALINK

Is this the G. Gordon Liddy who advocated shooting federal agents in the head since they often wear vests? That one?

The right wing's total lack of security in their own manhood is sort of dazzling. How big a loser do you have to be to be so fearful of women? or gay people? of people who are not just like you?

Posted by: Artemesia on May 29, 2009 at 3:49 PM | PERMALINK

Given that the average age span for menstruation cessation is between 45 and 55, Liddy's fear is likely as unfounded and ignorant as it is revolting and sexist.

This whole thing by the wingnuts is starting to sound an awful lot like a locker room gripe session. Junior high locker room. Whites only school.

What is this 1909, 1809?

I know some of the is likely PR related (though I may be a tad too generous) but sometimes that can go to far.

Posted by: ET on May 29, 2009 at 3:54 PM | PERMALINK

Franklin @ 3:42, don't go there. This is, after all, the same psycho who advocated going after ATF with head shots. As if further evidence was necessary, Liddy is the definitive argument against taxpayer subsidy of parochial school "education".

Apparently grinning cat is forced to read this blog, despite consistently finding it inadequate, which is why the rest of us should ignore the incessant backseat blogging and belligerent blathering about what Steve should be writing about.

Please remember, no matter how annoying grinning cat's bitchy caterwauling becomes, resist the urge to point it out, because again, grinning cat is being forced to read this blog.

Now back to your regularly scheduled on topic comments.

i can only hope that somewhere in the WH or DNC HQ there are enthusiastic all-night meetings taking place as to how and when to most effectively use this stuff in a concerted way to drive any remaining moderate or educated or suburban, or female or minority or business-based Republicans as far from the party as they can get. If we cant make serious gold out of this, I'm not sure what it would take.

Wasn't there a madness that swept through France in the 15th Century? Traced hundreds of years later to fungus-tainted wheat made into bread?

Maybe there really is something to the comment about republicans "drinking the Kool-Aide"?

Posted by: Mike on May 29, 2009 at 3:58 PM | PERMALINK

The far reaches of the right wing have just gone round the bend. After all, they've had to adjust to a black man in the White House for four whole months and now they are supposed to accept a Latina on the Supreme Court? I haven't seen tantrums like this since my boys were toddlers. Only there is no grown up in charge of these out of control racists. Again, Obama stands back and lets it ride.

Bring on the hearings and Sotomeyor vs. Sessions, Graham and Hatch.

Grinning Cat - I think your problem is that you think this is a news blog. It's not. It's a political blog, hence the name "Political Animal." And that means we discuss politics, ie, the whole Republican-Democrat thing; with a focus on what the dreaded Republicans are doing. While policy and news is also discussed, the focus remains on politics.

And as others have said, nobody's making you read. And if you want to go elsewhere to read policy and news, there are plenty of blogs available for that. But as I'm sure you've noticed, all the popular blogs are political, and that's because that's the stuff most of us want to read. Heck, when I want news, I don't visit blogs at all, I read the news. I come here for the politics and the few posts I don't like, I don't read.

As a longtime male, I suggest that others of the masculine persuasion NOT go down the PMS road.

Not when the Little Man down below so frequently makes life changing decisions for us- often with disasterous consequences. . .

This is especially true for Aged Supreme Males. I seem to remember a woman, well endowed in the mammary department, coming before them not too long ago. I can only imagine the trouser adjustments that were made beneath the robes. . .

So, the GOPers are ganging up on Sotomayor to regain some cred with their base. If you think about it, they never really went after Obama because of his race - not the top dogs. They went after his "socialism," "marxism," "al Qaedaism,"community serviceism" - but never his "the sheriff is a negroism."

Now they are compensating, by dousing Sotomayor with their very special brand of venomous hate.

Real men, these guys. Cowards one and all.

Didn't Gingrich once say something along the lines that women shouldn't be subject to active military duty because there are trenches on the battlefield and their private parts might get wet?

Between Gingrich and Liddy's statements, I detect a larger pattern of stupid.

Just this morning, I said to mr. third baseman, "Why are Hispanics getting all the love from the GOP? What about women? Is there no room in this scenario for good old-fashioned skirt-baiting?"

Fortunately, Liddy sees the bigger picture here. At the rate we'd been going, women were fleeing the GOP at a slightly slower rate than the last few Latinos were running out the door. Now we're getting that rectified. Chop chop, ladies.

So, according to this clinically insane ex-convict...

Fixed.

Limbaugh, Liddy and even Newt Gingrich don't care about the Republican Party. They care about money. Specifically, they care about getting as much money as they can. And there is a lot of money to be made peddling racism, sexism and hate.

I don't know why this point isn't more strongly emphasized. It's not just the Republican Party they don't give a shit about, they couldn't care less about America, either. They care about their bank accounts. Permanent deregulation of the private sector is their only core principle, their only deeply-held conviction, and their only real goal. The party is useful to them only as the vehicle to obtain that goal.

When did menstruation ever stop a woman from doing what she needed to do?

Telling these bozos that the nominee is post menopausal is still playing into their rant. It is not a factor. Not a factor at all.

Should we start a round of Viagra jokes? Or enlarged prostate jokes and how that impacts urination patterns?

Posted by: jen f on May 29, 2009 at 4:27 PM | PERMALINK

She's 54. Does Liddy really think she menstruates?

Most common age range for menopause in the U.S. is 48-55. Clearly, some Republican senator is going to have to cut to the chase in the confirmation hearing and ask her if she still bleeds.

Oh, like they wouldn't do it?

Posted by: shortstop on May 29, 2009 at 4:30 PM | PERMALINK

Hey - its a two-fer with Sotomayer. They get to bash a Hispanic and they get to bash a women. What could make the white old men happier! A Hispanic woman! They must be in their glory right now - all their wet dreams have finally come true.

Clinically insane ex-convict/prominent conservative media personality. Both are acceptable answers in this case. In general, it's a distinction without a difference.

Liddy was also sympathizing with those who resist government agents by force, note again per his advice about head shots etc to ATF agents? How ironic, for "patriots" who hated criticism of government action and officials those righties were in charge.

Posted by: N e i l B ☼ on May 29, 2009 at 4:51 PM | PERMALINK

I can't work up any outrage about Liddy's comment about menstruation because it's so incredibly and pathetically juvenile. I can just see him stifling giggles in his studio, nudging somebody with his elbow, just like a 13-yr-old boy in a 1970 gym class would have done. I bet the term "the curse" just sends him into gales of helpless laughter. He's 79, so it's possible he's suffering from what we used to call senility.

Just to remind people, here's what Liddy said just after W's "Mission Accomplished" appearance:

"And here comes George Bush. You know, he's in his flight suit, he's striding across the deck, and he's wearing his parachute harness, you know --- and I've worn those because I parachute --- and it makes the best of his manly characteristic.... He has just won every woman's vote in the United States of America. You know, all those women who say size doesn't count --- they're all liars. Check that out."

John Cornyn may not like it, but Liddy, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Savage, O'Reilly, and Beck are the face—and mouth—of today's GOP. The elected politicians are irrelevant to the base for the most part.

Liddy has a radio show?? What's it called, Air Mars?

Posted by: ckelly on May 29, 2009 at 4:56 PM | PERMALINK

I thought Liddy died some years ago. I thought I remember feeling relieved upon hearing of his demise, more comfortable that his militias didn't have a flame to feed their bigotry and rebellion. It sends chills down my back when I remember that these people were in charge of this country for the last 8-15 years.

Posted by: CDW on May 29, 2009 at 5:05 PM | PERMALINK

Hey guys. Get a clue. A woman is no more or less rational than a man, no matter the time of month, no matter if she's pre or post menopause. I've seen plenty of men behave "emotionally" in the workplace - and I'm an engineer. So please stop with the comments about Sotomayor's age and menopausal status. They are no more relevant than Liddy's comments.

Posted by: lisagoak on May 29, 2009 at 5:24 PM | PERMALINK

For those of you who like to think that the GOP used to be better than it is today, bear in mind that during the Nixon administration this same Liddy character was a White House employee.

In other words, they've always had crazies on board.

Posted by: jimBOB on May 29, 2009 at 5:26 PM | PERMALINK

A woman is no more or less rational than a man, no matter the time of month, no matter if she's pre or post menopause.

My long held belief is that if you eliminated men from every position of political leadership in the world, there would be less wars, less crap, just in fact, a better world.

Pity we can't just snap our fingers and give it a whirl.

Posted by: e henry thripshaw on May 29, 2009 at 5:38 PM | PERMALINK

Menstruating? She was born in 1954. Hasn't Liddy ever heard of menopause, or as they say in "illegal alien," el cambio de vida? Well, I doubt Mr. Liddy knows much about women, not after seeing how he got all hot and sweaty looking at George Bush in his flight suit.

Posted by: T-Rex on May 29, 2009 at 5:40 PM | PERMALINK

Some might say that G. Gordon Liddy, like Oliver North, is more than a "Conservative". He's a traitor.

Posted by: Squeaky McCrinkle on May 29, 2009 at 6:03 PM | PERMALINK

Does anyone know what Liddy's reaction was to Karl Rove's being a featured speaker at National Council of La Raza?

Posted by: PG on May 29, 2009 at 6:06 PM | PERMALINK

But he still proves she is at least a better choice than someone like him would be, three times over.

Having a period does not disqualify women from any activity the want to engage in. The empirical evidence is overwhelmingly proof of that.
Libby is a sexist.

Libby is ignorant.

Libby is a racist.

So if Sotomayor is only a racists she's a better man than Libby is.

I think Gordon Liddy doesn't know much about menstruating, either. At 54, Ms. Sotomayor is probably no longer menstruating, but if she IS, she's probably in menopause or peri-menopause.

If men think PMS is something to look out for, they're going to LOVE menopause.

Don't pick on Liddy. When Liddy was told to do the crime, he did it and he did the time. Not like these cowards who were brave enough to torture helpless captives but now they're afraid to go to court for it.
