EIGHT MONTHS LATER.... CBS News published an item late yesterday, pointing to a series of internal emails sent within the McCain-Palin campaign three weeks before Election Day. Their source is probably more interesting than their content.

At the time, the issue was reports in October about Sarah Palin's husband's membership in an Alaskan political party that supports secession from the United States. The governor was working a ropeline when someone said something about this, prompting the VP nominee to demand that the campaign address the questions.

Leading campaign officials balked, choosing instead to focus their attention on the final Obama-McCain debate, and hoping to blow off questions regarding Palin's husband's patriotism. The more her demands went unmet, the angrier Palin became, prompting one email in which she tried to fudge some details to the campaign's own staff. This didn't go over well.

Clearly irritated by what he saw as Palin's attempt to mislead her own campaign and apparently determined to demonstrate that the ultimate authority rested with him, Schmidt put the matter to rest once and for all with a longer response to everyone in the e-mail chain.

"Secession," he wrote. "It is their entire reason for existence. A cursory examination of the website shows that the party exists for the purpose of seceding from the union. That is the stated goal on the front page of the web site. Our records indicate that todd was a member for seven years. If this is incorrect then we need to understand the discrepancy. The statement you are suggesting be released would be innaccurate [sic]. The innaccuracy [sic] would bring greater media attention to this matter and be a distraction. According to your staff there have been no media inquiries into this and you received no questions about it during your interviews. If you are asked about it you should smile and say many alaskans who love their country join the party because it speeks [sic] to a tradition of political independence. Todd loves his country

We will not put out a statement and inflame this and create a situation where john has to adress this."

Schmidt's rebuttal to Palin's suggestion that reporters had asked her about the issue was particularly blunt in that it implicitly questioned her truthfulness. Furthermore, his unwillingness to budge an inch on the matter was a remarkable assertion of his power to pull rank over the candidate herself.

OK, so the McCain-Palin campaign was something of a train wreck. This is further evidence, but it's hardly shocking.

The more interesting point, though, especially in light of this week's other drama/backbiting, is that eight months later, these folks are still fighting amongst themselves. After all, someone had to leak these emails to CBS News, and that someone no doubt realized the messages would make Palin look bad.

It's tempting to think this food fight would have ended quite a while ago. And yet, here we are.

I read that thing earlier this morning. My favorite quote from the article was from Schmidt was :
Reached on his cell phone on Wednesday, Schmidt declined to comment on the e-mail exchange. "I was proud to work for the McCain-Palin ticket," he said. "We did our best in an extraordinarily difficult year. I wish that all this stuff could all be left in the past where it belongs because Barack Obama won the election and he's President of the United States. It's all over, it's in the past."

You could have fooled me- with all the airtime and TEEVEE exposure from Mcain and Palin you would think they are still campaigning. Why oh why Steveie won't they STFU and go away.

One hopes these guys will keep the Village Press Corpse paying attention to this over the next three years, so that when the Whackadoodle Far Radical Wrong nominates Sarah Bimbette for President, the Press Corpse will do their job of pointing out that this whackjob is never going to be ready to be anything but a failed small town beauty queen with an overinflated opinion of herself.

Should read: Leading campaign officials balked, choosing instead to focus their attention on the final Obama-McCain debate, and hoping to blow off questions regarding Palin's husband's lack of patriotism.

No, the more interesting point is that eight months later, the liberal MSM is still throwing dirt at Governess Palin.

Boy, that's got to make the "hard hitting interviewers" cringe. I mean Wolf Blitzer was embarrassed that the MSM didn't pay enough attention to the National Inquirer's rumors about John Edwards. But they sure had a laser beam focus on Obama's lapel and preacher.

Posted by: Danp on July 2, 2009 at 10:03 AM | PERMALINK

Just imagine if Obama's wife had been a member of that secessionist group for 7 minutes, much less seven years. She was labeled as grossly unpatriotic for her off-comment that "for the first time in her life she ws proud of her country".

This is a very sick country...

'speeks'???

I am gonna assume that was his.

The more chilling aspect of this is Todd himself. Purdom told Chuck Todd that Todd is St Sarah's main advisor or to be more precise, the only political advisor she relies upon. So, a man who belonged, for years, to a party which wishes to secede from the US, had a shot to move to DC and increase his power.

Not bad advice, and not too far off from what the AIP is about. AIP members are basically Republicans who prefer a more direct approach to killing government.

What steviio said ... can you imagine. I don't recall any headlines that Sarah was pallin' around with secessionists.Conveniently ignored by the patriotic librul media...after all she is a white girl with big hooters.

Posted by: John R on July 2, 2009 at 10:14 AM | PERMALINK

I wish Sarah had been more independent. A series of news releases on any variety of topics from the VP campaign could have buried the Joe-the-Plumber schtick, among other entities...

Posted by: Bob Johnson on July 2, 2009 at 10:17 AM | PERMALINK

If the Palins are so proud of their state's "tradition of political independence," why should they be ashamed/embarrassed of their membership in a secessionist group?

Yes, it's a rhetorical question. But it seems like we see this all the time, with the ultra-secretive Federalist Society, the C Street Project, and a hundred other whackdoodle wingnut organizations. If the neocons are truly convinced their way is best and that 99.9% of Americans secretly agree with them (the remaining .1% being unborn fetuses), one would think they'd loudly and proudly flaunt their affiliations with these groups. Instead, they do everything in their power to keep the existence of such groups secret, as well as hide their personal involvement in them.

However, I'm one of those people who tries to use logic to understand these things, so what do I know.

reason #3,476 that i thank god, allah, jewish god, tom cruise -- all of them -- for obama having won.

then i can't believe that it was even as close as it was. imagine the nightmarish world we would inhabit had these inbred knuckle-draggers won. my god.

Posted by: ahoy polloi on July 2, 2009 at 10:21 AM | PERMALINK

Really, the most embarassing part of the CBS story is that Joe the Plumber was considered to be the Republicans' "secret weapon." I also like how Sarah's explanation for the party membership was that Todd was too stupid to fill out a voter registration form.

Al, thanks for showing what a total reich-wing suck up you are. The 'liberal' MSM?? You are a clueless bastard, aren't you. Or you like to spew Orwellian/Rovian/Opposite Day talking points. Well, you have fooled us all, good job little man. What we need is MORE Murdoch consolidation of the media, more Moonie papers, more reich-wing corporatists like Disney, G.E., Viaacom, AOL-Time-Warner, and Sumner Redstone. Hey Allie boy, care to guess which political party these individuals and corporations support to the tune of tens of millions per election cycle? Your b.s. talking points are tired and worn, and only the truly uninformed and deluded are listening to the crap you spew. Do us all a favor and either get a clue, or STFU.

As so well noted, St Sarah can, indeed, see Russia from her front porch. Perhaps, that is where she spotted the illegitimate son of Grigori Rasputin crossing over into Alaska while running a dog sled. It became love at first sighting of her moose rifle. Todd does appear to take much from his father.

The part that bothers me the most about those emails is that Schmidt CLEARY STATED referring to Todd association with the AIP: “According to your staff there have been no media inquiries into this and you received no questions about it during your interviews.”

That right there makes me want to puke. Simply because this was around the same time that Palin was saying that Obama pals around with terrorists.. and was pushing the meme that he and his wife hated America because of their associations.
The media didn’t call her out on her hypocrisy. They didn’t even bother to look more into it. And apparently I wasn’t the only one who noticed this… Schmidt McCain’s campaign manager did too!
I felt the same anger that I felt back then when I read that part of the emails.

Posted by: LeAnn on July 2, 2009 at 10:59 AM | PERMALINK

The reason this is coming out now is because of the polls putting Palin at the head of the delinquent class of Republicans interested in running in 2012.

Someone is trying to save the Republican party in spite of itself. Let's hope the effort is in vain, and given the rate at which the GOP is shedding moderates, I think it will be.

Any sane person looks at that email and thinks the Governor is an unhinged neophyte. The increasingly ideological puritans in the GOP base look at that and gush about Palin's sparkles and her stated ability to out-jog President Obama.

Posted by: doubtful on July 2, 2009 at 11:01 AM | PERMALINK

Hey its not Palin's fault that she's a trainwreck; Its McCain's for making her a national trainwreck. Its no surprise that the party, that has decided to give up on honestly making its case, has chosen a pathological liar to lead it. She even tells bald-faced lies to the people that are trying to get her what she wants. 'I know the front page of the site says seccsionist, but its not seccessionist.' riiiight and bears use bidets.

Hey Al, a friendly piece of advice: A decent concern troll either points to some contradiction or omission on the side s/he patrols or, better still, is able to come up with a witty or snarky comment.

To regurgitate standard talking points just bores everybody to death and frankly is a waste of bandwidth. If you can't do better than your last few posts then you might consider finding yourself an alternative hobby.

LeAnn beat me to it. Steve, the most interesting point in the article is: "According to your staff there have been no media inquiries into this and you received no questions about it during your interviews." The husband and main political adviser of the 2008 Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States of America was a card carrying member of a group espousing treason to the United States of America...and the MSM didn't have a damn thing to say about it.

Second most interesting thing: the McCain campaign suggests substituting a softer lie for the bigger lie proposed by Palin. Scumbags and dingbats all the way down.

Posted by: Todd B. on July 2, 2009 at 11:56 AM | PERMALINK

please pass the popcorn....

I think the most interesting point is that despite 8 years of Bush/Cheney and 18 months of McCain/Palin campaign malpractice, they STILL got 46% of the vote!!!!

Why?

Dig Baby, Dig ;)

Posted by: Patrick on July 2, 2009 at 12:39 PM | PERMALINK

And most important, all the "patriotic" Republican breast-beaters (and denigraters of the rest-of-us) supported McCain-Palin without a twinge of ironic discomfort over Todd Palin's unpatriotic involvement (keep reminded conservatives over and over than secession is unpatriotic!)

I'm with LeAnn and Todd.

This was ALL OVER the Internets. HOW could the MSM ignore it, while questioning Michelle Obama's love of America over and over and over.

The MSM has to look itself in the face today and ask the same question.
