ABOUT THOSE MISSILE DEFENSE CUTS.... In general, Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin (R) is not known for being detail-oriented in her policy critiques. Over the weekend, though, she was in rare form, attacking the Obama administration for proposed cuts to a missile defense network, cuts that Palin believes will leave the nation less safe.
"Reducing Alaska's defense readiness in these perilous times is a show of weakness, it is not a sign of strength," Palin said during a celebration in upstate New York. [...]
Palin said Alaska's missile defense system is now more vital than ever, particularly in the wake of North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests. She said a missile fired from North Korea could easily reach Alaska and other parts of the country.
"And yet, Washington thinks it's best now to actually cut defense spending in Alaska by hundreds of millions of dollars," she said. "Now that is an odd priority there."
What's really "odd" is Palin's argument.
Let's set the record straight here. The White House and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have proposed reducing missile defense spending from $10 billion to $9 billion. The missile network in Alaska would still exist, and it would have 30 interceptors.
The significance of the Alaskan program right now is the need to respond to a hypothetical missile attack from North Korea. Since North Korea's nuclear arsenal is quite small, 30 interceptors are more than sufficient to address the threat (if the highly unlikely attack were to occur). The governor is arguing that, in fact, 44 interceptors are necessary. Why? She didn't say.
Palin didn't explain why she perceives this as a "show of weakness," but the awkwardly-worded criticism doesn't stand up well to scrutiny. Come to think of it, the same can be said for most of her policy arguments.
Update: As a couple of commenters remind me, all of this is premised on the notion that the defense network actually works -- a dubious proposition, to be sure.

I wonder who's handling her. She really exhibits all the characteristics of a badly programmed android. There is no authentic intelligence there, just the suggestion of intelligence, wrapped in a pleasing thermo-neo-plastic exterior; but owing to the flaws in it's programming, don't expect coherency from it's utterances.

Maybe Gov. Palin can get some tips from Sen. Grassley about communicating complex aspects of policy. Her statements do have the remarkable quality of using full-flung discourse to express Twitter-sized thoughts.

Palin, and those who suppoert her on the national political stage, is not a thinker. It is entirely within keeping for the Republican Party to make pronouncements that make no sense. The sad thing is that those who suppoort her neither realize nor care if arguments make sense or not.

Speaking of impending attacks:
(AP) The man charged in the shooting death of abortion provider Dr. George Tiller warned Sunday that more violence is possible.
Scott Roeder, being held on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault in Tiller's killing one week ago, called The Associated Press from the Sedgwick County jail.
Tiller, whose Wichita clinic was among only a few in the U.S. performing third-trimester abortions, was shot while serving as an usher at the Lutheran church he attended.
"I know there are many other similar events planned around the country as long as abortion remains legal," Roeder said.
He would not elaborate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scott Roeder claims to be in possession of information about an impending terrorist act. He refuses to elaborate regarding this information. Where are those on the Right clamoring for the use of enhanced interrogation techniques being employed to extract this intelligence?
Unfortunately, Steve's post seems to imply that these so-called interceptors actually work. They don't.
$9 billion on missile defense is $9 billion too much.
What do you expect? She has deluded herself into thinking that she is Obama's opponent in 2012, and she wants to project the image of taking him on today.
Except that she doesn't know how to pick her battles, she has no practice at the discipline of careful thought, and she belongs to the party of NO.
Also.
Chris is correct. This is the national exposure necessary for her to run in 2012. It does not matter if her big lies have any factual bases, only that she gets to repeat them often and loudly - so she can keep getting attention and gain prominence. Can we ignore her and see if she goes away? Then see if that strategy works for Liz Cheney and Newt Gingrich, too?
Why do big government Alaskans like Sarah Palin expect taxpayers from Hawaii and the lower 48 to protect them from North Korea. Let them research and finance their own pie-in-the-sky defense system.
Truth is, they're going to need all 30 interceptors to hit one warhead.
What, exactly, is worth nuking in Alaska (from the viewpoint of Korea, that is)?
the awkwardly-worded criticism doesn't stand up well to scrutiny
That's not the same as saying it won't be well-received by the crowd that thinks "showing strength" is the most important thing we can do as a nation. They tend to be a "scrutiny-lite" crowd, from what I've seen. . . .
I like CJ's take. Fuck Palin. We cant afford her anymore.
No No No! You are falling for the North Korean bamboozle! Just because NK can detonate a bomb (incompletely, BTW - they still cant get the Trinity-test equivalent to work correctly), and can launch a missile, doesnt mean that NK can launch a nuke on a missile. Higher grade technology thay lack. Dont fall for it!
Not only did she spend her Republican Working Weekend speaking out on Defense Policy Issues, but she also found time to attend a Yankees game.
If you could ever convince a conservative that our missile defense system doesn't work, they'd only respond, 'all the more reason to increase funding!'
Let's not forget who we're dealing with.
Posted by: beep52 on June 8, 2009 at 9:55 AM | PERMALINK
This depends on both the North Korean missile AND the interceptors to work. Given that I would say the chance of a Korean missile being shot down in the next 15 years as essentially nil. And it really doesn't change if we have 5,000 interceptors or 0.
Ah, St Sarah, just send Kim Jong II some of your pinups. You know the ones with you standing in the snow clad only in your mukluks aiming your moose rifle to the sky. That will either scare him or enthrall him. Win-win.
Can't we remind Palin that our enemies are listening, and that her attacks on the Commander-in-Chief in A Time of War not only embolden our enemies making them think we are divided, but also alert North Korea to weaknesses in our missile defense system that it would not have known about without her broadcasting them all over the world....?
After all, if the tables were turned it's what she would do.
Anyone else notice that she is talking about the defense of ALASKA? Not the U.S.
So, we're spending 10 billion a year to defend ALASKA? What a moron.
Palin is just continuing the long tradition of Alaska pols in trying to squeeze as much money out of the federal purse as possible. It isn't really the diminished defense she cares about, it's the diminished sum being spent in Alaska.
I doubt we'd hear so much if the cuts were in Seattle.
It might insult the people of the state of Alaska (though they did elect the woman, so how much deference do they deserve?), but: the North Korean leadership is crazy, but they aren't so crazy as to waste any of their (as yet imaginary) nuke-tipped missles on a big empty state like Alaska. They'd want to aim at a place where they could damage something.
because republicans suck at math...
That is an excellent question. Could it be because he's a white, so-called "Christian" and not a scary brown man with a Middle Eastern name? The hypocrisy of the Right never ceases to amaze me.
Ah, how times change - Why, back in the day, Annie Oakley with a Moose rifle was worth, at least, 14 interceptors any day. More practice St Sarah; just get out on your back porch and yell at Kim Jong, "Pull".
This is the pinnacle of demagoguery. Everyone knows the "missile shield" does not work.
The military gives itself a 10 point grading system for determining successful test results. Do you want to know what is on that list, besides hitting the target?
One of the criteria is that the interceptor completes a successful launch! The Chinese have been launching rockets for thousands of years, and we pat ourselves on the back because our ABM system actually takes off?!!
The last information I read was that in most of the tests that involved actual hits, the projectile had a homing beacon installed in it. Do you think Russia would be so kind as to guide our interceptors into the target? The other criteria are just as asinine.
Palin is so stupid. How could anyone take her serious. This is a woman who had to go to 4-5 different colleges just to get her journalist degree. The only reason she is governor is because of her beauty pageant. I can't believe people will elect someone just because of the way they look. She sound like a dumb hillbilly. It scares me to think that the people of the US would actually consider electing someone as dumb as Palin to run the country. I can't imagine her mingling with other countries prime ministers/presidents. I can't even see her dealing the our men in uniform. I wonder would they take her serious? Before I put my trust in Palin, I would leave the country. It would be embarrassing.
If memory serves, Sarah Palin has a son serving in the Army.
Seeing how Gates wants to shift funding away from pie-in-the-sky programs with dubious real-world military value towards those programs that will better support troops in the field now, you'd think Palin would want the money spent on the latter.
Or is DoD welfare to Alaska more important?
