A PATTERN EMERGES.... Time's Joe Klein notices that a certain former U.N. ambassador has a preoccupation with bombing a certain Middle Eastern country, and manages to keep finding major newspapers to publish his thoughts on the subject.
In the Washington Post today, screw-loose wingnut extraordinaire John Bolton has a column in which he advocates an Israeli strike against Iran. This would be shocking, except that...
On June 26, Bolton had an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times in which he advocated bombing Iran. And, well, er...
On June 12, he had an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal in which he advocated bombing Iran.
And that's just three op-eds in three weeks. We could go back a little further and find Bolton -- in op-eds, on Fox News -- advocating military attacks on Iran for years.
Indeed, as Adam Serwer noted, given Bolton's incessant rhetoric on the subject, "it's hard to take seriously his proposal that now is actually the opportune moment to bomb Iran."
I'd just add that it's interesting to consider the competing conservative messages on Iran. For the better part of June, the line was that the United States needed to do more to support Iranians. What we really needed to do, neocons said, was speak up and let the Iranian people know we're on their side. And yet, here's Bolton, arguing again that the one thing that's really needed is a bombing campaign on Iran.
Spencer Ackerman suggests there's a problem with Bolton's approach.
Yes, the Israeli bombs will only kill the bad Iranians. When patriotic Iranians of the opposition see Israeli F-16s raining death from above on Iranian targets, Bolton actually expects them to think, "Boom shack-a-lacka! Here come our Israeli liberators! Let them bomb whatever they like, since even though Mir Hussein Moussavi supports a nuclear program as part of a consensus opinion, I believe Israeli propaganda that says it has our best interests at heart! That'll show Mahmoud Ahmadinejad! Did you hear that, Aunt Marjam? Aunt Marjam...?"
If there's one thing that a Bush official should understand, it's that people under attack from a foreign enemy don't rush to embrace their more moderate leaders.
Joe Klein described Bolton as "dangerous and demented." That may seem harsh, but under the circumstances, it also seems appropriate.

joe klein dug himself a very, very deep hole in the early bush years, but another couple years like this and i might be willing to declare his probationary period over and welcome him to the ranks of the acceptable-to-read.

An over-inflated sense of self-importance, and our major media want to offer such drivel for public consumption? Who the fools fool? -Kevo

Little steps, little steps. At least Bolton is no longer talking about lopping off the top 10 floors of the UN.

Based on the post below about the Washington Post selling access we have to ask if Bolton (or his neo-con friends) are paying newspapers to print his OP-Eds. Anybody know?

Well they're starting to walk back Michele No-Census Bachman, they need to walk this manaic all the way back and escort him into a padded cell.

Movement conservatism's most lasting achievement is the mainstreaming of the insane.

A Middle Eastern war would be immensely profitable for the military-industrial-petroleum complex. That's the so-called "neoconservative" agenda.

I suspect Bolton blames Iran for his loss of precious bodily fluids. Apparently, his, um, stiffening of resolve after invading Iraq was insufficient.

Harsh? If anything, Klein's characterization of Bolton is understated. He is pathologically insane.

After Michele Bachman is eventually defeated, sounds increasingly like Op-ed page editor of a major American newspaper would be a natural next step on her career path.

Someone call Steve Clemons and tell him that somehow John Bolton made it to UN ambassador, despite the fact that his nomination never made it out of committee....

ScottW, Thanks for the info. BTW, I wouldn't have bought his book anyway, let alone, checked it out from the library.

Dropping a poisonous gasbag on Iran would violate the Geneva Conventions. :(

No, these three op-ed were merely three DIFFERENT opportunities to bomb Iran. They just happened to all meet those same critical conditions:
1) The sun came up in the east;
2) The Iranian government was presominently Muslim;
3) The day ended in a "y".
Now, if any of those three things AREN'T true, bolton thinks we shouldn't bomb.

Joe Klein described Bolton as "dangerous and demented." That may seem harsh...
No, harsh is urging, pleading, and cheering the wanton bombing and resulting death and destruction of other peoples.

it aint bolton's fault -- he has been completely indoctrinated by years at the knee and kissing the ass of jessie helms -- who, praise all the gods, is deader'n a doornail and rotting in hell.
unfortunately, helms' demonic spirit is in possession of bolton's pea brain...

Calling Bolton "demented" is harsh? HARSH???? John Bolton is a goddamn loon.

Well, who is Bolton affiliated with? Who's pushing this line?
AEI, JINSA, PNAC (in the old days).
In the runup to the Iraq invasion, all the newspapers, all over the US, were regularly featuring AEI hacks.
Why?

I can understand the knee jerk hatred of Bolton by the left - he after all advocates killing our sworn enemies while the left, ala the Brits and French leading up to WW2 think that if we just talk all will be hunky dory.
So how is Ogabe's so-called "smart diplomacy" working out for you guys????

A hell of a lot better than Bushco's armed missionaries for western democracy ever did.
What I find extra plus funny about this is that after Obama's Cairo speech we had the revolt in Iran. And you know damn well that if a Republican president had made such a speech in Cairo and this event had taken place in Iran a few weeks later, well the right wing noise machine would be writing his hiography as we speak, he would be the second coming of Christ, the liberator of mankind. So excuse me if I find the right of center condemnations of Obama ringing a wee bit hollow, he is doing the inevitable clean up after an 8 year debauched amature hour on the international scene.
So yeah, it's working out great numbnut, Go Obama!

More than the IAEA or UN, or even Gulf War I, the Israeli bombing of Iraq's nuclear reactor at Osirak prevented Saddam from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Bolton, a clear and logical thinker in the foreign policy arena, realizes this. The U.S. needs more minds like Bolton to tackle the important foreign policy issues of today.

Obama is not opposed to bombing Iran. The difference between him and Bolton is simply a disagreement about conditions and timing. According to what Candidate Obama said, if his diplomatic initiatives don't work he'll bomb Iran to prevent their acquiring nuclear weapons. His language in his AP interview was a little less clear, but there is no evidence that he has changed his mind.

First we have the WaPo claiming that it really wasn't trying to do a K St. type project when it offered to sell access and now we have them giving even more space to one of the Reich wingers' most demented representatives. Methinks that these guys have shown their true colors and they are not Red, White and Blue.
Reading Ron Byers' post makes me wonder if he hasn't hit the nail right squarely. After all, it's the Reich wing where all the money is, AIPAC, the military/industrial complex and all that. They would be glad to finance a few op-eds pushing their agenda at $250,000 a shot. They spend that much on booze in a weekend.

I would like to advocate a preemptive strike on John Bolton.

John Bolton left the fancy Georgetown restaurant. As he rounded the corner into the parking lot, three men wearing ski masks grabbed him, threw him roughly into the back of a delivery van, and slammed the door shut.
The tallest of the masked men drew a small leather case from inside his jacket, while the other two assailants duct-taped Bolton's hands and feet to a plastic chair. Bolton furiously growled, "You bastards won't get away with this! You'll spend the rest of your lives in a Federal prison! I'll have my Air Force friends conduct an air strike against your houses! I'll..." But then he went silent and his eyes grew big and round and full of fear as the tall man opened the case and drew out a gleaming straight razor. He said, "Mr. Bolton, I really think you should stop talking and moving around. This razor is as sharp as a surgeon's scalpel."
As the other two kidnappers held Bolton's head in a tight grip, the tall kidnapper moved the straight razor closer and closer to his face. Suddenly, with a swift motion, he shaved off Bolton's "mustache." Bolton's eyes rolled back in his head and he fainted. But instead of just falling to the floor and lying there, the "mustache" let out a high-pitched shriek and attempted to wriggle away. One of the other agents let go of Bolton's head, grabbed a chloroform-soaked rag, seized the "mustache," and sealed it in a glass jar full of formaldehyde.
Bolton began to shake his head and talk. At first his voice was so low and quiet he could barely be heard. "Thank God," said Bolton, "oh, thank God you fellows freed me from that, that horrible thing."
The tall man asked, "What in Hell was it?"
Bolton said, "It was a parasitical space alien from a cold, hostile outer planet! It controlled my mind with some kind of telepathic link. It made me do terrible things! I couldn't help myself!"
"What did it want?"
"It, they, wanted a warm planet, where their race could thrive. But they knew that we humans would not allow them to reshape our planet to their needs. We'd fight them off. So they resorted to trickery. By attaching themselves to certain humans and forcing them to foment irrational, self-destructive intra-species violence, they hoped we humans would wipe ourselves out, and then they could move in and take over our planet."
"Diabolical! Are you the only human whom these aliens possessed?"
"Far from it! They particularly sought to attach themselves to policemen, who can walk around openly carrying weapons. They also control the ruling council of Iran, and the leadership of Al Qaida. But the supreme commander of their interplanetary expeditionary force calls himself 'Geraldo'."
