THE ORIGINAL KING OF IRONY STRIKES AGAIN.... Karl Rove cracks me up. Consider what he told Fox News this morning:

"This White House has carried pre-packaged, organized, controlled, scripted events to a new height, and they're getting away with things that in any previous White House, the media would have eviscerated the press secretary and the White House for it."

As a substantive matter, Rove was criticizing the president's forum in Virginia yesterday on health care policy. Amanda Terkel contacted the White House about the logistics of the event, and it turns out, Rove's criticism is just factually wrong.

But it takes an extraordinary amount of chutzpah for Karl Rove to complain about anyone hosting "pre-packaged, organized, controlled, scripted events."

Perhaps Rove doesn't remember the "Bubble Boy" policies used by Bush White House, but these folks quite literally wrote the book on "pre-packaged, organized, controlled, scripted events." We're talking about a White House that screened public audiences at public events based on bumper stickers and lapel pins. We're talking about a White House that would limit ticket distribution to presidential events to local Republican Parties, and then still require "loyalty oaths" to get a ticket. We're talking about a White House that would literally rehearse events in advance to make sure attendees said the right things to the president.

We're talking about the gang that put together an official White House "Presidential Advance Manual," which mandated that only those identified as "extremely supportive of the administration" can be seated between the stage and the camera platform, and that organizers designate "a protest area preferably not in view of the event site or motorcade route."

And Rove wants us to believe the Obama White House "has carried pre-packaged, organized, controlled, scripted events to a new height"? Are you kidding me?

It's a reminder that Rove really is the Original King of Irony. After all, this is the same Rove who believes President Obama

* will make terrorist recruiting easier by banning torture;

* is guilty of using hardball political tactics;

* looks at every policy issue "from a political perspective."

About a year ago, Rove accused the New York Times of having "outed a CIA agent," which "obviously puts the CIA agent in danger." Rove added that disclosing the name of a CIA operative represents "a very callous view about our nation's security and interests." It was, at the time, one of the most ironic things I'd ever heard.

Apparently, it was just a sign of things to come.

Steve, like a lot of people you forgot the White House also paid OP-ed writers for coverage (Armstrong Williams still has a job by the way) and sent out packaged bits from to be used as "local" news reports.

Karl Rove should live in perpetuity as a wooded bobble head on the back dash of a million automobiles! Such a place is very diserving for such a clownish figure.

Karl is now a turd with no potential of blossoming anytime soon! -Kevo

Remember the scene in "Deliverance" when Ned Beatty was sexually humiliated by the local hillbillies? That's what someone needs to do to Karl Rove. Strip him down, grease him up, and stick a broomstick up his ass.

It's not just Rove, but the Village as well. Personally, I wouldn't mind if they had everyone write questions ahead of time, chose the most important ones, and gave scripted, detailed answers. When I watch these events, I want info, not entertaining surprises, and certainly not silly questions about diamonds or pearls.

Crack up to your heart's content.

The White House press corps isn't.

Posted by: Matt on July 2, 2009 at 3:10 PM | PERMALINK

Karl Rove is still alive? I thought the rock he lived under was accidently crushed by Cheney's wheel chair as he was taking it for a "spin" around one of his former undisclosed locations. Boy, just shows you how wrong a rumor can be. Poop....

Posted by: stevio on July 2, 2009 at 3:11 PM | PERMALINK

It seems that whenever Ronald Dumbsfeld climbs from under his rock there's a group there to heckel and shame him. Where is the group for Rove

John Bolton, Karl Rove. Steve are you pining away for the good old days of the Bush administration. I would love for us to spend more time talking about that event in Virginia and less time talking about Fox's Original King of Irony. Most of us learned a long time ago that if Karl Rove complains about something, you can bet your bottom dollar he is doing it. Like Newt Gingrich hectoring Bill Clinton about marital fidelity you can bet your bottom dollar if Karl Rove is complaining about the administration controlling an event that he actually controlled on or more similar events in exactly the ways he is describing.

Irony? In my neck of the woods we call it LYING.

Posted by: SYSPROG on July 2, 2009 at 3:20 PM | PERMALINK

It's been fairly obvious for some time that Rover is simply playing back all the criticisms of Bush that bothered him over the years. It's the "I know you are, but what am I?" theory of politics. Sadly, by letting it bother you, you're playing right into his script.

Not to mention all the retired generals and people in the defense industry the Bush White House recruited and then sent out to various news outlets as "experts" to sell the Iraq war.

Posted by: about time on July 2, 2009 at 3:25 PM | PERMALINK

It's not irony or chutzpah. Just flat-out, bare-faced dishonesty. Period.

Posted by: MattF on July 2, 2009 at 3:40 PM | PERMALINK

Projection, people, projection. Accusing others of the things you fear deep down that you, yourself are guilty of.

That's what the right wing is all about.

Learn it. Know it. Live it.

Posted by: Scott Mercer on July 2, 2009 at 3:41 PM | PERMALINK

What Rove has been doing since leaving office is essentially the equivalent of OJ writing "If I Did It", except in live form. He's able to get so detailed in every facet because he's done it all.

Posted by: Chicago Lib on July 2, 2009 at 3:41 PM | PERMALINK

and it turns out, Rove's criticism is just factually wrong.

That's why he's paid the big bucks and appears so often on Fox News. But I think he knows what he's doing.

Posted by: qwerty on July 2, 2009 at 3:41 PM | PERMALINK

After all, this is the same Rove who believes President Obama..

If he actually believed it, it wouldn't be lying. And we know he is lying.

Posted by: martin on July 2, 2009 at 3:44 PM | PERMALINK

Wouldn't it just save time to have a post every day entitled "Karl Rove is a lying sack of sh*t"?

King of Irony? C'mon... Rove is not even Alanis Morrisette "ironic." He says exactly what you expect him to say in the most reliably simple hacktacular way.

In other breaking news... water: still wet.

Posted by: Django on July 2, 2009 at 3:45 PM | PERMALINK

Exposing an American spy not only endangers that spy but also endangers anyone they had any contact with in another nation, it is an act of treason and we are still waiting for charges to be filed.

I hope people will remember that the MSM has been just as culpable in the run up to Iraq and the influence peddling in Washington that has destroyed our economy, when they are grabbing their pitchforks and torches

Posted by: Their Head on a Pike on July 2, 2009 at 3:54 PM | PERMALINK

Karl Rove is "ironic" the same way Rowdy Roddy Piper used to be ironic when he'd accuse Hulk Hogan of bringing a foreign object in the ring or hiding some other bit of rulebreaking from the ref.

He's lying. He KNOWS he's lying. And HE knows WE know he's lying. AND HE LOVES IT. HE revels in getting away with some of the most vile, evil acts ever pereptrated under the guise of patriotism. He LUUUUVS getting liberals' panties in a bunch; that's what he thinks about at night, as opposed to the thousands (millions?) of deaths he's complicit in causing. He's rilin' up those liberals who wouldn't talk to him in college, that's all that matters to this egomaniacal sadistic sac o' crap.

To call it "irony" is an insult to irony. It's HYPOCRISY. It's also proof that there's no God. A just and virtuous Lord would never have let him draw first breath upon leaving his mother's rancid cooter.

You're also talking about the administration that attached critical image points to the arrangement of one's shirtsleeves, such as the suggestion to the ill-fated "Brownie" that he roll up his shirtsleeves while about the business of derailing aid for New Orleans, so as to appear more workmanlike. Ditto the request to all men in the front row at the speech Bush delivered at the foot of the Statue of Liberty - please remove your ties and roll up your shirtsleeves, so as to appear more like salt-of-the-earth L.L. Bean working stiffs.

Two words: willful ignorance. @slappy, you've got it. Of course he knows he's lying, and if I didn't know any better that, and the fact that he works us liberals up into a lather every time he lies, gets him off. If you know what I mean.

Karl Rove LIED?

Next thing you know, dogs will start to bark and cats will meow, and water will be wet.

Surprise! Surprise!

Posted by: nikto on July 2, 2009 at 4:14 PM | PERMALINK

"Irony?" Why are you providing cover for lying liars again, Mr. Benen? Will you please drop the junior Broder act and stop excusing blatant falsehoods and treasonous behavior? At the least you're muddying the language, reinforcing one of modern conservatism's most destructive and degraded projects (and there are so many from the boys who destroy). So go on, spit it out - LIAR. There - doesn't that feel better? Say it again - LIAR. Liar. Rove is a liar. Every word he says, until proven otherwise, must be assumed a lie. Stop carrying these reptiles' water.

All three people Obama picked to asked questions worked for either the DNC or for a lobbying group advocating public health care reform.

Of course this was a set-up.

The big question is: why didn't the employers for these three people give them better health care benefits?

I see nothing surprising with Rove making these accusations. It is classic Rovian politics. Take something that you have done and claim that your opponent is doing it. The discussion then becomes about their "transgressions" rather than your own.

Is not the press just as guilty for accepting these as answers for years??

Helen Thomas just recently took Gibbs to task about screening town meetings, now that her White House access is not threatened she feels brave?

Rove has mastered preaching to the choir. His comments are meant to distract the public's attention, to obfuscate the issue. His party is the party of Lee Atwater and Willie Horton. Having lost his grip on the levers of propaganda his only option now is to cry wolf and hope that everyone has the attention span of a flea.

Good afternoon. Can I just say few warm words ;) It's so nice here, good atmosphere, well done :). Help me! Could you help me find sites on the: Dangerous power g3 paintball guns. I found only this - paintball gun and accessory. Airsoft and paintball are pretty similar sports, and they can be paintball guns need the barrel regularly cleaned, although that is relatively simple. Paintball gun is a more commonly searched term than paintball marker, and the this promotes the idea that paintball guns and markers are just toys. Thank you very much .
