STEP ONE, STOP FILLING IN FOR BILL BENNETT.... There was a point a few months ago when it seemed RNC Chairman Michael Steele would say something ridiculous and/or humiliating just about every day. Steele has wisely pulled back from the media spotlight a bit, and in turn, seems to embarrass himself far less often.
But for some reason, he continues to guest-host Bill Bennett's conservative radio talk show every Friday. Invariably, Steele starts speaking his mind about something he knows nothing about, and it produces gems like this one.
The context was Steele's response to a call from a physician with a question about preventive care.
"Well you'll get issued, Doc, you're gonna issue, to your patients, a health care card that's gonna be part of a national ID system that, you know, every time I charge something or use that card, it's going to show up on a grid what I've done and what I have failed to do, according to the government plan. So the government will know whether or not I've had my physical at the appropriate time and then probably some health police will come knocking on my door telling me I'm now costing the system money because I haven't, you know, gone and done my preventive care."
Now, in our reality, none of this makes a lick of sense. Steele's dystopian nightmare about "health police" is purely a figment of his bizarre imagination.
But Steele keeps popping off anyway, unconcerned about how foolish his nonsense makes him appear.
He has to have better uses of his time. Doesn't he have, you know, a national political party to run?

What are the health police going to be?
FORCING EVERY AMERICAN TO BUY PRIVATE HEALTH DENIAL INSURANCE!
That is the only health police we will have. Forcing us to pay into a system which denies healthcare; one which the health insurer's themselves have said they will continue to throw people out midstream of their treatments.
How much are they going to charge for mandatory coverage if you have a health issue?
That is more transfer of wealth. Transfer my health to a company which only wants to make a profit.

"Doesn't he have, you know, a national political party to run?"
I don't see much evidence of that. Which one?

In order for the public plan to work, Democrats have to go out to the media and debunk even the silliest of claims, in plain language.
Unfortunately, ONLY Howard Dean is doing that. Obama & Sebelius did some teasers, Daschle completely walked back, Kennedy is ill, and no one pays attention to Dodd.

Steele doesn't care what you or I think. If he thinks his base and border-line clear thinkers would buy this bizzare rethoric he's happy to dispense it. Gladly.
There must be a seperate reality for these ass holes who think only liberals, progressives, and borderline Independents get sick. Conservatives, Republicans, NeoCons, and anyone else who thinks a Public Option is a bad thing never get sick, owe doctors or hospitols any money and that they will live forever.
La La Land. What a nice place.

Steve,
The idea of health police doesn't make sense. It's not workable on a whole bunch of levels. We all know that.
But that's how Steele and the conservative Republicans think. Have a problem? Pass a law and get police to enforce it on the plebeians. (It won't apply to the upper classes like Steele and his conservative cohorts. Laws and police, you see, are to keep the lower classes in line.)
And democracy is, to them, a farce. Only the upper classes (themselves) are competent to govern.

With apologies to Zell Miller (yes, irony intended), MIchael Steele's is a national party no more.

So yesterday Republicans compared themselves to oppressed Iranians, today they decry the imagined oppression of "forced physicals". There can't be many Americans who live in this fantasy world.

The party had already been "run" off a cliff and smashed into the rocks below long before he assumed leadership, so there's really not much for him to do. You can't run anything if there's nothing there for you to run.

There must be a seperate reality for these ass holes who think only liberals, progressives, and borderline Independents get sick.
It's not a separate reality. Opponents of a public option can afford their healthcare. In fact, members of congress have the best healthcare this country has to offer. Their corporate masters/sponsors could pay for 20 kidney transplants with out putting a dent in their personal liquid assets. Why would they be concerned about middle America? The average citizen's health problems are an after thought - conservatives are fighting an ideological war - a struggle of minds. There will always be a few (million) casualities. When it comes down to it, they just don't care.

Remember the Flouridation Conspiracy, back in the sixties?
I think the Dems have sureptitiously slipped stupid syrup into the D.C. water supply. Some secret substance that targets the Cognitive Center of the Republican brain.
Assuming such a center was there to begin with. . .

So now it's enforced physicals? What happened to the "rationing" and you'll never be able to get an appointment memes?
And now the "inefficient" gov't will be so on top of things that they will know immediately if you don't get your physical?
Their arguments are contradictory.

On the positive side:
If I had someone who would remind me that I needed to go for my check-ups, that my health was in danger, etc. That would be great. Heaven knows I need staff to take care of the details so I can get on with the business of thinking and being creative.
As for the Health Police. I think Steele has been reading too much Ayn Rand. It's fiction, Michael. The world is not black and white! We have an infinite number of possibilities, not just anarchy vs extreme stalinism.

and as foolish and ignorant as steele's comments are, they still resonate with the uninformed like my co-worker who doesn't want the gubmint deciding what doctors she can see.

Ironically, the kind of enforcement he describes would actually be more likely under a puritanical and cost-conscious Republican administration. We should be careful what we wish for....

It really is obvious that Republicans are such small-minded fools that all they can imagine is that everyone would do things the way they'd do things. Because the idea that all of our spending would go into a giant database that the government would search through in order to monitor our activity is what they planned for us to fight terrorism. They somehow imagined they could mine the data for certain types of behavior which would alert them to sleeper cells in our country. And of course, we can only imagine what other nefarious purposes this data would be used for.
And so when they see our plans for healthcare, they can only imagine we'd use similar means. They're authoritarians who are scared of their own shadows and seek unlimited power as the only means to protect themselves from their deepest fears.
