NO APOLOGIES.... It's the kind of analysis that's so blisteringly stupid, it's still hard to believe it's coming from a major news outlet. Fox News' Steve Doocy told viewers this morning that "some" are referring to the president's visit to the Middle East "as President Obama's Muslim apology tour."

Who are these "some"? Doocy didn't say. If pressed, the Fox News personality would probably have to point to the frequent references to an "apology tour" on his own standards-free network.

Whether it was a conscious decision or not, President Obama acknowledged the tension between the United States and much of the Middle East, but he apologized for nothing, leaving Fox News and the RNC with precious little to work with.

"[J]ust as America can never tolerate violence by extremists, we must never alter our principles. 9/11 was an enormous trauma to our country. The fear and anger that it provoked was understandable, but in some cases, it led us to act contrary to our ideals. We are taking concrete actions to change course. I have unequivocally prohibited the use of torture by the United States, and I have ordered the prison at Guantanamo Bay closed by early next year.

"So America will defend itself respectful of the sovereignty of nations and the rule of law. And we will do so in partnership with Muslim communities which are also threatened. The sooner the extremists are isolated and unwelcome in Muslim communities, the sooner we will all be safer."

As Spencer Ackerman summarized, "Not a word of apology. On Afghanistan, he said 'despite the costs involved, America's commitment will not weaken. Indeed, none of us should tolerate these extremists.' He looked squarely at the conspiracy theories about 9/11 in the Muslim world and called them the garbage that they are. 'Al Qaeda chose to ruthlessly murder these people, claimed credit for the attack, and even now states their determination to kill on a massive scale. ... These are not opinions to be debated; these are facts to be dealt with.'"

I don't doubt that those who hope to discredit the White House will come up with something negative to obsess over, but after going through the speech a couple of times, I'm not sure what it'll be. His quoting the Koran? His expression of goodwill through "assalaamu alaykum"?

More and more, I get the sense that these people are just talking to each other and nobody else is listening.

They don't need much - how about the fact that he's breathing.

Or maybe he actually put spicy mustard on a sandwich while overseas.

His statement that America was among the larger Muslim nations was quite a gaffe, or at least taken well out of context. Even using the very highest estimates for the U.S. Muslim population, of about six million (other estimates are half that much), the United States wouldn't even be in the top 20.

I agree with Lee: quarantine, not confront. I can't help what stupid people think and what their stupid handlers are willing to push; it's like trying to put out a forest fire with a spray bottle.

Oh Steve, ye of little faith. Believe me, the deranged Right Wing nutters will find lots that are wrong with the speech.

"Some" people say that Doocy is actually a simpleton who does not understand the words his director makes him say.

Why isn't Steve D. on infomericals that better reflects his "talents"? I hear Sham-Wow is need of a spokesbot.

To the nutters, knowledge of the outside world is itself dangerous and indicative of traitorous impulses. That's why Obama's use of a few Arabic words is so mortifying — it means he acknowledges awareness of something beyond our shores. Real Americans don't need to speak anything other than American. Sure, Bush said a few Arabic words and held hands with Abdullah, but the nutters knew that he was a genuine American because he was utterly content to be ignorant. Too much knowledge means you're a socialism-pushing, Al Queda-loving terrorist who probably wants to destroy the institution of marriage by allowing two guys to tie the knot.

Er, Mr Benen, the FAUX guys and gals are passing on Mitt Romney's speech at the Heritage Foundation on June 1. Mitt awakened that morning with stomach cramps and thought he had discovered a new Talking Point.

Tthe Republicans are unable to recognize intelligence, integrity, leadership and education among other good chaaracteristic traits ; therefore are not qualified for governing.

The Republicans would rather shoot and kill than speak with knowledge and forethought.
The republicans would rather promote stupidity and prefer to repress Americans to just follow without question.

I can see how an anti-Muslim bigot might see Obama's speech as an apology, or at least a denunciation and acknowledgement of bigotry. Is that what Doocey is defending?

Posted by: Danp on June 4, 2009 at 9:45 AM | PERMALINK

From the desk of Steve Doocy:

Because of your inadequate intelligence and education, you are not properly equipped to fully analyze The Chosen One's apology speech in Cairo.

With the assistance of the highly educated staff at Fox News, we have determined the following from his speech.

If you take the 7th word of the 2nd paragraph and the 11th word of the 4th paragraph and the 15th word of the 6th paragraph and the 3rd word of the 7th paragraph and the 27th word of the 8th paragraph and the 2nd word of the 10th paragraph and the 6th word of the 12th paragraph and the 21st word of the 14th paragraph, it clears states:

"I am a Muslim and I hate America"

The 'I've run out of adjectives'-ly stupid complaints from the right about Obama's foreign trips are self-refuting. Do the wingers really think that furriners don't notice that the constant chest-beating is accompanied by ever-more-frantic coverups and ever-more-brutal and indiscriminate warfare on them and their neighbors? Bah.

Posted by: MattF on June 4, 2009 at 9:46 AM | PERMALINK

The last 4+ months have provided ample evidence - if any were needed - that one of the prime characteristics of the right wing commentariat is gross stupidity. Stupidity combined with ignorance and ingrained xenophobia leads to all kinds of bizarre outcomes, such as "apology tour" and William Kristo's calls for bombing Iran.

Oh, one ingredient I forgot to mention: the unspoken assumption that America can do whatever it likes in the world - someone said (paraphrasing), "periodically we have to throw some country up against a wall just to show who's boss".

Amd they wonder why they hate us?

Liz Cheney was on MSNBC again this morning. Take a wild guess what her worthless opinion was.

What about quoting the president as saying that:

"So America will defend...Muslim...extremists...in Muslim communities"?

Sure, you have to use a lot of ellipses, but it's in the passage below:

"So America will defend itself respectful of the sovereignty of nations and the rule of law. And we will do so in partnership with Muslim communities which are also threatened. The sooner the extremists are isolated and unwelcome in Muslim communities, the sooner we will all be safer."

Real Americans don't need to speak anything other than American.

If American was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me.

For those of you who think their bullshit doesn't have an effect, read EJ Dione's column this morning. Nothing has made me more aware of the MSM's right ward bias than the election of Obama. We minimize the impact of the repeated lies from Fox and Morning Joe at our own political peril.

========================

And some are referring to him as Steve Dookie.

So?

Fox News - world's largest echo chamber. Although I hear Romney's engaged in some quality whining about Apology '09.

Those folks, and their name is legion, are a lot like the dogs in my neighborhood. One dog starts barking -- maybe at something, maybe at nothing. Then another dog barks because the first one barked, then all the dogs are barking because some other dog barked, then they're barking just to bark. Then it trails off and stops. Then some dog barks at something, maybe at nothing, then .... SO, I propose calling those folks "The Dogs of the Village."

Posted by: Greg Worley on June 4, 2009 at 9:59 AM | PERMALINK

er,Stefan, I believe some linguists believe Jesus only spoke "American" with a distinctly Southern accent. And, for some reason, Italian painters failed to paint him with coifed hair.

Posted by: berttheclock on June 4, 2009 at 10:17 AM | PERMALINK

I'd say Greg Worley's comment captures a lot of the inner workings in the MSM perfectly.

Including the nuances of its analytical depth.

Scott F: Because obviously reprinting and linking them repeatedly, accompanied with angry denunciations and fiskings, has negatively impacted whatever ignorant business model Fox has implemented. It obviously prevented that EJ Dionne column from being written.

That's because Fox News is not a "major news outlet". It just plays a "major news outlet" on TV.

Fox News is lowbrow pseudo-ideological infotainment for weak-minded, ignorant, mean-spirited Ditto-Heads who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground and are proud of it. They don't watch Fox News to learn facts. They watch Fox News to revel in corporate-sponsored, scripted, focus-group-tested, teleprompted, ritualistic hatred of "liberals".

Let the Village folk carry on with talk of apology, appeasement, and failure. It's all they've got.

Well, that, and the fact that Obama is treating Muslims as if they were actual human beings rather than animals to be slaughtered. That really irks the right wing.

Posted by: Screamin' Demon on June 4, 2009 at 11:04 AM | PERMALINK

Steve, Steve, Steve.

Just because they put "news" in their name, you fall for it and think they are a REAL news outlet, much less a MAJOR news outlet?

Fox News : news :: Mystery Science Theater : science
