PLAYING GROWN-UP.... The Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan today referred to some of Sonia Sotomayor's far-right critics as "idiots." She went on to offer her party some reasonable advice.

"Let's play grown-up." When I was a child, that's what we said when we ran out of things to do like playing potsie or throwing rocks in the vacant lot. You'd go in and take your father's hat and your mother's purse and walk around saying, "Would you like tea?" In retrospect we weren't imitating our parents but parents on TV, who wore pearls and suits. But the point is we amused ourselves trying to be little adults.

And that's what the GOP should do right now: play grown-up.

I'm trying to decide which part of this is more interesting: Noonan's assumption that Republican Party would have to pretend to be grown-up, or that Noonan thinks there's still time for the GOP to, as John Cole put it, "dial back the crazy" on the Sotomayor nomination.

I'll wait for the DNA results to come back before deciding if that was really Peggy Noonan or an alien doppelganger.

I mean, really. She basically called the pearl-clutching, tantrum-throwing outrageomatics that make up the entire public face of the Republican party sobbing children who should grow the heck up and at least pretend to be potty trained.

Who would ever have seen that coming?

Peggy serves Peggy. Behind her admonishment is that smug air of slightly weary superiority she sports at all times. Apparently she's given up lecturing liberals and is now going for the role of most reasonable member of the GOP. Given some of the things that have come out of her mouth over the years, it's fairly entertaining that it's come to this.

Metaphor of the day: Noonan writes that nominating Sotomayor poses a wicked choice for Republicans who reflexively want to attack any Obama move: "Politically she's like a beautiful doll containing a canister of poison gas: Break her and you die."

I for one would love to see the Republicans act like grown ups. Maybe one day they will actually become sentient adults.

But as someone else pointed out on an earlier thread, these hysterics are about making money, not about the party or governance. Noonan's admonishments are as much about making money as Rush's temper tantrums are.

No, the GOP needs to die and be buried.

We desperately need a two party system with serious minded people. Opposition is supposed to serve a purpose - a purpose other than obstruction.

Agree that these histrionics are all about fund raising rather than any sane or effective manuver to block Sotomayor. But making money is what being a republican is all about nowadays. Whether it's "I got mine, to hell with the country" or "I got mine, to hell with the GOP", it's all the same to them...as long as they got theirs.

The Darwin Award people need to create a category for political parties. We're watching evolution in action, and the GOP is like the numbskulls who off themselves in spectacularly dumb ways. Of course, since GOPers don't believe in evolution, they're clueless right to the end.

Noonan, being a real pragmatist, is reminding her base that a rabid dog is summarily put down for the benefit and safety of the entire community. I think Peggy is beginning to see the foaming at the mouth! -Kevo

The most interesting part of PN's comment that she used to play "potsie".

A call to NO arms? Hmmm.

I guess she's saying the Right-wing's attacks just aren't cricket. More sugar please.
