FRIDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* AP: "A suicide bomber killed 30 people attending Friday prayers at a mosque, while a roadside bomb left four soldiers dead in Pakistan's tribal belt — the latest violence to rock the country's northwest as the army says it is beating back the Taliban in the Swat Valley."

* It's about time someone finally caught them: "A retired U.S. State Department worker with top secret security clearance and his wife have been indicted on charges of spying for Cuba over the past three decades."

* Good: "While the political debate over the shooting of Dr. George Tiller focused on the speech of abortion opponents, the Department of Justice is launching an investigation into whether anyone else was involved with the shooting [and] investigating for potential violations of the Freedom of Access to Clinics Entrances Act."

* Philip Mudd, under consideration to be the undersecretary of intelligence and analysis at the Department of Homeland Security, has withdrawn from the process. His role in Bush-era interrogation techniques has been at issue.

* Republican obstructionism is delaying yet another Obama administration nominee. This time, it's Robert Groves, the president's choice to lead the U.S. Census Bureau.

* British Prime Minister Gordon Brown isn't having a good week.

* Canada doesn't want our Gitmo detainees.

* When it comes to conservative columnists at the Washington Post, there really ought to be a more stringent fact-checking process.

* The Republican attacks have clearly had an effect: Speaker Pelosi's approval ratings have tanked.

* Ezra notes one of the ironies of the health care debate: "In most cases, individuals arguing that health reform is too expensive are dead-set against policies that would make it cheaper."

* Rick Sanchez seems to enjoy taking on Bill O'Reilly. (A feud would no doubt be good for ratings.)

* Best of luck, Satyam Khanna.

* Libertarians, you're not allowed to make your own money.

* And former Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) explained last night that the key for Republicans in the future is to compete "in the Ethernet." If he says so.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Modest prediction:

The Dr. Tiller assassination will become a snakes' nest of co-conspirators when the Justice Department unravels the links between the killer and the right to life lunatic groups.

IF the Justice department persues this case as vigorously as the former administration went after al Qaeda links in the Muslim community. . .

Pelosi is terrible at standing her ground, and fighting back - which is why her position is being gradually eroded.

I have to say, I'm very disappointed in my government for not taking in the Uighurs, particularly as they're not actually terrorists.

I have no love for Stephen Harper -- he's arguably the most rightwing PM we've had in quite some time -- but I'm still a bit surprised.

Libertarians, you're not allowed to make your own money.
The way the real money supply works undermines the whole free-market illusion of libertarians, so no wonder they want to make their own. The money supply is expanded by monetization of debt, interest rates are manipulated, etc: hence the government steers the economy over and above any direct "regulation" of business choices. That means, there can't be a neutral, natural free market apart from the monetary decisions. The government's decisions affect employment, etc. and are therefore game for counter-adjustment. Furthermore, the expansion of money means that how much people end up with can't be simply determined by their voluntary transactions with each other.

Steve: "Rick Sanchez seems to enjoy taking on Bill O'Reilly. (A feud would no doubt be good for ratings.)"

And of course, he's now up to the task long after Al Franken, Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz, etc., first cleared the path.

Rick Sanchez obviously has what it takes to shoot the wounded -- or run him over and split the scene:

St. Petersburg Times | February 17, 1991
Test: Sanchez Drove Drunk - "A Miami television anchorman has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in a December accident in which police say he left the scene after hitting a man and returned later. Rick Sanchez, anchor for WSVN, was charged Friday with one count of DUI, a first-degree misdemeanor in the Dec. 10 accident outside Joe Robbie Stadium, prosecutor Kathleen Hoague said. If convicted, Sanchez faces a maximum of six months in prison and a $500 fine. A blood test showed Sanchez had a blood-alcohol level that night of .15 percent. A person with a .10 level is considered legally drunk in Florida. The man Sanchez hit was critically injured and remains in a coma at North Shore Hospital. ... After the accident, Sanchez, 32, drove home to retrieve his driver's license and insurance card."

Rick Sanchez eventually pleaded no contest to the DUI charge on November 6, 1991. Since then, he has shown little if any remorse for his conduct in that incident.

The man he hit, Jeffrey Smuzinick, bears no small amount of blame for what happened, since he himself was intoxicated when he stepped into the path of Sanchez's vehicle. Smuzinick became a quadriplegic, and eventually died of his injuries in 1995.

I am almost 50 y/o. I used to love the WaPo, in the 70's and 80's. Now, it is a shadow of it's former self, acting like any other MSM propaganda spewing outlet; right wing crap slides through without a care. It is a sham and a shame. 'THE' paper that at one time OWNED the mantel for integrity and guts in journalism. FSTV, (Democracy Now, GRIT TV), Bill Moyers, LINK TV, the Comedy Channel (how sad to have to say that), Keith & Rachel are what we have left to provide actual journalism, hell bent on the truth, not on promoting an corporate and ideological garbage to feed to the masses. They all deserve our support.

It's not in the Republican best interests to have a new and accurate Census. The later it starts, the better off they are. That is, it's more than just Repubs being Repubs and obstreperous as usual.

While I admit that I've never been a fan of Pelosi, the tanking approval rating does demonstrate that lies repeated over and over become perceived as the truth. Character assassination works.

Posted by: jen f on June 5, 2009 at 8:15 PM | PERMALINK

pelosi has long been an irritation to me -- a lifelong democrat.

i would like nothing better than to see her out of the position of majority leader. if that means she's out of the senate altogether, i won't be crying.

i don't think her tanking numbers are necessarily a reflection of republican snarking being effective but more a result of her apparent willingness to kowtow to a shrinking minority opposition party.

Posted by: karen marie on June 5, 2009 at 8:21 PM | PERMALINK

I second Karen Marie's second paragraph, except I believe she is referring to Harry Reid in the Senate, not Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Go Norm! All politics, and packet routing, is local.

Maybe we should start calling Norm the "LAN Man".

Posted by: tomj on June 5, 2009 at 8:41 PM | PERMALINK

"[Mudd's] role in Bush-era interrogation techniques has been at issue".

"Interrogation techniques"? You mean torture, right? Why not use the word? You bucking for a management job at the NY Times?

And if Emmanuel/Obama (and senators like Levin) weren't so chickenshit, Pelosi's poll numbers might well be in the ascendant. They might have lent their weight to rebut the GOP attacks during the frenzied two weeks when that story led each news cycle, but chose instead to cede the airwaves and watch her twist slowly in the wind. Levin especially- in perversely calculated fashion- waited until the past week to denounce her attackers as liars.

Why anyone with a shred of respect chooses to register Democratic rather than Independent is beyond me.

So I know that some towns have introduced their own currency. Great Barrington MA tried to introduce Berkshares a few years ago, although I don't think it caught on. What's the difference between those currencies and this libertarian one? Is there something they could have done which would have made it legal, like calling it "scrip", or not having a 2-way exchange with the dollar?

bioethanol for everybody

Neat, huh? High ethanol concentration without distillation.

I wonder how much of the product will be sold on the street, and at colleges and universities.

A realtor told me once that San Diego County's number 1 product was horse manure. Maybe not quite, but when horse manure can be used as a feedstock for ethanol, our economy should revive nicely.

The new generation of ethanol-blend-fueled turbocharged direct-injected engines are supposedly going to have fuel economy similar to the diesel-fueled turbocharged direct-injected engines. If that proves to be the case, the value of ethanol in the market should increase.

stay tuned.

The Republican attacks have clearly had an effect: Speaker Pelosi's approval ratings have tanked.

Nah, it's just that people are learning more about her, and she isn't very good. And her alliance with John Murtha works against her as his pork projects get more scrutiny.

According to the same news source that you cited,

The Democratic attacks have clearly had an effect: former VP Cheney's approval ratings have tanked.

Or, perhaps, half of Americans just think he didn't do a good job.

Now the DoJ's launching an investigation into the Tiller assassination. They're just trying to make the sheeple forget that their enforcement arm (that would be the FBI) was asleep at the wheel when it mattered. Guess the Feebs were too busy infiltrating Quaker and Audubon meetings to pay much attention to homegrown terrorism.

Libertarians, you're not allowed to make your own money.

Sure we are! How else are we gonna pay for screwing whores, smoking weed, and running a business? All we need is free government services that no one pays any taxes for, and we are good to go baby.

Assuming it's not an obvious attempt at counterfeiting, why should it be illegal to trade with homemade currency? Why can't me and my friends exchange hand-written IOUs for goods and services without being a class of criminals?

Sure, extreme libertarianism is ridiculous, but this just seems like a reasonable liberty for a free country.

Trading IOUs is legal; that's simple barter.

What these guys are doing is different -- they're trying to pass off their coins as legal tender. They've been charged with counterfeiting and fraud. The whole operation looks like an obvious scam. I'm surprised the the feds didn't shut down these folks yrs ago.

D-Day Commemoration

Today, our esteemed president, fresh from his historic speech in Cairo, will join other leaders in the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the World War II landing on the beaches of Normandy. It was a bloody day as the allied forces began the campaign to defeat Hitler on the continent of Europe. Many died, many fought with unparalleled bravery.

I applaud the principles and actions of President Obama and have always thought that he may well be one of our greatest presidents. But he has certainly been less than great in his failure to end the discriminatory and demeaning "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military, as he had promised in his campaign. If Harry Truman could show the fortitude to end the much larger problem of segregation in the military, surely Obama could end this senseless policy. The change is slight by comparison, since many gays are serving successfully every day while being forced to hide or lie about their nature. Meanwhile, on Obama's watch, the services are losing Arabic speakers and other valuable people.

PULEEEEEZE...I'm no lover of wingnut REPUGS but to think they alone are responsible for the "tanking" of Pelosi's approval ratings is absurd...neither she nor Reid well represent their constituents OR our country...let alone the Democratic party...its sad that someone as intelligent, articulate and pragmatic as Obama has these two to rely on to advance his agenda...the ONLY good thing about BUSH AND COMPANY was the fact that they got things done...they weren't necessarily GOOD THINGS but they worked together...now if Dems could figure out how to use their liberal creds to listen, learn, and produce coupled with some ability to hang together we might get somewhere in this country...someplace we'd all agree was a POSITIVE PLACE TO BE!!!!! But I'm getting to old to believe that can happen...
