TUESDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:
* Iran's Guardian Council has "refused to nullify" the contested presidential election. No big surprise.
* Iran has also created a "special" court to try arrested protestors.
* Iranian women continue to stand up in large numbers.
* North Korea keeps making noises about its next missile launch.
* The deadly accident yesterday on the D.C. metro system was just breathtaking.
* More than a few politicos in South Carolina are having trouble believing that Gov. Mark Sanford (R) has really been hiking since last week.
* And even now, with Sanford poised to return to work, the governor who wasn't with his family on Father's Day also hasn't spoken to his wife.
* If you missed today's White House press conference, the entire video is online.
* Sen. John Ensign (R) of Nevada apologized to his Republican colleagues today, but he doesn't want to talk to anyone else.
* In an interesting twist, Sean Hannity believes Ensign should resign.
* Iran's dissident soccer players, banned for life.
* To her credit, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) isn't giving up on a public option.
* Even now, all of these years later, Richard Nixon can still appear even crazier.
* Next week, the White House will host an event commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, further evidence of the administration hoping to heal the rift with gay-rights supporters.
* What do you know, the state Senate in New York can get even nuttier after all.
* Recent buzz notwithstanding, the latest WaPo/ABC poll shows Obama with a 65% approval rating.
* Despite conservative rumors to the contrary, ACORN isn't changing its name.
* The Washington Times drops the pretense and starts doing conservative activism?
* The RNC and ABC are still at odds.
* And finally, Charles Krauthammer's criticism of Obama for describing Khamenei as Iran's "supreme leader" might be more persuasive if Krauthammer hadn't repeatedly referred to Khamenei as Iran's "supreme leader."
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Ooh, I see a red light. Tap tap. Is this thing on? Quick, quick, say something. Anything. Don't think, speak. SPEAK! Dead air time is a waste of energy, opportunity, and Precious Bodily Fluids.

"We are proud to be making a serious effort to go beyond mere punditry or stylized, bipolar debate..."
OMG, I LOVE this guy!! "Bipolar debate", indeed. He may have meant "bipartisan" but it's a lot more true the way it came out. More of this, please, and good on you, ABC!!!

I think Sanford misunderstood the "Wander in the Wilderness" metaphor and took it literally.

If the runaway guv went hiking, other people saw him and his car in one of the trail parking lots. Both are very crowded this time of year. If he went to Atlanta and hopped a plane, there are pics of his car going into the parking lot and leaving and footage of him going through security and boarding. His staff did him no favors by making up a bunch of stories to cover his antics as they will all be shown as lies.

A "special" court? Where have I heard that before?

Hate to break the news to the runaway Gov's staff, but last Sunday was "Naked Hiking Day" on the Appalachian Trail. Maybe they should have thought of another excuse?
CSM wouldn't lie about that:

Steve, if you think an unpublicized shindig with a few Beltway house faggots is the Administration's way of trying to "heal the rift" between itself and LGBT Americas, you are sorely uninformed. This is the Obama WH attempt to renew the flow of gay cash to the DNC, nothing more. Some petit fors and champagne to a few access-grabby queers is not "change," and change is what LGBT Americans voted for. Quoth Pam Spaulding:
Nice to know while service members are being discharged, and LGBTs are losing their jobs if they come out of the closet, and couples can drive across state lines and be married/civil unions/domestic partners/strangers in the eyes of the law that the champagne will be flowing and backs will be patted in the East Room.
If Obama wants to do something to "heal the rift" he needs to start with a big fucking apology to the constituents his DOJ compared to rapists and incestuous pedophiles. Then he needs to put his boot up Harry Reid's ass for a Senate version of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, get both bills passed, and sign the damn thing into law instead of playing "pass the buck" between the WH, the Pentagon, and Congress. Nothing less than legislative passing - not legislation introduction, not a crumb-y memorandum, not another vague statement of "protections" - will do at this point. We're done being fucked over by this centrist, pandering coward and his gang of butt pirate bootlickers at HRC.

The Washington Post is reporting that (1) the front car of the train that ran at full speed (about 50-60 MPH) into a stopped train on the track ahead of it was two months overdue for scheduled brake maintenance and (2) the train that failed to stop consisted entirely of ancient "Series 1000" Metro cars from the 1970s, which the NTSB told Metro several years ago were unsafe and should be either upgraded or removed from service; Metro did neither.
The Metro supposedly has automated systems that make such a collision "impossible" -- if there is a train stopped on a track, then trains behind it are supposed to be automatically prevented from moving forward. Obviously this system did not work.
At least nine people are dead and 70 injured, many of them severely.

Eh, was he watching the same presser ?

Iran's dissident soccer players, banned for life.
Luckily in the US, you only get suspended for a year. Of course, bridge doesn't actually have much of an audience.

Krauthammer is such a crock. Like George Will, a jerk wank with a veneer of patrician respectability - maintained by style distracting from the fraudulent substance.
Re Iranian women: yes, good for them, and BTW they are such sultry, smoky beauties! That Neda, just gorgeous. We're not supposed to think this way, but it hurts me more at least to see a pretty girl go down. That she did it as a martyr to a good cause is what really matters.

I know that I am getting exceedingly cranky in my old age, but...
The amerikan publik repudiated John McCrap's neocon warmongering views of foreign policy last fall. Why the fuck is the 'liberal media', in the form of Larry King, providing an hour long platform for McCrap to tell the amerikan publik why Obama's foreign policy is wrong?

Do you really think that New York State wants to lose the distinction of being one of the most dysfunctional governments?
Posted by: Schtick on June 23, 2009 at 9:29 PM | PERMALINK
AngryOldVet, I agree with you 100%.
I did not look at Larry King Live tonight because John McCain is a guest.
Same as I turn the channel when Pat Buchanan appears on Chris Matthews. This is also the reason I don't watch Morning Joe.
However, the GOP complains when they are not invited to cable shows other than Faux News. It's time people stop inviting them on shows to hear them bash the President. When people were angry about the election with B. George, the GOP asked everyone to support him, now that Mr. Obama is president, they have a different tune - that is to criticize his every move, and criticize him as a person.

Another week, another GOP 2012 POTUS hopeful disintegrates in self-immolated scandal.
So who can we expect to throw him/herself under the bus next week? I'm taking bets.

The train accident is just incredibly stupid. We spend so much on new technology and they keep a 1970s train in the mix. Whose brilliant idea was that?
Somebody should pay big for this.

Actually, this Stonewall-themed shindig has been the battleground for the LGBTs from about the beginning of this DOMA brief fracas. It's a major fundraiser for Joe Biden and as a result of the DOMA brief (and soft-pedaling repealing DADT, etc) people and organizations have started dropping out. The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network is going to be picketing, the local gay paper is going to photograph who goes in, even the invitations have been updated to treat protests (if any) as a lark following which you'll be welcome to a drink at the bar.

If we want healthcare, we need change.
May be we need to look after democracy here before we tell other countries how to live.
I've had enough of the posturing, lying, propaganda and hypocrisy. It's time to hold feet to the fire.
We're not going to get the obvious, sensible and real solution to US healthcare which is single payer, (No, that doesn't necessarily exclude private insurance.) combining Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, Federal, VA and the military, dumping all the unnecessarily different bureaucracies, and building a realtime medical IT system. The X-factor insurance costs.
If any of our representatives and senators want to vote against a federally funded public option, how about they give up their federal healthcare. Give them an extra $12,700 a year or so (the average family cover 2008), no tax break, and let them find their own.
And with ethics oversight to make sure they don't get deals or care other people can't.
Let's see if they like the insurance company control over their doctor's choices and their choice of doctors. Let's see what they call rationing. See how they like having to employ someone to fight their bills for them -- god knows they are too incompetent to do it themselves. Let's see what they think about nationalised health, socalization, and socialized medicine then.
Below's what I already sent my senator and rep (Klobuchar/Ellison) with some modification for them. We need a whole load of people to put these shits in a position of shame. We need this to spread exponentially. I'm going to spend the next few hours working the blogs and internet talking about healthcare, and hit all the Senators and as many reps as possible (though most won't accept non-constituents).
Help me, please. Hit all blogs, reps, sens, etc.
I recommend putting this somewhat in your own words.
==============================
Representative/Senator ---------,
I write to you concerning healthcare.
I understand the inertia impeding the attempt to make healthcare cheaper, more effective and efficient, far less complicated, and universal. Single payer, which would not necessarily mean no private insurance, is the way to go. Adding a publically (federally) funded option is a key if small, and complicating, step on this route.
In order to avoid any perceived conflict or hypocrisy, I recommend that any senators or representatives voting against a public option renounce their federal healthcare coverage and receive an additional $12,700 per annum (or equivalent, as this was the average health insurance family coverage premium in 2008), no tax breaks (like every other private insuree), and ethics oversight to prevent insurance company favoritism in cost, coverage or service, or federal help in fighting the bills or for care.
Let's see who is against a public option then.
I thank you for your service.
Sincerely,
My name
========================================
One of the Republican "talking points" is to tell anyone that is rich and says that they are willing to pay higher taxes to "Go ahead; pay more taxes. Send a check to the IRS." Let's all start hitting these people.
The young may not think this matters but I have been in the States almost 30 years and healthcare has gone from 8 to 17% GDP of a much bigger GDP per capita. 30 years from now?
The CBO itself says it is not mostly about the baby boomers but rising health costs.
Please take time to put this out. Can we make this national?
Write.
Thanks.

"Iran's dissident soccer players, banned for life."
Now that is grounds for a Revolution. No country (other than the US) would tolerate putting out less then their best Football team during World Cub preliminaries.
"Same as I turn the channel when Pat Buchanan appears on Chris Matthews."
Actually, I love watching Buchanan on Rachel, Hardball or McLaughlin because he's an anti-elitist, anti-neocon, anti-imperial, populist, anti-Zionist, isolationist, protectionist conservative. He's SO much better entertainment then the pro-Republican't, pro-Bushite, blindly pro-Israel conservatives, especially when he is sitting right next to one.
It reminds me that 'Conservatism' in America is simply an unnatural alliance of people whose only common thought is hatred of Democrats.

"The RNC and ABC are still at odds." They sent a letter, and from the ABC web they report
"The letter asks that ABC 'present both sides and offer the opportunity for rebuttal."
Does this mean that the RNC is asking for a return to the Fairness Doctrine?
