STEELE HAS A CHANGE OF HEART.... Just two weeks ago, when prominent Republican voices were throwing around insulting, racially-motivated attacks against Sonia Sotomayor, RNC Chairman Michael Steele encouraged his party to take a rhetorical detour.

"I'm excited that a Hispanic woman is in this position," Steele said on May 29. He added that instead of "slammin' and rammin'" on Sotomayor, Republicans should make a "cogent, articulate argument" against her on purely substantive grounds.

Twelve days later, Steele seems to have changed his mind.

In an interview with CNN's Campbell Brown on Tuesday, the Republican Party leader insisted that white males would not be granted even-handed jurisprudence under a Court with Obama's nominee.

"God help you if you're a white male," said Steele. "If you're seeking justice, this may not be the bench you want to go before."

Got that? On May 29, Steele saw no value in attacking the Supreme Court nominee with racial politics. On June 9, Steele wants white men to think that Sotomayor is incapable of treating them fairly in a court of law.

The chairman of the Republican National Committee, in other words, is effectively accusing the judge of racism, after encouraging Republicans to stop accusing the judge of racism.

What's worse, of course, is that Steele's race-based fear-mongering has no basis in our reality.

Tom Goldstein of Scotusblog conducted a much-cited study of the 96 race-related cases that have come before her. Like almost all judges, she has rejected a vast majority of the claims of racial discrimination that came to her. She dissented from her colleagues in only four of those cases. And in only one of them did she find racial discrimination where they did not. Even with what she calls her "Latina soul," she saw almost every case pretty much as they did.

When you read her opinions, race and gender are invisible.

Steele isn't just smearing a qualified judicial nominee, he's using ugly racial attacks. What an embarrassment.

Steele is standing up for today's most oppressed minority, the white male.

Liberals crucify him for it, but normal Americans realize he's a credit to his race.

Steele wants white men to think that Sotomayor is incapable of treating them fairly in a court of law.

Not only that, but he wants them to think the 6 white males on the court will cower to her.

Republican love to decry affirmative action, but obviously implemented it when elevating Steele to RNC chair. They chose him because he's African-American, and paid no mind to his obvious stupidity.

There is no dearth of intelligent African-Americans in this country. Problem for the GOP is, nearly all of them are Democrats. ;)

Has politics always been a comedy? Maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

Do not, repeat NOT, throw these Neanderthals (with apologies to a great, now extinct branch of humanity) into the briar patch, no matter how much they provoke us. Let them continue to get themselves stuck to the tar baby they insist on playing with.

myke k,

you've got a vague pronoun reference in your comment. who's the him in the second sentence? steele or the white male? please learn some grammar.

Repubs are determined to suck up to Bubba until the last Bubba dies, and for Steele it's a question of get on the bus or be thrown under it. My guess is he's given up on accomplishing anything in this job, and is already angling for a gig with some Catholic lay organization on the not too distant day the GOP dumps him.

Posted by: penalcolony on June 10, 2009 at 1:13 PM | PERMALINK

who's the him in the second sentence?

Obviously you had a public school education.

Liberals are lynching Steele, who's a credit to his race.

I think he just called her a "feminazi".
Isn't that the term Rush approves of for uppity women?
So far we have had
too fat
too female
too foreign
Now she is too feminist, as well.

So I see Michael Steele is contradicting himself again, just like he has on Rush Limbaugh, looking forward, abortion rights, and investigating torture. I'm tempted to simply ignore him, as I know Steele's position is largely symbolic and powerless, but he's just too damn funny. It's like the RNC is being chaired by Mr. Bean

Posted by: Master Mahan on June 10, 2009 at 1:31 PM | PERMALINK

"chaired by Mr Bean" - Well, Jacques Tati was no longer available and toooooo French.

"God help you if you're a white male," said Steele. "If you're seeking justice, this may not be the bench you want to go before."

I wonder if Michael "I'll repeat any GOP talking point I'm told to" Steele would be making such a transparently ridiculous and offensive statement if Judge Sotomayor was African American?

Posted by: electrolite on June 10, 2009 at 1:35 PM | PERMALINK

By the way, you see how Myke K referred to white males as the most oppressed minority? I think the bit about Steele being a credit to his race and all might be sarcasm.

Steve Benen quoted:

As usual, Steve goes irately chasing after the Republican nutcase, while ignoring the real problem: the corporate-owned mass media (in this case CNN) that consistently, incessantly -- and very deliberately -- legitimizes Republican nutcases and bullhorns their bullshit into the living rooms of tens of millions of Americans, day in and day out.

DJ (@1:2 PM) and Master Mahan (@1:37 PM), Myke K is a parody of semi-regular conservative poster Mike K. Myke does such a good job with the parody and hyperbole that it's sometimes hard to tell the difference. Be sure to note the spelling of the first name, if you're not sure.

For those who don't realize, the commenter "Myke K" is a parody of an actual commenter who used the name "Mike K" when copying-and-pasting inane boilerplate right-wing talking points.

Myke with a Y is parody - Interesting, how that back handed compliment of old has faded. When, I was a youth, I often heard and read that expression. Any excellent African-American athlete, actor or musician who did not stand up verbally to The Man in the press was, usually referred as being a "credit to his or her race". Never heard anyone say "Mickey Mantle or Roger Maris were "credits". So, happy that expression has bit the dust.

"God help you if you're a white male," said Steele. "If you're seeking justice, this may not be the bench you want to go before."

Yeah, cuz the court will only have FOUR white males on it, plus a black man who has never ruled against a white male.

Oh, the horrors!!!

Posted by: Sarah Barracuda on June 10, 2009 at 1:50 PM | PERMALINK

Boy ... that reversal is really, truly, seriously embarrassing for Steele. Good thing the man has absolutely no sense of dignity or shame. Otherwise, he would quit.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Steele was called on the carpet and told to knock off the calls for civilized discourse, and get with the race-baiting program for trashing Sotomayor.

The question is - Steele clearly isn't calling the shots for the RNC, and he is being forced to use plays out of someone else's strategy playbook (even at a humiliating cost to his own credibility). Who are the people calling the shots over there?

Posted by: Bokonon on June 10, 2009 at 2:00 PM | PERMALINK

Loombowel emailed Steele and told him, it was time to make an appeal to the resentment of white males for the greater glory of ReRushlickins taking back power.

Where does this embattled white male myth come from? White males have run this country for 200+ years now without much challenge. Don't they look at the composition of Boardrooms, Congress, the courts, etc.? Why does no one challenge them on this myth? Even with minorities growing, they manage to stay on top. Even white women haven't made inroads in a significant way.

Posted by: Always Hopeful on June 10, 2009 at 2:20 PM | PERMALINK

Why is he suddenly so worried about whitey. The court will still be a conservative white male bastion.

Posted by: Marnie on June 10, 2009 at 2:33 PM | PERMALINK

Where does this embattled white myth come from? Much of it stems from the excellent parody of "Archie Bunker" - Lear nailed that canard, but, the right has taken Archie and his complaints to heart. Liberals viewed "Archie" as satire - The Right counted him as one of their own. If the blue collar guys had some bad luck in climbing the ladder, they could never place the blame on their financial RepuG betters or their bosses. No, it had to be the fault of some ethnic group which had received, in their eyes, some favoritism. So "Archie", as well as "Joe" portrayed so wonderfully by the late Peter Boyle became their standard bearers.

In an interview with CNN's Campbell Brown on Tuesday, the Republican Party leader insisted that white males would not be granted even-handed jurisprudence under a Court with Obama's nominee.

Despite, you know, the presence of seven other white males on that same Court.

What a numbskull.

"The white male is the Jew of liberal facsism." -- Jonah Goldberg.

I'm starting to really wonder if Steele knows he's black. Didn't Chapelle have a skit about a black guy in the KKK who was blind and didn't know he was black?

Posted by: doubtful on June 10, 2009 at 3:52 PM | PERMALINK

This really is going to be a major change to the Supreme Court. The SCOTUS has never been limited to a mere six white males, unless of course you count the period between 1993 and 2006. That was a famously liberal court, though, as demonstrated by their ruling in favor of George W. Bush in Bush v. Gore (2000).

Hmmm... well, there's never been less than eight non-white justices before. Clarence Thomas is going to have to start sharing his drinking fountain, and after Scalia had it specially installed, too.

Posted by: Master Mahan on June 10, 2009 at 4:02 PM | PERMALINK

As constitutional scholar Mark Tushnet put it:

The Warren Court saw the status of African Americans as the central issue in constitutional law; the Burger Court saw it as an important issue; the Rehnquist court did not see it as an issue at all.

Given the Roberts Court's direction on race so far, I'd think this is exactly the sort of bench a white male with a race-based claim would want to go before. If Obama had nominated Henry Billings Brown, Steele would complain that he should have gone with a justice more in the mold of Roger Taney.

"God help you if you're a white male." And I thought the Republicans had turned Colin Powell into a Tom. God help you, Mr. Steele.
