PENCE'S POOR PLAN.... George W. Bush's top negotiator with Iran, Ambassador Nicholas Burns, believes President Obama has shown sound judgment by showing restraint in the midst of developments in Iran. Burns told NPR, "President Ahmadinejad would like nothing better than to see aggressive statements, a series of statements, from the United States which try to put the U.S. at the center of this, and I think President Obama is avoiding that, quietly rightly."
Leave it to congressional Republicans to try step in and give Ahmadinejad the rhetorical life-preserver he's been waiting for. Here's a statement this afternoon from Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), the #3 leader in the House Republican conference, on his new congressional resolution on the Iranian election.
"Today I'm introducing a resolution that ... express its concern regarding the reported irregularities of the presidential election of 12 June, 2009. It will condemn the violence against demonstrators by pro-government militia in Tehran in the wake of the elections. It will affirm our belief in the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections. And lastly, and most importantly, it will express the support of the American people for all Iranian citizens who struggle for freedom, civil liberties and the protection of the rule of law."
Adam Blickstein's response was spot on.
There is nothing that the very people Pence is decrying would like more than to show how this is an "us versus America" battle and paint the dissidents and Mousavi as tools of the American government. And creating at least an appearance of disunity in the American government provides ample ammunition for the regime and Ahmadinajad government to do just that. Pence is treading on some pretty dangerous ground, and he will invariably become a talking point for the thugs and Iranian officials who are attacking the opposition and embarking on violent suppression of dissident Iranians. I just hope Pence understands that political posturing like this should stop at the water's edge, especially when thousands of lives and the future of a nation are at stake.
This note, from an Andrew Sullivan reader, also reinforces the sense that Obama has it right, and his detractors have it wrong: "I'm an Iranian living in Canada. A few hours ago I talked to my brother who is a student at Sharif University, he was at the big rally yesterday and they were only feet away from Karoubi when they marched from the university entrance to Azadi square. He asked what had Obama had said and I started reading the transcript. When I got to 'the United States can be a handy political football, or discussions with the United States [can be]' my brother sighed and said thank God this guy gets it."

Remember, the Party of Limbaugh will want nothing more than to see Obama fail. And what best way to do it than to engineer a foreign policy disaster and then blame Obama for it? Pence is not posturing to amuse himself. He's deliberately undermining Obama's careful foreign policy in order to undermine Obama's administration in general.
Or at least that's what Republicans would say if it were Bush, not Obama, and a Democratic member of Congress. So, what we need now is a massive freakout from the majority party about how Pence is (gasp!) publicly disagreeing with the Commander in Chief and thus should be hanged, drawn and quartered. In his underpants.

Pence and the Republicans DO NOT CARE about what is happening in Iran. All they care about is an issue to use against Obama and keep Americans afraid of the Iranian boogeyman. That their actions might have consequences beyond US borders does not even factor into their thinking.

pence will think himself a hero... being demonized by the thugs of the Iranian gov... and he'll care less about the repressive repercussions his actions widen...
sorta the mentality of the wingnut keyboard star troopers....

Mike Pence is Ahkmadinijad's best friend and coming to his rescue at his most critical time. How shameful. Please get that guy off of the tv. He is a danger to our national security and giving aid and comfort to our enemies.

Mike Pence needs to shut the fuck up NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Pence is unconcerned with anything but political gain...typical republican stupidity. Is there no end to the number of republicans willing to demonstrate what fools they be...it's like watching a drive in beach blanket movie. How about some deliberative thinking...try starting with the Shah of Iran.
Stay the hell out of what you have no idea about Pence...the stakes are over your head.

Normally we should treat the fringe lunatics in the minority party (which is to say, most of them) with the seriousness that they deserve (which is to say, none). But this sort of thing isn't just cheap silly politics, it's directly and incontrovertibly against our national interests. Pence, a lot like Mark Kirk, has quit playing politics and has become just plain un-American.

Good thing we had our own little revolution here in the U.S. a few months back, or this dolt's words might actually mean something.

"Thank God this guy gets it." Right now, could there possibly be any sweeter words about an American president from an Iranian student in a demonstration?

I doubt anyone in Iran cares what Mike Pence does and the house of reps has almost daily resolution of stupidity.
What matters is what Obama, Clinton, and a handful of others say and do. The guy I am worried about looks like Captain Crunch and could easily say something really stupid.

Do I really look like Captain Crunch?

TOO MANY REPUBLICANS have not gotten over the revolution of 1979. They should.
FACTS: The hostages have been released, the Shah is not coming back.
No matter which side wins, Iran will not be a secular society in the near future.
So leave this alone.

I'm sure others said this plenty, but again:
The point of the Right in complaining about "not doing enough about Iran"/X/Y/Z is not to serve US interests or that of foreign peoples, but to whip up sentiment that Obama is weak, etc. That means, they put their political advantage above the good of the USA. OTOH, when critics of Bush complained he was doing too much etc., stopping him would *have* been better for the USA.

If Mike Pence had 30% more wit, he would qualify as a half-wit.
It is continuously amazing where the dumbocraps and rethugnicans get their leaders. That Pence is the #3 rethug in the house is almost as embarrassing as Harry 'no spine' Reid being the lead dumbocrap senator.

Let me rephrase that slightly,
TOO MANY REPUBLICANS think Americans have not gotten over the ouster of the Shah in 1979. They should.
Two generations have grown up since the Revolution and nobody under 40 in America even remembers, or probably, cares about it. The Shah is dead and is not coming back. While Iran may change it is not going to be a secular dictatorship.
So if the Repubs still try to use this as something to damage Obama, they are, as usual, completely clueless.

Tyrants physically abusing unarmed protestors is a Mike Pence/Republican Congressional delegation wet dream. They don't oppose Ahmadinejad so much as they envy him.

Mike Pence is an embarrassment to by state. The man is just a hack. It's unbelievable sometimes.

Why does Mike Pence hate America?

The republicans are not the only ones who gain if this morphs into, at least the appearance of, a US vs Iran confrontation.

What if Ahmedinejad really did win?
That isn't the only article on the Web maintaining that Ahmedinejab is likely the real winner. Releasing the result before there was time to count the ballots was obviously an "own goal" as they say in soccer. But lots of analyses support the claim that Mousavi's support, like the Shah's support 30 years ago, is narrow.
If the regime permits these protests to proceed peacefully day after day, and conducts an open recount, they'll emerge at least as strong as before.
Good reason for Obama to remain silent for long periods of time, and to then speak vague platitudes in support of the Iranian people.

Actually, the aggressively imperialistic comments by the GOP opposition for a US intervention in Iran could be a good thing. Their bellicosity serves to underscore the restraint and goodwill of the Obama administration. It also works here politically, a side benefit.
