WEDNESDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* The guard shot at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum has died.

* The suspected killer is a "birther" with a long list of groups of people he hates.

* A car bomb at a crowded food market in southern Iraq killed about 30 people today and wounded dozens more.

* The Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal on the Chrysler sale to Fiat, and the deal was reportedly wrapped up today.

* NYT: "The Obama administration on Wednesday appointed a compensation overseer with broad discretion to set the pay for 175 top executives at seven of the nation's largest companies, which have received hundreds of billions of dollars in federal assistance to survive."

* Seventeen Uighurs find a new home in Palau.

* A "grass-roots rebellion" was launched against the Taliban in a remote area of northern Pakistan yesterday.

* The U.N. Security Council is moving closer towards toughening export and financial sanctions on North Korea, including possible inspections of North Korean ships.

* Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) took an unusually antagonist attitude towards HCAN, the major health care reform coalition, this afternoon. "I am unaware that HCAN has any votes on the floor of the United States Senate," Conrad said, after saying he doesn't much care what the progressive coalition thinks.

* Organizing for America takes the next step in organizing in support of health care reform.

* Hopes that Ted Kennedy would rejoin the Senate appear to have been overly optimistic -- he is poised to undergo a new round of chemotherapy and is not expected back in June.

* Operation Rescue may purchase Dr. George Tiller's clinic.

* Maine considers creating a unicameral legislature.

* Hey, look, Liz Cheney is on national television again. And wouldn't you know it, she's still lying about her father's record.

* It looks like David Letterman's anti-Palin "Top 10 List" went too far.

* I have no idea why conservative media personalities continue to pick fights with Jon Stewart, but Joe Scarborough can't seem to help himself.

* Jeremiah Wright has become a ridiculous parody of himself.

* And some Senate Dems had a little fun yesterday, putting together a guide for lawmakers who feel they can't scrutinize Sotomayor and tackle their usual Senate duties. It's called, "A Handy How-To Guide for Republican Judiciary Members: Special mastication and ambulation edition." It offers step-by step instructions on how to walk and chew gum at the same time.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

* Seventeen Uighurs find a new home in Palau.

I wonder if anyone told them and/or asked them if they wanted to go there. Palau doesn't sound to me like the ultimate heaven. Also, I thought Albania had agreed to take them, since they already have some Chinese Muslims there (voluntary refugees); whatever happened to those plans?

Posted by: exlibra on June 10, 2009 at 6:03 PM | PERMALINK

I cannot imagine that the Tiller family will have anything to do with selling their building to Operation Rescue. If they acquire it, I'm certain that Operation Rescue would make it a museum in homage to Roeder, the man who killed Dr Tiller.

Other than to pour salt on the wounds of the family and pro-choice advocates, what other reason could they possibly have to purchase the building?

Letterman went too far? Hell, he didn't go far enough to be funny on this one, IMO.

Even so, thanks to the loons at Hot Air for bringing it to our attention.

I don't think so, Steve. Did you read the story?

Operation Rescue says it might want to buy the clinic. A lawyer from the Tiller family says screw Operation Rescue's latest publicity stunt.

Say, remember a few months ago when we were talking about whether the intense, over-the-top anti-Obama rhetoric of conservatives might create an atmosphere conducive to violent action on the part of fringe groups and lone wolves?

Yeah, me too. I wonder who'll be killed next week.

re: Letterman

Very funny and not at all "too far." She did compare her self to a pitbull after all, made herself a laughing stock on national TV, and stirred up proto-violence in her rallies.

It's odd that a governor or a state with a population of only 686,293* (2008 -- US Census) with little experience in the world and a poor education would think herself qualified to run a country with an economy of $15 trillion when her own state's economy is was about $1.3 billion (2005). Note this is about 11,500 times smaller than the economy of the US.

She is really no better than a small town mayor.

Tell her to call when she has an education and some real accomplishments.

*only about 1/4 larger than Tucson Arizona's 518,956, in 2006. (US census)

While I agree it was kind of a lazy top 10 list from Letterman, I think the joke totally went over the heads of the Hot Air (what an appropriate website name) loons. The joke was that Palin has such a bland, conservative fashion sense that she considers "slutty flight attendant" to be a really daring, extravagant look. And note it only took 13 comments before someone used the opportunity to trash Michelle Obama.

sleepy-commentator I don't know the answer to your question, but I suspect the usual suspects at Fox and on talk radio will be cheering the nut cases on. At the very most they will be denying responsibility while they wink at the camera.

Also, when was the last time a liberal went over the edge and started killing conservatives?

It's not like it's ever happened. Not even once. Yet for the last 40 years it's been all about "Kill the dirty liberal hippies!"

Kent State? MLK? JFK? Matthew Shepard?

Do liberals publish books titled "CONSERVATISM is a mental disorder"?

Posted by: anonymous Guy on the Internet on June 10, 2009 at 6:41 PM | PERMALINK

I never really thought David Letterman was funny anyway, he has that grating, trying-too-hard style that just doesn't amuse me the way naturally funny people (like Jon Stewart) do. Jon Stewart can read the news straight, make a smirky face that perfectly conveys his skepticism, and get laughs without even making a joke - George Carlin had that knack, too.

In any case, I'd say he did cross the line here, particularly with his rude remarks about Mrs. Palin's daughter. It's bad enough to imply Sarah Palin will drop her knickers for anyone (which no evidence whatsoever supports), but it's quite another thing to take cheap shots at a girl who made a mistake.

Progressives and self-declared liberals have a solid enough platform from which to mock Mrs. Palin, based purely on her almost-daily forays off the map of common sense. I'm only moved to defend her in the same spirit I would any woman who is being ill-used just to get cheap laughs.

Posted by: Mark on June 10, 2009 at 6:46 PM | PERMALINK

Mark, I have to say that my wife agrees with you about Letterman's Bristol Palin comments. I agree with my wife. Letterman was way over the line. As to the slutty stewardess look comment, well, I have to admit that was an insult to slutty stewardess's everywhere.

No, killing by anyone on either side of the political spectrum justifies killing by the other side.

Anonymous, change was made via the ballot box, although some so-called Democratic Senators appear not to have noticed. It was not done by the use of bullets. The extremists of the right are attempting not only to circumvent the laws of the land, but, to intimidate anyone from being protected under those laws. In November, this nation went to the polls and a peaceful revolution was obtained. We do not need guns and violence to achieve such goals. Never, never become your enemy.

The trouble with fantasizing about doing the same to the right-wingers is that, at least for us normal folks, the levels of violent hatred aren't there and the fantasy dissipates for lack of fuel.

I truly detest right-wingers and Republicans. Just not nearly enough, I suppose, to become a nut-job assassin. And "liberals"? Give me a break! They're totally bereft of violent hatred.

One of the things that bugs me about "liberals" is how damn Kumbayaa they are.

HIPAA doesn't, generally, prevent medical clinics, with all associated records, from being sold to a new owner.

Yes, but would the new owners be allowed to release them to the public or other non-medical personnel? The fear is that Operation Rescue would take patients' medical records and use them to harass those patients. It would seem to me that it would be illegal under HIPAA for them to do so, but I'm not sure.

Posted by: Mnemosyne on June 10, 2009 at 7:23 PM | PERMALINK

Mnemosyne, I'm not a lawyer, and not very familiar with the HIPAA act, but I would think that unless one medical business/practicioner (which would not include Operation Rescue) were buying the entire practice with the intention of continuing it, they would not get patient records, just the building and whatever furnishings were negotiated. Even if by some chance Operation Rescue were to be considered a medical business/practicioner (though I don't see how), they would not be allowed to sell or use patient information in such a manner. That's already against the law.

That is just sick...outrageous trying to turn a clinic into a memorial to honor dead and dying "fetuses" Not babies you lunatic. This from a guy who stated publicly that a woman one day pregnant who had an abortion is a "baby killer".

A handful of cells is not a baby...it's an embryo. This guy should take biology at least if he goes around condemning mother savers and women's life savers as baby killers...no that turd is not a baby brother Terry.

This a-hole should be in prison for terrorism...for cultivating murderers...what a mockery he makes of life saving medical care. How many children he is responsible for to make orphans whose mothers will die trying to deliver a dead or dying deformed fetus because they can't get life saving care for fear that the care giver will be murdered.

Just like killing anyone who taught a slave black man to read and write. This pathetic radical ignorant fanatic got a man murdered with his lying ignorant condemning rhetoric and now stands to make a mockery of the murdered man's life saving care to mothers with families, who wanted families but were dying from complications...just to justify his lies. Just pathetic.

We're left with a general impression of "Lucky Uighurs!!"

No mention of how long they spent in Guantanamo, that the charges against them were baseless and that this has been known for years... I guess the NYT has mentioned this before and so such background doesn't merit a graf in this piece.

Isn't anyone is interested in obtaining military intelligence anymore?

Perhaps this administration just didn't agree with the former administration's policy of torturing people who hadn't been convicted of crimes, much less charged with them.

Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd on this issue:

"There has been no policy change nor blanket instruction for FBI agents to Mirandize detainees overseas..[w]hile there have been specific cases in which FBI agents have Mirandized suspects overseas, at both Bagram and in other situations, in order to preserve the quality of evidence obtained, there has been no overall policy change with respect to detainees."

Or based on this statement maybe they are still torturing people, to the relief of right-wing nuts. It's tough to say.

It was funny but couldn't have been applied to Clinton...only to "in what respect Charlie, I read them all Katie" Palin.

Even if by some chance Operation Rescue were to be considered a medical business/practicioner (though I don't see how), they would not be allowed to sell or use patient information in such a manner. That's already against the law.

The Operation Rescue people don't seem to feel constrained by the law. They were already taken down once using the RICO statute and managed to reconstitute themselves. I could very easily see them releasing the records knowing that it's illegal.

Putting a few of them in jail after they release all of those patients' private medical information would be cold comfort to the women who would then have to deal with crazy forced birthers stalking them.

Don't lose hope; trust Obama and dems. No one functions at 100%, right??

"The Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law has released their Report Card grading the Obama Administration’s transparency efforts at the 100 day mark. The full report is available online. At the 100 day mark, the report concludes that the Administration has made many positive strides in making government information more publicly available, but still has significant work to do to match policy efforts with rhetoric promising more openness by administration officials. In particular, the report takes a tough look at the Obama Administration’s continued use of the State Secrets Privilege, also the subject of an editorial in the New York Times (discussing a 9th Circuit Three Judge Panel Ruling).

Senator Russ Feingold (D) Wiconsin, has also issued a report entitled “Restoring the Rule of Law: A Report on the Obama Administration’s Efforts in the First 100 Days,” which also gives the President high marks for open government efforts, except in the category of “State Secrets”.

Open government advocates will continue to monitor the Administration’s transparency efforts. A good website to track government transparency efforts is maintained by Open the Government, a coalition of open government advocates."

I'm getting emails from conservatives about Obama etc, and the following is the latest and very chilling how they are focusing on Hitler comparisons. A bit long, but perhaps worth the "bandwidth":

Try and Guess WHO I AM?

I was born in one country, raised in another. My father was born in another country. I was not his only child. He fathered several children with numerous women.

I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me. My mother died at an early age from cancer.

Later in life, questions arose over my real name.

My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.

I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs & didn't follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.

I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them..

That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.

I wrote a book about my struggles growing up. It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.

I became active in local politics in my 30's then with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s. They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything. That reinforced my conceit.

I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks.

I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances. This bolstered my ego.

At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy. I was very critical of my country in the last war and seized every opportunity to bash my country.

But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy. I pretended to have a really good plan on how we could do better and every poor person would be fed & housed for free.

I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess. It was the free market, banks & corporations. I decided to start making citizens hate them and if they were envious of others who did well, the plan was clinched tight.

I called mine "A People's Campaign" and that sounded good to all people.

I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics & was able to gain widespread popular support.

I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope', together we could change our country and the world.

So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities" like the Jews. My true views were not widely known & I needed to keep them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader.

I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with.

I'm glad they didn't. Then I became the most powerful man in the world. And the world learned the truth.

*Who am I?*

I am ADOLF HITLER

The Oracle: "'A little bit nutty, a little bit slutty': weren't these song lyrics in a Country and Western song?"

I believe those were the original lyrics from the title song of the Donnie & Marie show ...

"Cut him some fucking understanding" - bjobotts

Oh, I've got plenty of understanding. But the blogs are full of all kinds of trolls these days, and he smelled like one to me.

And why should I be nice to someone who spews his anger that way? I'll save the nice for people in need.

Groundhog Day: Bush a Tragic Figure, Still Denies His Incompetence (May 29, 2009)

BENTON HARBOR/ST. JOSEPH, Michigan – Private citizen George W. Bush poked his head out from his quiet, exclusive Dallas neighborhood last night to give his first major speech since leaving office. Ironically, the place he picked is near [Detroit,] one of the nation’s poorest, most racially divided cities. It also happens to be in one of the reddest, most conservative congressional districts. The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan attracted 2,500 people who greeted the former president with great warmth and excitement. It was obvious that they must be the 30 percent of Americans who have remained loyal to Bush. However, it was evident that one of the lowest-rated presidents of all time is not someone office holders want to be around these days. Republican Representative “Freddie-boy” Upton, Bush’s nickname for him, was not there nor were other local political officials who are customarily introduced at such affairs....
Choosing a vice presidential candidate was Bush’s first big decision, he said, and he looked for someone who could advance his own credibility. Cheney was a “thoughtful guy” who would “do a good job.” Besides, Cheney wasn’t interested in running for president so he wouldn’t distance himself from the president if something went wrong. Such ironic comment was typical throughout the speech and Bush and the audience seemed quite oblivious to it.

In another instance, a woman asked what impact his strong religious beliefs had on his presidency. He replied that “religion and politics are a dangerous mix” and that he “made religion a personal matter” by trying to practice Jesus’ commandment to ‘love thy neighbor.’ ...[Bush] seemed concerned that Americans had somehow taken to negatively stereotyping Muslims in the Middle East. Such comments made it hard to believe that Bush’s perspective and reality could be one and the same thing....

As usual, Bush relied on his words and force of personality to convince people of his best hopes. The former president...received a standing ovation when asked what he wanted his legacy to be. “Well, I hope it is this: The man showed up with a set of principles, and he was unwilling to sacrifice his soul for the sake of popularity.” Little did Americans realize after the 2000 election that this administration would attack American civil liberties and regard the Constitution as just a piece of paper! Of course, September 11 pervaded his speech. Only this time he used it less to strike fear in his listeners but more to solicit pity for himself. “You have to convey a sense of calm,” he said. “If you’re president of the United States, if you overreact, you send shock waves throughout society.”

...So how will the country ultimately judge George W. Bush? Seeing him in action clearly illustrates that he is a tragic figure not because he presided over the worst attack on the United States in history but rather that he thought he could be a competent president. “It was my honor [to serve as president]” he said. “I love America and I wanted to serve in any capacity.” Such statements belie his actions, starting with when he went AWOL from the Texas National Guard.

Bush also illustrated that he is not aware of whom he is: a man who took political advantage of a disaster and then ruined his own presidency. He will forever remain responsible for our fallen and wounded; the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi and Afghani dead, wounded, and homeless; our shrinking treasury; and our reputation in the world. Bush may have charmed his supporters in the room last night but it is doubtful he will have the same effect on most people. And after witnessing this first major speech, it is obvious that it will be difficult for him to be George W. Bush, probably for the rest of his life. ---Olga Bonfiglio

I agree with the gist of anonymous Guy's posts.

Failing to understand that many hardcore conservatives believe that liberals are weak and should be exterminated because we pose a threat to their perceived view of America is foolish.

These people live and breath hatred. I imagine more than a few of them go to bed at night with their hands clasped in seething prayers for the death of liberals.

So, please, stop the hollow, idealistic BS such as "when you become like your opponent, your opponent has won." That sort of thing may play well in Sunday school, but it has no place at all in 21st century America where the first African-American president has apparently already been the target of assassination plans, and some crackpot allegedly Christian loon can walk into a guy's church in Kansas and blow him away.

Recognizing that there may come a time we have to fight back is not "becoming" like our opponents.

For someone who dislikes hollow rhetoric, you seem to be indulging in purposely vague sloganeering. Why don't you tell us exactly what you mean by "fighting back"? Be very specific in describing both the actions to which you're referring and the precise people at whom you think those actions should be directed.

Bush got a lot more of what he wanted than most presidents ever do. I suspect Pres. Obama grows frustrated with those in the political process who aren't informed or who play politics and simply waste time instead of solving problems. There's probably a strong feeling of anger which arises after the frustration. Unfortunately that could bleed over into other things he's doing and it's a very insidious destructive emotion.

I hope he is buoyed by his family and any positive things he can do. It's important for a leader to see the bad as well as the good, but it's also important for them to have a strong sense that things will work out okay, that they can solve problems and that the people he must work with are capable.

I think Bush had people he trusted and who were capable, and in some cases were too loyal. I hope Obama has that too.

Can we assume you read the comment from 6:26 which has been deleted? The outrage was not his portrayal of the right, but his suggested response, which was inappropriate even though it was probably also just hollow rhetoric.

"What does God and Obama have in common?" - Rush Limbaugh 6/10/09

"Neither has a birth certificate."

What does Rush and Killer James Von Brunn have in common?

Both erroneously think Obama isn't a USA citizen.

Pretty slick, sending the Uighurs off to Palau - less chance of awkward Boumedienne-type interviews that expose the inner workings of our torture state. No doubt they'll wind up dead when media interest dies down.

"I have no idea why conservative media personalities continue to pick fights with Jon Stewart, but Joe Scarborough can't seem to help himself."
Scarborough is stunningly shallow in thought word and deed. He just wants the media coverage just like his idol Limbaugh.

OBAMA NAMES ENVOY TO NY LEGISLATURE

Continuing his practice of designating envoys to the world's hot spots. President Obama has dispatched an envoy to deal with the crisis in Albany. The control of the NY legislature is in dangerous contention, with the parties sharply divided and no resolution in sight.

With Holbrook and Mitchell otherwise engaged, the President has turned to another conciliatory mediator, former ambassador John Bolton. The president expressed full confidence in Mr. Bolton's ability to bring the parties together, citing his success in dealing with difficult countries and representatives in his years at the United Nations.
