PRESCRIPTION FOR RATINGS?.... There's a perception that it's difficult to get Americans, in large numbers, to tune into policy discussions, even important ones. I was curious, then, to see what the ratings were like for the ABC News special this week on health care at the White House.

Apparently, folks tuned in after all.

The ABC News special edition of Primetime "Questions for the President: Prescription for America" drew 4.7 million Total Viewers - last in the time slot but ABC's best 10pm audience in six weeks. NBC's "The Philanthropist" won the time period with 7.4M and CBS' "CSI NY" was second with 7.3M.

ABC's program continued into "Nightline" where it topped NBC's "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" and CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" in fast national data. The program averaged 4.25 million Total Viewers at 11:35pm, to Conan's 3.66 million and Letterman's 3.23 million.

It's possible, of course, that the RNC's incessant whining about the program helped give the special the publicity needed to generate a larger audience, but for an evening discussion on health care policy to draw bigger numbers than Letterman and Conan seems pretty impressive.

Apparently, some far-right blogs are crowing that the ratings weren't higher. All things being equal, though, the numbers suggest there is an audience for substantive policy discussions, which is encouraging.

Now if ABC had just come in as an honest broker instead of a transmitter of RW talking points . . .

There is legitimate criticism of the Obama plan, and pretty much all that criticism comes from the left.

eg: How can you say there are no 'lines in the sand', when you know that reform will be ineffective without a public option?

We really have to shift the debate to one between progressives and the 'center-left'. Right now it's between wingnut-land and Dino's, and that's hurting America.

There is an audience. I just wish there was some substantive policy discussion happening, like one that includes the single payer plan, as well as the other more expensive solutions. I am an obama supporter, but I am underwhelmed with how the stimulus, secrecy, Afghanistan, and healthcare are being framed by the dems and of course disgusted with the MSM treatment of his totally moderate and creeping incrementalism approaches to his positions as something between "socialist Europe" and the second coming of Lenin.

what is this "television" of which you speak? who are the ones who continue to -- as you put it -- "tune in"?

Any reports in, yet, on the ratings for the beginning of the week long Michael Jackson Memorial Marathon over at MSNBC?

Exactly. I can't remember the last time I've watched that noise box. NONE of the programs I remember watching, including "news" can hold a candle to this blog, let alone the greater discourse. HD came to late to save 'em, nobody wants to be lied to in high resolution.

Yes, rightards will crow about the success of a teabag party that draws maybe 200,000, but belittle 5 million. GOP math at work.

Hey, television is still great for watching pro football and baseball! I agree that it's mostly useless for anything else, though I might make an exception for The Daily Show and Rachel Maddow.

4.7 Million watch Obama on Healthcare, but look how many people watch "24". You can't tell me they're not interested in policy debate.

Right, in a country in which over 30 percent are obese, another 40 percent overweight, a country in which 30 percent can't even find the USA on a world map, a country in which more people vote for American Idol than the President of the country, a country that reflects 5 percent of the world population yet uses 25 percent of it's resources, that's called a Pig country by the way, and, as a result, on 4 million tune in to one of the most important issues of this time. Right, another hamburger calls .......

It's not the policy, it's Obama. Without him, the numbers would have been on par with a musical cop drama.
