TUESDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Devastating: "Militants opened fire on security guards and rushed a small truck packed with explosives through the gates of a five-star hotel in this northwestern city on Friday, detonating a huge bomb in the parking lot that killed at least 11 people and wounded 55, Pakistani officials said. Witnesses said the blast left a crater six feet deep and 15 feet wide and was powerful enough to be heard for miles. Police officials estimated that more than 1,000 pounds of explosives were used."

* WaPo: "Ten of the nation's largest banks will be allowed to repay $68 billion in federal aid granted at the height of the financial crisis, the Treasury Department announced this morning. The banks, which could begin to return money this week, include J.P. Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Capital One Financial, according to statements from the companies."

* More interrogation secrecy: "The Obama administration objected yesterday to the release of certain Bush-era documents that detail the videotaped interrogations of CIA detainees at secret prisons, arguing to a federal judge that doing so would endanger national security and benefit al-Qaeda's recruitment efforts."

* On a related note, Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham are prepared to shut down the entire government over Bush-era torture photos.

* The Sotomayor hearings will begin in the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 13. Senate Republicans, as usual, aren't happy.

* Sotomayor received some unexpected support today from Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.), who defended her "wise Latina" remarks.

* If the U.S. Supreme Court delays the deal between Fiat and Chrysler, the arrangement may fall apart.

* I'm starting to get the impression that Jon Voight isn't very bright.

* Which is the majority party in the state Senate in New York? Your guess is as good as mine.

* GM gets a new CEO.

* Waxman-Markey would raise billions in revenue, not raise the deficit.

* Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) won't filibuster a public option, but Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) won't support a public option.

* Brendan Nyhan has a great timeline on Obama loyalty smears.

* George W. Bush, secret Muslim.

* George Will thinks the president uses the word "I" too much. Will doesn't know what he's talking about.

* And finally, it's nice to see far-right "quackery" get this kind of attention.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Whitacre's merely the new chairman of GM. Henderson's continuing as CEO. You need to correct your post.

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) won't filibuster a public option, but Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) won't support a public option.

Under the budget resolution recently passed, if a healthcare plan isn't passed by October 15, reconciliation rules kick in. I understand Obama wants to hurry, but I hope he uses this sledgehammer to full advantage.

Any politician that does not support a public option is in the tank with the insurance companies bar none.

It's maddening to think that any democrat would be against the government offering an alternative choice to consumers, allowing them an option other than private insurance plans. Don't democrats tend to think the government can provide solutions? Nelson and Landrieu ARE NOT democrats and should be targeted in their next elections.

What is so wrong with the government offering a choice to consumers? Beyond the obvious effect of cutting in to the private companies profits, is the opposition based purely on the belief that government will lose money and offer poor service? Is that why these 2 are putting up such opposition?

Again, they need to be targeted in the next election.

I'm starting to get the impression that Jon Voight isn't very bright

Which only makes him vulnerable to simplistic propaganda, fear mongering and puffed-up nationalism. A perfect recruit for the insurrection. Remember that any duly elected Democrat is by virtue of affiliation a traitor and must be delegitimized in the public eye, and rendered impotent in the political arena. The Democratic party cannot be allowed to succeed at anything.

The latest is a call from conservatives to boycott GM and Chrysler to spite Obama. Think about that for a second. These people don't just want Obama to fail, they are willing to be active participants in making failure a reality.

Here's a new poll with encouraging results for Sestak over Specter. Essentially, only the uninformed prefer Specter.

GM gets a new CEO.

The former head of AT&T. That should go well.

Would it be too much to ask that some of these revolving doors between all these companies be closed and sealed shut? Maybe if it wasn't for the same greedy gaggle of 50 CEO's running between (and in many cases looting and nearly destroying) their companies many of these businesses would be in better fiscal shape.

Why no mention of the 2 reporters convicted of spying in N. Korea? And, the similarity to our non-trial of Gitmo detainees for unspecified crimes? At least the 2 reporters were tried. Oh, there were no observors? Excuse me, but when was the last public hearing of the Tribunal for Gitmo detainees? Any convictions? How long did it take the 2 women to be tried and convicted? How may years did they spend in prison without charges being brought? How many times were they waterboarded or sleep-deprived? Sexually humiliated? We don't know? There are no videos? What kind of freedom are they receiving? And, N. Korea is different how?

Perhaps Liz and Dick would like to comment.

Geez, recent comments by Jon Voight and Frank Gaffney make George Will look like a moderate.

Posted by: appletree on June 9, 2009 at 6:25 PM | PERMALINK

Sen Mary Landrieu (D-La) just told the American people to go screw themselves. Why wouldn't she support a public option....because it would prevent the private ins from profiteering at our expense and show would not get those campaign donations.

Read the comments after that John Voight video to see the willfully ignorant haters and blamers so fact free who believe in a comic book America where the only education is none so their families will be more acceptable. Every comment Voight made was stupid and contemptible...like the drunk at the end of the counter who just pissed himself yet tells out that everyone stinks they just won't admit it. Mentalities like his would get us all killed.

When he says Obama wants to give America away and commenters say "thanks for telling the truth" or "telling it like it is" or "truth hurts don't it liberals"...you know you're in Bizzaro land ruled by Palin in buttless leather pants pulling Gingrich on a pet chain around his neck and winking out orders to build up a tower so she can see Iran from Alaska and therefore know what they are up to while people like Voight tells us how great our empire could be if we just released the nukes...to the cheers of supporters yelling now we'll show those liberals...TV has dumbed down America to the point where fantasy is reality...just saying... here are the real stars of "Idiocracy"

Nelson and other are trying to figure a way to make sure a pubic option...if allowed...will be a disaster...just like Medicare part D is making Medicare a huge deficit while enriching big pharm(and paying Nelson and others handsomely).

They will try to make sure that like Medicare only ht elderly or disabled or simply those in greatest need of health care ins will be the only ones covered when they know already thet Medicare for all would solve all problems and decrease costs to about 10% of what anyone currently pays...and it would include dental.

OR...they will get it delayed for years in the hopes of getting a new administration or at least continuing the profiteering for at least 7yrs more while they milk the system for all it's worth and hopefully break the treasury. Buried alive in a see through coffin till single payer not for profit Medicare for all becomes a reality...but only after 5000 more deaths occur from their profiteering game playing.

They can't even begin to explain why "Single Payer" is off the table...but we know why...it would be completely successful and the answer to all our problems with Health care INS. and put an end to the profiteering and lobbyists campaign donations to the tune of billions of dollars. Conservadems have been bought for they have no legitimate reason to deny single payer not for profit health care INS besides they have been paid to reject it.

"[George] Will doesn't know what he's talking about."

Understatement of the year, so far.

And maybe we'd have a working healthcare system. Hail-fellow-well-met corporatism and mutual board sitting is a very significant reason why big business isn't leading the charge to universal health care, despite health care representing an absolutely crushing cost to these companies.

The Jon Voight video was some good stuff. You get the feeling someone just wrote down a bunch of gibberish to see if he would read it, Anchorman style.

SO, in other words, by authorizing Torture, GW Bush HELPED Al Qaeda recruit MORE members??

Vicious circle? Closed-Loop reaction? GOP stupidity?

SO, in other words, by authorizing Torture, GW Bush HELPED Al Qaeda recruit MORE members??

It's better than that. By authorizing torture and hiding the evidence, Dubya rigged it so that anyone who revealed the truth of what he did would be helping al-Q recruit more members.

It's a brilliant foil worthy of... Cheney?

Our CEOs won't abide it!

NYT: China has issued a sweeping directive requiring all personal computers sold in the country to include sophisticated software that can filter out pornography and other “unhealthy information” from the Internet. The software, which manufacturers must install on all new PCs starting July 1, would allow the government to regularly update computers with an ever-changing list of banned Web sites.
We can have faith our American CEOs will do the right thing. Educated in the best American Universities they've had plenty of business ethics classes. Also, many of our top CEOs are republicans and loathe the idea of Big Government control:
PC makers that serve the Chinese market, among them Dell, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard, said they were studying the new rules and declined to comment...
Beyond the nettlesome issue of abetting government censorship, they said six weeks was not enough time to shift production on such a large scale. “Many of us are going to take it in the neck with this mandate,” said one executive. “It has put people into five-alarm mode.”

Okay that is a bit chickenshitty...
But once our CEOs sniff out the true depth of the repression, I am sure they will do the right thing:

In recent months China has tightened its Internet restrictions, including an “antivulgarity” campaign that has closed down thousands of pornographic sites but also nonsexual sites, including some of the most popular bulletin boards and blog hosts. China already employs more than 30,000 censors and thousands who “guide public opinion” by flooding bulletin boards with comments favorable to the Communist Party.

Now that's astroturfing baby! No American CEO could possible abet that evil.... right?

Insert crickets chirping and the money quote:

This is not the first time that foreign companies have been enlisted in government efforts to police the Internet. Google already removes politically forbidden results yielded by its popular search engine, Microsoft allows censors to block content on its blog service, and Yahoo was widely criticized for turning over information that was used to jail a journalist. “I would advise dissidents to buy computers before July 1,” said Clothilde Le Coz, the head of the Internet freedom desk of Reporters Without Borders.

You guys didn't know about Jon Voight? Since he got his role on "24" He learned all about that terrism stuff from Jack Bauer. Become a real expert on ferign policy and all that stuff, not to mention he played FDR in Pearl Harbor so he knows how to be a president. When I want definitive political analysis , he's the guy I turn to.

It's official; Virginia Democrats have repelled the loaded cartpetbagging city slicker and our home boy has done good :) I knew Deeds was gonna sweep the floor with the other two in my neck of the woods (McAuliffe 36, Moran 16, Deeds 387), but even I didn't expect this kind of blowout across the state; Deeds got almost every city and county in Va... And the turnout was better than expected, too, despite the thunderstorms. My town had 13.2%; unprecedented for non-presidential primaries.

Posted by: exlibra on June 9, 2009 at 10:03 PM | PERMALINK

Exlibra: Yeah, I favored Deeds and this is good. Curious irony: Deeds is conservative enough that he won't scare very many Repubs, we can get progressiveness but keep them happy about A2 etc. I was campaigning directly for Signer for Lt. Gov. He was promising but lost to the OK enough and well-liked Jody Wagoner (and also because of the great popcorn her company makes.) Funny how big the margins were in these races. Thunderstorms, hell yeah ... are you in SE VA as well?

As above.

New Chairman not new CEO.

The CEO runs the Company.

The Chairman runs the Board of Directors.

That is a very key distinction in all the corporate governance literature. In fact in the UK, almost universal best practice (on pain of investors not investing) is a split in the roles between 2 people.

What the heck? The right makes ridiculous claims about people thinking Obama is the messiah, while no one who supports Obama thinks he's the messiah. Voight is basically calling his own side liars, and mistaking it for a brilliant political argument.
