QUESTIONS ONLY FOX NEWS WOULD ASK.... As regular readers know, most national polls from major news outlets are interesting for their results. Fox News polls are interesting for their questions. Most reputable news outlets try to maintain a degree of seriousness with their poll questions. Fox News prefers to add a little panache to their surveys.

It's always a bit of a mystery -- what kind of nutty questions can Fox News come up with this time?

First, the more mundane details from the latest survey. President Obama's approval rating was 62% in this poll, up two points from Fox News' poll in May. When respondents were asked, "Do you think the nation's economy is getting better or getting worse?" the overall responses were pretty evenly divided, but there's a huge partisan gap -- Democrats and independents were far more likely to see an improving economy than self-identified Republicans.

More interesting, of course, were the non-traditional questions.

* Fox News asked whether respondents have a "generally favorable or unfavorable opinion" of a variety of individuals and institutions -- including ACORN. The poll found that 17% have a favorable opinion of ACORN, 31% have an unfavorable opinion, 17% can't say, and 35% have never heard of the group.

* The poll asked, "Who do you think is better qualified to manage major American businesses and corporations that are having financial problems -- the federal government or business executives?" Not surprisingly, a plurality (49%) believed business executives are better qualified to manage businesses. And since no one is suggesting that the government manage American businesses and corporations, the question doesn't mean anything.

* Fox News asked, "Do you think it was in the country's best interest for the government to save General Motors or should the government have let the market determine whether GM survives?" Given this wording, it was hardly a surprise that a 52% majority preferred letting the market decide. (Alternate question the network didn't ask: "Do you think it was in the country's best interest for the government to save General Motors or should the government have let GM collapse and take millions of American jobs with it?")

* The poll asked, "Barack Obama says he quit smoking cigarettes. Do you think Obama is still sneaking cigarettes at the White House or do you think he has completely quit smoking?" I have no idea why the network, or anyone else, cares.

* And the poll also asked, "Who would you rather meet and have your picture taken with? Barack Obama, the Pope, Hannah Montana, or Tiger Woods?" Overall, the president was easily the top choice, but among Republicans, Tiger Woods beat out the Pope.

"Barack Obama says he quit smoking cigarettes. Do you think Obama is still sneaking cigarettes at the White House or do you think he has completely quit smoking?"

It's call projection. They know their alcoholic hero GWB was still drinking in the white house, so ....

"Do you think Democrats have stopped supporting terrorism and providing aid and comfort to our nation's enemies? Yes or no?"

"As a follow up to the previous question, where should Obama's next Apology Tour take him?"

35% never heard of ACORN and 17% can't say whether they have a favorable opinion of it? That's a propaganda failure.

Boxers or briefs?

I like the President just fine, but I think I'd rather have my picture taken with Tiger Woods. Also, I would see if he could do something about my slice.

Hanna Montana, the Pope, or Tiger Woods? Is this for real?

You sure you didn't pull that one off of ComedyCentral.com?

Maybe 10 days ago, as we were nearing our primaries I was polled. We were getting about one a day at that time, from individual campaigns as well as "general" pollsters and all of those were fairly short. This time, the name of the polling firm was unknown to me and the poll took about half an hour.

About third question in, I realised it had to have been paid for either by McDonnell (the Republican candidate for Governor) or, perhaps, by the Repub party of VA, gearing up to run a against McAuliiffe (some questions were definitely push-polling).

So I let fly. I want more taxes, I want the government to take over, etc, etc, etc. Every question they tried to maneuver me into answering in a particular way, I answered the opposite way, no matter how outrageous. And I made snide comments... about the deceptively named "right to work", about the intellectual level of Regents Law School graduates, etc. And I asked the young lady (possibly a Regents graduate herself) to speak veeeery slooowly , because I was a foreigner, and she did (so the poll took closer to 45 minutes).

Hadn't had as much fun in years! Wish Focks Noise would poll me...

Do you think it is difficult for Fux Newz to look this damn stupid, or do you think it comes naturally?

Are you required to watch Fux Newz or are you too dim to realize you are a tool?

Do what I do with the surveys the RNC sends me. Send them back with only one answer - the tracing of your hand giving them the one-finger salute.

It's Miley!!

I'd love my picture taken with Tony the Tiger. Guess this is what Krathammer meant by alternate reality.

Do you think Obama is still sneaking cigarettes...

Beautiful! Recognizing that you have no information upon which to think anything at all, what do you think?

A much better wording would have been, "do you believe Obama is still sneaking cigarettes..."

Fox viewers don't think anything, but they believe all kinds of crap.

Do you think Sean Hannity slaps or pulls the hair of teenage boys while he sodomizes them?

The poll proves beyond a reasonable doubt that pre-teen girls are NOT Republicans.

Abour the smoking question. Did Fox ever ask the same question about Bush's drinking?

Good grief. Hannah Montana? The Pope? Tiger Woods? Come on -- a picture with Obama, hands down.

Of course if you through in Penelope Cruz as an option, I would have to bow to my shallowness in the presence of hot Spanish women.

yikes -- make that throw. Apparently just thinking about her...

The poll asked, "Who do you think is better qualified to manage major American businesses and corporations that are having financial problems -- the federal government or business executives?"

Interesting... the same percentage of Faux News-watching mouthbreathers also opined that business executives were better qualified to manage the federal government. And such as.

"Barack Obama says he quit smoking cigarettes. Do you think Obama is still sneaking cigarettes at the White House or do you think he has completely quit smoking?"
Personally, I think that Barack Obama never really smoked cigarettes. He only took up the habit so that he could "break" it, and he did that only so he could do so and still bum cigarettes off general officers in the Situation Room.

Because his Administration needs to be even a little more like Jed Bartlett's.

Wait a minute!!! What was that about Tiger Woods beating up the Pope?

Posted by: Mark on June 11, 2009 at 10:25 PM | PERMALINK

As far as I can tell, Fox is intereasted in Obama's smoking because they want to know if they need to prepare to smear Biden when he's Prez.
