A DELAYED FOOD FIGHT.... I've only read excerpts of Todd Purdum's Vanity Fair piece on Sarah Palin, but it relies on McCain campaign aides to cast the Alaska governor in a very unflattering light. "They can't quite believe that for two frantic months last fall, caught in a Bermuda Triangle of a campaign, they worked their tails off to try to elect as vice president of the United States someone who, by mid-October, they believed for certain was nowhere near ready for the job, and might never be," the article reports.

The piece seems to have had an immediate impact. Indeed, the article has apparently instigated something of a food fight among some leading figures in the Republican establishment.

A hard-hitting piece on Sarah Palin in the new Vanity Fair has touched off a blistering exchange of insults among high-profile Republicans over last year's GOP ticket -- tearing open fresh wounds about leaks surrounding Palin and revealing for the first time some of the internal wars that paralyzed the campaign in its final days.

Rival factions close to the McCain campaign have been feuding since last fall over Palin, usually waging the battle in the shadows with anonymous quotes. Now, however, some of the most well-known names in Republican politics are going on-the-record with personal attacks and blame-casting.

Shortly after Purdum's Vanity Fair piece was posted online, it got ugly. Bill Kristol, for example, went after Steve Schmidt, McCain's campaign manager. Schmidt responded that Kristol's "management of Dan Quayle's public image as his chief of staff is still something that takes your breath away." Schmidt added that Kristol's allegations about him "rises to the level of a slander" and noted that Kristol is "in the business of ad hominem insults and criticism."

Randy Scheunemann quickly weighed in, taking Kristol's side, and blasting Schmidt's "congenital aversion to the truth."

The back-and-forth continued yesterday, with personal attacks, questioned motives, and increasingly serious allegations.

I expected more of this late last year, when the finger-pointing made more sense. The full-blown intra-party civil war never came to fruition, but it seems there's some pent up hostility among leading figures.

I'm not in a position to say who's telling the truth, who's lying, who's leaking, or who's right. But reading about all of this reinforced one unshakable observation: I'm awfully glad these folks aren't running the country right now.

That's just precious. Now the difference between good and bad Republicans is whether the aversion is congenital.

I'm not in a position to say who's...or who's right.

Ummm, I'd say whoever thought Palin was nowhere near ready for the job and never would be is unquestionably right.

The only thing that would be better is records of Sarah Palin flying to Buenos Aires when Mark Sanford was there.

Sarah Palin isn't, and never will be, qualified for anything but as a target for parody.

The problem for most Republicans is that they've been lying, distorting, and living in an alternative reality so long that they don't know either.

I guess I'll send the DCCC and ActBlue another donation today in honor of the VF article. We need to make sure these folks have to find alternative careers somewhere outside of the US government. I don't just disagree with them; I don't like them. They're not good people. Their core beliefs are deluded. Their thinking is undeveloped, and their loyalties are pathological.

What were they thinking every day when they got up and looked in the mirror? "Gee, let's work hard to mislead the American public into thinking that the people we work for are capable of running the country?"

Revenge is the dish that must be served...

"in the business of ad hominem insults and criticism"

A fine synopsis of republican politics...
Lacking only an awareness of republicans ability to hold grudges and settle scores across years.

Which I think, explains Benen's bemusment and observation:

As it turns out, I expected more of this late last year, when the finger-pointing made more sense. The full-blown intra-party civil war never came to fruition, but it seems there's some pent up hostility among leading figures.

They are Republican political professionals. They are all lying. The fact that they ever entertained the idea that GOP political handlers could prepare Palin (or anyone) for VP in a few weeks like you would cram for a Trigonometry final shows that each and every one of the people involved in this story is a shallow asshole. These noodleheads are all arguing over who has the best recipe for turd sandwich. The lesson here is that turd sandwich sucks. Bill Kristol and co. are still arguing about which garnish makes it taste delicious. Good luck with that!

Obama is to blame. If he had only engaged in personal attacks, the Republican party would have stayed united.

Good article, but there was nothing in it that wasn't already known 6 months ago or more.

Posted by: clonus on July 1, 2009 at 11:08 AM | PERMALINK

I have long maintained that McCain blindsided a sizable chunk of his own campaign staff when he annouced Palin as his running mate. There is no evidence that McCain's people were doing any background work on her or even had anything more than cursory communication with her prior to 1-2 days before she was annouced.

By late summer they had already been in contact with staffs from the other canidates for the job and had gotten to know them well. They had developed strategies for each of them. If other words they put in a lot of leg work only to have all of it go away when McCain announced someone most of them probably never heard of.

The simple method by which McCain selected Palin proves he was unfit for President.

Exactly.

What is really jaw dropping is there are those who would say Sarah had leadership skills. Previous posts better explain this, especially KazooGuy. And I'm clean out of popcorn but don't want to get into the liquor cabinet yet, because even better times are coming.

Looks at the list of PNACers espousing support for Palin. I think it's quite clear the neocons have made her their standard bearer, and it's for all of the same reasons we abhor her: her ignorant, incurious nature makes her easy to control and her tabloid life makes her a media distraction.

She is the perfect candidate for warmongers.

Posted by: doubtful on July 1, 2009 at 11:17 AM | PERMALINK

I read it, and it certainly, ah, takes some of the sparkles off of Palin's political persona.

Also, what ckelly and qwerty said.

I switched from popcorn to raw veggies months ago. No one warned me that Republicans in implosion could be so dangerous to my jeans size.

Zackly. Plus she's belligerent, won't pick her fights and has a vicious streak a mile wide. Like you said, a warmonger's dream.

God could save a lot of heavenly time by sending a group email to Republicans in which S/He opines on which governor should finish his term, which loudmouthed loser should not run for office, etc. Perhaps S/He already does.

Yes, the RepuGs should spend less time checking their various boy-girl-whateveroys g-strings and start checking their G-Mail.

Purdom told Chuck Todd, the reason he didn't use explicit quotes, is because he was writing this for posterity. He wanted people to look back a few years from now and judge the accuracy. He mentioned, that as so many in journalism know, the system does not fall into the neat useage of quoted on the record sources.

Don't know who's lying, huh. That one's easy. When both sides of an internal GOP dispute accuse the other side of lying--they're both being truthful and accurate.

A great line from the Vanity Fair article: "...[Sarah Palin] has the good fortune to have traction within a political party...whose rank and file often demands qualities other than knowledge, experience, and an understanding that facts are, as John Adams said, stubborn things."

So true.

Is GAGUT anything like ZALGO?

Posted by: Kreniigh on July 1, 2009 at 12:35 PM | PERMALINK

"Is GAGUT anything like ZALGO?"

GAGUT is not ZALGO, but a theorem, a proven truth that is undisputable which says that GOD and everything is conserved. Any human being can challenge GAGUT. Any reader that understands GAGUT would further understand that GAGUT is the absolute truth about everything. History has shown that discoveries like GAGUT have difficulties being accepted. The Royal Society, the oldest science society in Europe, for example can understand the urgent need to get GAGUT into the classrooms of all education institutions globally. Sir Isaac Newton, the first president (or one of the first presidents) of the Royal Society, badly needed the Royal Society to publish his revolutionary discoveries because those discoveries contradicted the prevailing scientific understanding during the time. The Royal Society and Sir Isaac Newton were seriously challenged and disliked by the distinguished scientists of the day, as a result of that publication of Newton's discovery. However The Royal Society along with Sir Isaac Newton were celebrated eventually when Newton's discoveries were understood to be correct. Michael Faraday and James Maxwell had a similar experience like Newton during their discovery of electromagnetism. They were also celebrated eventually, when the public at large began understanding electromagnetism. One can cite many similar examples of challenges encountered by institutions like the Royal Society during the process of introducing revolutionary ideas and discoveries into the classrooms and society at large. GAGUT has unified the discoveries of Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Gauss, Einstein and others, and therefore has to be righteous and correct on the basis of the righteousness and correctness of the discoveries of Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Gauss, Einstein and others. The Royal Society, other societies as well as the media therefore can help introduce GAGUT into classrooms, just like it was accomplished with the discoveries of Newton and others. The Royal Society, other societies as well as the media and anyone else can also challenge GAGUT if necessary as GAGUT is offering a thousand dollars to any human being that can disprove GAGUT. If however there are no such challenges to GAGUT, CBS and other media can do special shows on GAGUT urgently.
