WHAT IS CHUCK GRASSLEY TALKING ABOUT?.... In his weekly address, President Obama said it's "time to deliver" health care reform to the nation. It didn't seem like an especially controversial thing to say -- deliberations are underway, and the president was signaling his intention not to let the opportunity slip away.
For reasons that make no sense at all, one prominent Republican senator found Obama's comments about his commitment to reform deeply insulting.
That didn't sit well with the Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Finance Committee, which has been laboring to come up with a health care bill that Democrats and Republicans can support.
Grassley is a frequent user of Twitter ... and he directed two angry "tweets" Sunday morning at Obama. The president was wrapping up an overseas trip with some time in Paris with his family.
Grassley's first tweet: "Pres Obama you got nerve while u sightseeing in Paris to tell us 'time to deliver' on health care. We still on skedul/even workinWKEND."
A short time later: "Pres Obama while u sightseeing in Paris u said 'time to delivr on healthcare' When you are a 'hammer' u think evrything is NAIL I'm no NAIL."
When I first heard about the tweets, I'd assumed an overeager Grassley intern had gotten ahold on the senator's Blackberry and typed a couple of ridiculous messages without Grassley's knowledge. Alas, the senator's office later confirmed to the AP that Grassley actually tweeted these messages himself.
Have I mentioned that Grassley is the leading Republican senator working with Senate Democrats on a bipartisan reform package?
Reading his angry messages, I'm still not sure what it is the Iowa Republican is so upset about. That the First Family is "sightseeing in Paris," which he mentioned twice? That the president wants to see a bill passed this year? That Grassley doesn't want to be a "nail"?
Indeed, the Maslow's hammer axiom doesn't apply here at all. In this metaphor, what is it, exactly, that Grassley thinks is the hammer? Why does he feel like a nail?
If a general "it's time to deliver" message from the president is enough to send the leading Republican negotiator into sputtering and incoherent Twitter rage, we can probably rule out the prospects of some kind of bipartisan compromise. Grassley is apparently so touchy, who knows what'll happen if, God forbid, Obama says something about "rolling up our sleeves" or "getting down to business."

He must have taken it to mean, that the committee should deliver a plan right this very minute. He believed he was being called on the carpet for not "delivering" a healthcare proposal fast enough. It's the only thing that makes any sense, it seems to me.

No one accused him of being that sharp.

imagine if Obama had said "git r done." Grassley's head would've exploded. "He's bossing me around, but using the catchphrase of my constituent's favorite comedian-philosopher! How can I reject his message without disparaging our 2wst century sage? Does not compute! DOES NOT COMPUTE!!! PHOOM!!!!" And there goes his head over D.C. with enough psi to launch a football into outer space.
Grassley's tweets should be used in a PSA to explain why we can't expect bipartisan solutions on healthcare (not to mention political ads on whoever will oppose him next election cycle). Anyone who thinks that's an effective way for a politician to communicate has no business making decisions that will affect the health & lives of millions of citizens.

You left out the part about Grassley apparently having an emotional age of 16.
"evenworkingWKEND"? "u think evrything is NAIL I'm no NAIL"? Really?
Twitter is way more revealing than at least half of the people tweeting realize it is.

You got me there. I guess I thought it could go without saying. Although 16 might generous.

I agree with shortstop. Grassley's tweets make him sound more like Tweety Pie than a US Senator.

On this, I have to agree; Grassley is not "a nail." His intelligence predates the technological development of a nail, therefore rendering upon this writer the profound belief that Grassley is a wooden peg....

Steve - seriously, I know Republican staffer who work with Grassley who admit he's just plain not very smart with an enormous ego to match. It is a wonder how any good gov. makes it through the Senate.

Is Grassley demonstrating that he is a Man Of The People by not bothering to spell-check his tweets?
And is "...you got nerve while u sightseeing in Paris..." typical Twitter-abbreviation, or faux-Black-English?
Posted by: Seth Gordon on June 8, 2009 at 8:50 AM | PERMALINK
It would be a joke. Except its not funny. To the narcissist all things are about the self so, naturally, a generic observation by a popular leader in a regularly scheduled weekly address is aimed solely and directly at Chuck Grassley.
But even funnier, of course, is the hysterical "worked the weekend!" Is he mad that on Monday he's going to have to wear a "My president went to Paris and all I got was this lousy t shirt?" t shirt?
Not only does this, as spanky and shortstop say, sound like a sixteen year old it sounds like a sixteen year old with some sort of freudian issues with father figures and homework.

I think the ascendancy of the Religious Right to take control of the Iowa Republican Party has driven Grassley right over the edge. After all, they wouldn't even let him be a delegate to the GOP convention last year. Given many of his statements during the past couple years, he seems to becoming increasingly unhinged.
That said, a bipartisan health care bill is not gonna happen in any event; it's not in what the GOP sees as their own best interests since the wingnut wing of the party has BECOME the party and they don't want GOP votes in Congress to be cast for anything that Obama wants. It's a colossal waste of time trying for bipartisanship these days except as window dressing further convincing independents that the GOP is crazily partisan.

You mean after Obama's week, spending Sunday with his family before returning to the US, it was running around sightseeing, Grassley is an idiot to say the least, he must have forgotten Bush brush clearing weekends on his farm (with no animals & no crops) but a farm that was window dressing to make him seem folksey. At least with Obama, we have a working, articulate, smart president.
Anyway - lets get on with healthcare reform Grassley.

Geez, Senator, if you had only spent more time in Paree, you might have made it off the farm. And, not joining Harold Hill's band - Yeah, keep on Twitterin' in the pool hall and sniffing all of that Ethanol.

As someone who spends WAY too much time watching the Senate on C-SPAN (Love those quorum calls; I can catch up on my nap time), Grassley is an Angry Old Man. (Ranking Senior Republican, since Ted Stevens left. . .)

Grassley is obviously losing it, tho I'm not sure he was ever there at all. Looks like his opponent will be Bob Krause, Chair of the Iowa Democratic Veterans' Caucus. For the sake of Iowa, the country, and the cause of rational thought, he can use your support. http://www.krauseforiowa.com/

just plain not very smart with an enormous ego to match
This could describe pretty much anybody in the Senate, including all the Replicants and, sadly, a hefty percentage of the Democrats.
That said, I think Grassley's outburst is a response to the pressure he's under to complete the Health Care Obstruction Initiative before health care reform starts getting serious consideration.

Especially on health care, where a reasonable universal healthcare program will stick a stake in the heart of the Republican party for good. Other countries have shown it: there's no going back after that, and "American-style health care" becomes an insult.
I dearly hope all this bipartisan talk is just intended for Obama to use as ammo when the conservatives try to co-opt and kill the plan, because the insurance industry and the right will fight to the death on this.

Grassley worked the weekend? Good grief, how noble. The only one in the world working the weekend no doubt. Did it occur to him that President Obama was on a business trip and took some time for some sightseeing? What a totally weird attitude.

When will what is left of Republicans in office grow up and grow a pair? Grassley's tweets are more proof that they are learning to use 21st century technology but don't realize the implications of it. The wheels have come off the GOP wagon, and there seems to be no conservative anywhere with the intelligence, temperment, or the courage to represent his constituents in a dignified, responsible, honorable way. Continual Republican tirades of anger and frustration, ugly personal attacks, or predictable criticisms and obstruction are backfiring like a toddler's endless temper tantrum. It's not working, yet conservatives continue to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result! Is there not a single Republican out there who can behave like an adult? Until and unless Republicans get over their anger, accept their minority status, assume mature leadership and work with the new administration, Republicans will continue to make fools of themselves.

Could Grassley's be upset because the president, although an avowed (socialist, fascist, musselman, terrorist-loving, apologist, anti-American (choose any or all)) has refused to consider single payer as a solution. Think that's it?
Nah, me either.

Reading this fool's "tweets" makes it all too clear why Twitter has caught on like wildfire among the Villagers. The 140 character limit is about all most of their mental faculties will let them handle. Is Grassley a U.S. senator or a ten-year-old girl? Reading that gibberish it's hard to tell.

I think you're right. This is about trying to score political points. We can't have our president sight-seeing while he's on a business trip -- not in this time of economic peril. He MUST work every single second he is not sleeping, otherwise he will be wasting the taxpayers' money.

Just goes to prove once again that congressional staffers should never let their bosses have access to Twitter. Too many of them are just suits with good hair and as Senator Chuckles has once again shown, they're really not all that bright. If they really want to get re-elected they shouldn't display their childish ignorance quite so publicly.
The question of whether these chowderheads can actually solve the problems that beset us all is another matter entirely, but we'll get to it sooner or later.

Oh honest to Pete, Grassley stole that quote off a commercial advertising the new season of The Closer on USA...it's been showing a teaser for about a WEEK solid...What a wuss he is. Trying the show Rush that you are a MAN standing up to that big bad Obama??? And while he is working his WKND what DID he think Obama was doing???
