BACHMANN PUSHES HER LUCK WITH GOP COLLEAGUES.... Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.) bizarre obsession with the national census -- she's said she's prepared to break the law and not answer census questions -- has become so annoying, some of her far-right Republican colleagues in the House have seen enough.
David Weigel reports today that Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.), and John Mica (R-Fla) -- three conservatives on the House Census Oversight Subcommittee -- issued a statement today, emphasizing "how important it is for every individual to fill out their census forms," and explaining why Bachmann is backwards.
"Every elected representative in this country should feel a responsibility to encourage full participation in the census. To do otherwise is to advocate for a smaller share of federal funding for our constituents. Boycotting the constitutionally-mandated census is illogical, illegal and not in the best interest of our country.
"The unfortunate irony is that Ms. Bachmann's boycott only increases the likelihood that ACORN-recruited census takers will be dispatched to her constituents' homes. Anyone who completes and returns their census form will remove any need for a census taker to visit their residence.
"Furthermore, a boycott opens the door for partisans to statistically adjust census results. The partisan manipulation of census data would irreparably transform the census from being the baseline of our entire statistical system into a tool used to wield political power in Washington."
As Weigel noted, "You don't usually hear Republicans criticizing a fellow member in such a public and official capacity." Quite right. Given the language in this statement -- "illogical, illegal and not in the best interest of our country" -- it was a pretty striking rebuke from three far-right Republicans to another.
And as long as we're on the subject, Bachmann talked to Sean Hannity on Fox News last night about her anti-census crusade, and returned to one of her favorite arguments: "Sean, you know the one question they don't ask? They [don't] ask, 'are you an American citizen?' ... [T]hey could at least ask if we're an American citizen? They don't bother to ask for that. That's why I think people need to read this census for themselves. If you go to my website, michelebachmann, you can read it."
Good idea. If you take Bachmann's advice, visit her website, and read the census, you find the American Community Survey put together by the Census Bureau. Question #7 reads: "Where was this person born?" Question #8 reads, "Is this person a citizen of the United States?"
Bachmann probably should have noticed this before repeatedly going on national television, pleading with people to read the census questions, and railing against the absence of a question that's already there.

Apparently, being a 'Merican, sets a higher standard and status than, merely, being an US citizen. Must be the language difference.

i don't know - is it wrong that part of me doesn't want her to ever lose reelection?

"Is this person of sound mind?"
"Does this person have any mental deficincies?"
Those are the questions that should be put on the census...
Michelle Bachmann, "No and yes, many."

Oh, don't you listen to those guys, Michelle! What do they know? Does Hannity have them on? Of course not! You should definitely follow your inner voice (or voices).
Everyone who thinks Michelle is a great American should resolutely refuse to fill out their census forms. Stick it to the man! Tell all your friends.

In any event, I'm confident Hannity will correct Bachmann's inaccurate statements regarding the census questions on his show today.

"is it wrong that part of me doesn't want her to ever lose reelection?"
No. She is an endless source of amusement. And she can't actually do much damage in the House. Now if she runs for the Senate, it's a different story.

olbermann had an interesting observation last night:
if bachman can influence enough people in MN to not answer census forms, the state could lose a house seat. and the house seat most likely to be eliminated is bachman's.

The ACS isn't actually the Census, not that it matters to Bachmann, who is intentionally spreading FUD about it all.

The census short form doesn't include the citizenship question, presumably that's what she means.

My question is, who are the cretins who keep electing this absolute nut? After listening to these incoherent ramblings of an obviously disturbed individual, they go in and pull the lever for her on Election Day? Remind me to never visit Minnesota while this mental case is still a Representative of that forsaken, pathetic State.

Jesus Christ she is so fucking stupid.
Anyone have any insight onto her district? I mean, who votes for this piece of work?

What's even worse about Rep. Bachmann is that she obviously hasn't even read the Constitution. The census (it's called "Enumeration" in Art. 1, Sec. 2) is to count "persons." A count of citizens isn't mentioned anywhere.
The purpose of the counting of persons is to allocate Representatives and taxes.
So, the Framers of the Constitution didn't instruct the census to count only citizens, but explicitly instructed a count of persons.

She is at hazard to be redistricted out anyway; her district presently combines some Twin Cities suburbs with St. Cloud, and is vulnerable to be lost. St. Cloud would keep the seat, and the suburbs would be combined with a more blue Twin Cities seat.

Really? Why? No one on TeeVee is going to call her on it, as evidently they didn't. So why shouldn't she say whatever is convenient for her, irrespective of whether it's true? There are no downsides to telling blatant lies if you're a Republican nutbar on TeeVee, so why on earth should she give a hoot what the thing actually asks?

At a certain point you really have to wonder about the constituency that returns this person to office. Something in the water supply?

Twenty-eight pages. Sean, you know the one question they don’t ask? They don’t ask, “are you an American citizen?”
Steve left out the part in bold, but it is quoted at the Think Progress link. She is clearly referring to the long form.

I saw this on a TV news show last night--Minnesota may well lose a congressional seat after the 2010 census and the resulting reapportionment. Here's a Minnesota congressperson urging people in her district not to cooperate with the census . . .
You see where this is going? :)

I've heard that over the course of ten years, each person that refuses to submit a census form costs his/her community upward of $3,000. If she wants to see affluent white females underrepresented in the allocation of resources and influence over the next decade, let her at it.

"... and that's when the C.H.U.D.S., er I mean ACORN, came at me."
They just can't resist the fearmongering. LOL.

Micah's not really "far right". He's kind of an idiot, and he doesn't represent his district very well, but the local liberal radio host, Jim Philips endorsed him. He was the ONLY Republican Philips endorsed. He's not quite as "far right" as you would describe. A terrible rep, sure. I like to make the distinction because it gets my goat when someone calls a moderate Dem "far left". I use the "far" modifier sparingly, like for Buchanan.

I'd be delighted if all Republicans nation-wide refused to answer the census. That would mean that GOP-majority districts, counties, cities, and states would all lose representation and influence. The South's share of representation in Congress would shrink to match that of the upper plains states.
They'd also get considerably less of the federal largess they so despise, leaving more for Democrats and other relatively sane people. That should make every one happy.
Sounds great to me. I think there could be a huge number of unintended benefits for the nation in Bachmann's insanity. It's unfortunate that more Republicans aren't quite stupid enough to follow her lead, despite all of Fox's prompting.

This lady makes me wonder if the people who swear to seeing UFO's is true! Who is this thing (Michelle)?
BTW, I wonder if she is 'wearing the American Flag pen?'
Posted by: annjell on July 1, 2009 at 11:07 PM | PERMALINK
Oh come on. She was clearly right.
The census does not ask "Are you an American citizen." It asks "Are you a citizen of the United States." Totally different. /snark
As a matter of, though, being a citizen of the United States of America is what they SHOULD be after. People from the North Pole to the tip of Tierra del Fuego can say they are "American." North American, Central American, South American.
How'd you like THAT, Michelle. Huh? All those illegals from El Salvador ARE American, beeeatch.

A bit of clarification about Bachmann: she isn't so much stupid as she is certifiably insane. Well, I *say* certifiably, since I haven't actually certified her personally or seen evidence of her being certified by someone else, but she certainly plays the part.
As I've observed elsewhere, a Minneapolis native with whom I work says that the district Bachmann represents is as conservative as she is, so perhaps this is an example of a district getting precisely the representation it deserves.
