SHOOTING AT HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM.... A scary scene in Washington, D.C., this afternoon.
A gunman exchanged fire with security guards inside the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday.
U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said the gunman walked into the museum with what he described as a "long gun." The gunman and a security guard were shot. Both were taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries wasn't immediately known.
U.S. Park Police initially gave slightly different information, saying three people had been shot. Fire department spokesman Alan Etter told CNN a third person was hurt after being cut by broken glass. Several witnesses said they saw the security guard on the floor and bleeding.
An NBC News report, citing law enforcement officials, identified the suspect as James Wenneker von Brunn, an 88-year-old Maryland resident*. The report added that von Brunn "may have had connections to hate groups or anti-government groups."
Dana Goldstein added that the suspect runs a white-supremacist website, which includes a biography that says von Brunn spent over six years in federal prison for attempting "place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent, citizens [sic] arrest." Goldstein also noted that the suspect has authored a pamphlet entitled, "Kill the Best Gentiles: A new, hard-hitting expose of the JEW CONSPIRACY to destroy the White gene-pool." He has also written that "Hilter's worse mistake" was that "he didn't gas the Jews."

If only the Department of Homeland Security would study and release a report on dangerous right-wing groups, maybe this could have been prevented.

Nah, this is an isolated incident. Just like the anti-abortion assassin associated with Operation Rescue. And the Tennessee skinheads who wanted to kill Obama.
If you were to link these issues together and see a dangerous pattern, clearly, you would have to be an Islamofascist communazi. Also.

Roedy, then this mentaly diseased mutt. Can we please now admit we have domestic terrorists running loose with guns? And it's a potential public safety problem?
Posted by: c4logic on June 10, 2009 at 2:46 PM | PERMALINK
How do these criminals get guns? Shouldn't the right-wingers be asking that question?

I doubt this fellow was white or supremacist although The One's jackboot administration is probably forcing the U.S. Park Police to say he was.
More likely "James Wenneker von Brunn's" real name is Jamil Waheed vohra Baddour.

Word.
But of course, this ugly incident has nothing whatever to do with the hate speech flogged regularly by the extremist right-wing John Birchers who run the Republican Party and its media, right? Right?

Hmmm, 89 years old, Nazi sympathizer, heavily Germanic surname, hates the Jews. Does the Weisenthal Center know about this guy? I'm guessing maybe they didn't all end up in Argentina.

So did anyone get a chance to count how many rightbloggers posted about this as "ZOMG! Muslim terrorist!" before any of the facts were known? I'm guessing that Malkin did so immediately, but I'm not interested enough to go look.

I'm sure glad it never occurred to Hilter to gas the Jews...

Mnemosyne,
The best I could come up with was Atlas Shrugged who said "FOX news is talking to a couple who saw the shooter on the ground, but no one dares ask what the shooter looked like."
Looking into it, though, I ran across this post from the geniuses at protein wisdom about the Air France crash: "I look forward to hearing what the gate agents and airport security have to say on this matter. I’m sure I’ll be outraged if I find out that 200+ people died because someone didn’t want to be guilty of profiling."

Please, someone post his political affiliation. Not that we don't already know, but let's get it our there. I am sure that the 'fair and balanced' nutwork, Fauxnews will have this headline coming out tomorrow:
"ANOTHER REPUBLICAN TERRORIST STRIKES! KILLS AMERICANS ON AMERICAN SOIL"
Anyone who encourages or incites these nutjobs needs to be locked up with them, along with a cell buddy named Bubba.

Did I hear correctly that an MSNBC reporter, when told that the killer thought that the US fought on the wrong side of WW2, responded with “There are slews of people who feel like that, what’s different about this guy?”
The fact that the killer thinks the USA should have allied with Hitler and joined in genocide - isn't - a good enough reason for the reporter to believe that he'd actually want to do something "different" like kill people at a Holocaust Museum? He thinks "slews of people" hold these opinions and it's surprising that one of them would do something crazy and violent?
Like - "Sure, he thinks all Jews should be exterminated, but that's normal. What made him actually do something about it?"
On what planet doesn't that lose you your job?

Wow, I lost track of all the ways that this comment is offensive. Congratulations - just when I think that the Interwebs can no longer surprise me, it's nice to find something a little bit lower. Congratulations on your moral bankruptcy - keep reaching for that rainbow! /sarcasm

Um, Hitler did gas the Jews, didn't he? I suppose this scumbag's gripe is that Hitler didn't gas all of the Jews.
Yeah, no right wing domestic terrorism to see here. Do we have to wait until they blow up another federal building, or even worse?

With these extremist actions, likely inspired by certain rhetoric, let us remember to have courage! Despite the fear-mongering and the hate from the Reich Wing, let us move forward with change and be brave!

More likely he's a Holocaust denier. It's that special blend of hatred and cowardice that lets Republicans hold thoroughly evil views while refusing to own them.

To be fair, if he hates Israel, he doesnt have much in common with Today's Republican Party. He's maybe more of the Buchanan stripe.

Actually he spent 6 years in Federal prison in 1981 - becuase he went into the Federal Reserve with a sawed off shot gun - because he wanted to take the control away from the Jews (his words)
the guy is a nutcase

So he "WALKED" into the museum carrying a "long gun." What the heck.
If I were King of the Country,
Not Queen, or Prince or Duke.
I'd find the guy in charge of security
And him I'd severely rebuke.

Where and how did Jimmy manage to lay his hands on a gun? Seeing as he'd spent 6yrs in federal pen for a crime which also included a gun?
One bit that struck me as really strange is the age of the guy. Usually, as the testosterone levels go down, so does the murderous rage; most of violent crimes are committed by much younger people. But here's an 89yr old, with (long, yet!) hardware, not only willing to use it, but able as well. Must be something about those superiour German/Austrian genes...

And today, I am told Limbaugh is as usual spouting off his hate speech against Obama, saying that Obama does not have a birth certificate. How many lives will be lost because of Fox. I can never forget the Palin rallies, where people were shouting 'kill him' (Obama) and Palin was looking on, smiling at them.
Posted by: JS on June 10, 2009 at 5:19 PM | PERMALINK
I was at a right wing blog that blamed Obama for this. Can someone please explain the connection to me?
Posted by: Chris R on June 10, 2009 at 6:40 PM | PERMALINK
I can't believe that happened. It's sad that such hate exists in the country, in the world...
Posted by: Chrystal K. on June 10, 2009 at 6:41 PM | PERMALINK
It is my understanding that membership in these types of hate groups have increased since Obama became president. Could this be the connection?

Okay, this hit a little too close to home for me. Our 12-yr. old daughter is touring D.C. this week with a friend and was just a couple of blocks away when this happened. Didn't freak out when I heard the news, but I did QUICKLY place a call to her cell phone just to make sure.
Never, ever thought I'd have to worry about my daughter potentially being in the line of fire of some deranged a**hole.

Well now we all know the direction this country is going in. Since we've progressed so much on the outside by putting a Black President in office we have regressed over-all by being exactly what Eric Holder called America. "COWARDS". Since November there have been blatant attacks on minorities from police shooting young ladies holding their babies to videos showing police harrassing people. This killer was on the feds radar but as long as his crimes are against people of color they did nothing to stop him.Now another blackman dies at the hands of a white man.........Its old..

Blah, Blah, Blah, Yes it's terrible, yes von b is a terrible waste of space, yes I'm sure the guard was a wonderful man.
Do we need to have the military involved with a simple shooting? (NO) Do we need to have foreign govts. involved with our own domestic shootings? (NO)
Is the media response WAY overblown? (YES!!!)
Is the world going to have to be beat over the head about the Holocaust until the end of the world? (Probably)
