WHO IS 'EVERYBODY ELSE'?.... Manuel Miranda, despite his controversial past, is apparently helping lead a coalition of conservatives against Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court nomination. He spoke to a group of conservative bloggers this afternoon at the Heritage Foundation, and explained how the right could go after the judge without alienating Hispanic voters. David Weigel reported this observation from Miranda's remarks:

"Hispanic polls, Hispanic surveys, indicate that Hispanics think just like everyone else. We're not like African-Americans. We think just like everybody else. When I was on the leader's staff, someone called me once and asked me: 'What's Senator Frist's Hispanic agenda?' I said, 'low taxes, better education, more jobs ... what are you talking about?' And that's how Hispanics are. This is an opportunity to educate them on all of our issues and they will resonate in the way that they resonate with everyone else."

I had the same reaction Adam Serwer did: "What does it mean that Latinos are 'not like African-Americans' because they 'think like everyone else'? I'm interested to hear Miranda's explanation of the cognitive differences between black people and the rest of America."

I guess Manuel saw Marcus Epstein's game and decided he had to keep up. Nobody beats Republicans when it comes to bringing teh stupid.

Dear God,

Is there one day that goes by wherein one of these morons (or some other poor substitute) does not publicly hang themselves with their discourse?

Well, you know how African-Americans are always protesting for higher taxes, worse education, and fewer jobs and all.

-There you go again (where have I heard that before?), Steve. Stirring the pot, asking embarrassing questions. Why can't just all get along. . .

Posted by: DAY on June 2, 2009 at 3:41 PM | PERMALINK

Maybe Miranda thinks that the way into some Latino hearts is to try to stir up black/brown resentment and conflict. After all, wedge issues are the Republican area of expertise.

Manuel must be feeling fully assimilated, into the KKK that is.

"We're not like African-Americans. We think just like everybody else."
I'm gagging on the cognitive dissonance here. And this guy is part of "Sotomayor's a racist" crowd??? We're supposed to understand exactly... what, here? That "everybody" = white folks?
[bangs head against wall...]
...just speechless at the cluelessness...

"I'm interested to hear Miranda's explanation of the cognitive differences between black people and the rest of America."

Maybe you should ask Judge Sotomayor instead since she expressly believes that race and ethnicity causes differences in the thinking and reasoning abilities of people.

At least, with respect to judging as evidenced by her speech that Obama himself said that she used a "poor choice of words". LOL

Social conservatives only understand what they see in the mirror.

Posted by: alan on June 2, 2009 at 3:51 PM | PERMALINK

I hope he never hears that question. He's heading right for the train wreck with his line of reasoning... God speed!

Posted by: beans on June 2, 2009 at 3:52 PM | PERMALINK

What's so confusing? Miranda's whole life as a conservative has been an unending protest he's really, really, really just like a white guy.

This is just more of the same.

Posted by: JM on June 2, 2009 at 3:53 PM | PERMALINK

Well, duh. Everyone knows black folks only think about rims, fried chicken, and Beyonce's ass.

Note to Manuel - Have you ever heard of the Miranda Warning?

Posted by: Danp on June 2, 2009 at 3:56 PM | PERMALINK

Now THAT's comedy gold right there. I wonder how he'll extricate that big old foot of his from his mouth?

Posted by: Doctor Whom on June 2, 2009 at 3:58 PM | PERMALINK

Chicon a poor choice of words does not a racist make. But in your case a constant commentary reflecting your basic misunderstanding of reality does make for a title of"douche bag".

Posted by: Gandalf on June 2, 2009 at 3:58 PM | PERMALINK

Well if their message resonates with latinos like it resonates with everyone else, maybe up to 21% of latinos could call themselves republicans one day.

Their message doesn't resonate with everyone else.

I guess this belongs with those observations that Obama isn't as popular as one might think, because African Americans are included in those polled.

Posted by: J on June 2, 2009 at 4:04 PM | PERMALINK

The truth hurts. Afro Americans don't think like everybody else. However neither do Hispanish people.

I think this guy is wrong to argue that Spanics are just like normal Americans but if his statement makes libs' heads explode I can live with it.

No, she doesn't, but you know that.

Jackass.

Chicounsel's poor rhetorical skills demonstrate that, whatever he spent to get the law degree out of the gumball machine, he overspent.

Posted by: DJ on June 2, 2009 at 4:13 PM | PERMALINK

Do these people hear themselves? They say crap like that and then have the nerve to call Sotomayor a racist? Sweet Jesus!

Should I be suprised that Miranda called filibustering of judicial nominees "unconstitutional" when the D's were in the minority, but now is pushing the R's to filibuster Sotomayor's nomination? Hypocritical prick.

Posted by: GiggsisGod on June 2, 2009 at 4:15 PM | PERMALINK

Yes, poor enough that it's easy to twist a statement about experiencing prejudice into a state OF prejudice.

But you know that's not true. You're just ambulatory feces.

Posted by: JM on June 2, 2009 at 4:15 PM | PERMALINK

By the way I do NOT think like Manuel Miranda, Pat Buchannan, some imaginary grouping of african-americans, or "everyone else," I think like me.

So bye bye Mr. Maranda guy

This all sounds like a bad Mencia bit. "See, a black guy calls his senator like this...."

Posted by: Royko on June 2, 2009 at 4:21 PM | PERMALINK
This all sounds like a bad Mencia bit.

I protest that statement! All Mencia bits are bad, so using that qualifier is just redundant.

;-)

On topic: The GOP really has just stopped even trying to hide its disdain for non-whites, hasn't it?

I guess since all their dog whistles are no longer working -- phrases like "states rights!" and "affirmative action" and all the other terms that slip by most, but that resonate with the bigot community -- they've decided to be less subtle.

I sssooo hope they continue this tactic. Between this clown and the guy who called some woman the "n word" while giving her a karate chop to the melon, they should have the unyielding support of about 10% of America wrapped up by 2010.

Which is kinda sad, since we need at least two functioning parties in this country. I wonder who will take their place ...

Posted by: Mark D on June 2, 2009 at 4:35 PM | PERMALINK

Oh yeah... This qualifies...

Manuel, You are definitely a racist. Or is that a reverse racist. i just can't keep it straight these days.

"Afro Americans don't think like everybody else. However neither do Hispanish people."

Y'know, Myke, my wife of 30 wonderful years is Mexican-American, and my daughter obviously is partially of Hispanic descent, so my first impulse was to respond to your comment in some angry manner. Then I realized that it would be a waste of time, because people like you simply don't matter in either the short or the long run, other than as an something nasty on the sidewalk to step around.

Posted by: bluestatedon on June 2, 2009 at 5:04 PM | PERMALINK

Mencia was decent back in the 90's, he's just shit now that he ran out of material.

He used to have an act about how blacks and hispanics were, essentially, in the same bout when it came to America. Now he does the mexican version of a 'black folks do this, white guys do that' routine. It's a fucking pity.

Posted by: soullite on June 2, 2009 at 5:25 PM | PERMALINK

Hey, bluestatedon, your spoof meter must be broken.
Myke K is a spoof of the original troll named Mike K (who was, quite possibly, a spoof as well). No big deal, just thought you ought to know. It's like inside baseball for political blog reading, all of which pretty much makes me want to go cry a little right now. KTHXBYE.

"Myke K is a spoof of the original troll named Mike K"

Did not know that; I've been seeing "Myke" comment a good bit over the last few weeks and this is the first time somebody clued me and other responders in.

Of course, even if "Myke K" doesn't really exist, the GOP would have to invent him.

Posted by: bluestatedon on June 2, 2009 at 6:03 PM | PERMALINK

Yes, it's quite shocking to find that wingnut Hispanics are as racist as wingnut Anglos....

Posted by: Disputo on June 2, 2009 at 6:41 PM | PERMALINK

Yawn. Wake me when you have something I don't already know and understand better than any of you could ever hope to.
