MAKING SANFORD LOOK SOUND AND REASONABLE BY COMPARISON.... Sarah Palin's decision to resign is difficult to understand, but nearly as interesting as the announcement was the way in which it was made. Or, put another way, have you seen the speech?

Everything about this was hopelessly bizarre. The speech was written by an amateur and delivered by an amateur. It was rambling, petty, and defensive -- for no apparent reason. Palin didn't deliver an announcement so much as she rambled on for about 20 minutes.

And if you watch all the way to the very end of Part II, you'll notice that Palin wasn't actually speaking to the press or a large audience, but rather, about 10 supporters.

The transcript doesn't do it justice, but it makes it easier to notice the near-constant contradictions. She says she's "given my reasons" for quitting, in the same breath as she says she doesn't feel the need to "explain" her decision. She blasts those who take the "quitter's way out," and then quits.

I've never seen anything like it.

Aww, give her a break. She still had enough coherence to mock global warming as a concept.

it's not just the incoherence of her words; her entire delivery was weird -- panicked/agitated -- that gulping for air. she was freaked about something.

It still looks like she plans on running for national office.

From her speech:

"And there is such a need to BUILD up and FIGHT for our state and our country. I choose to FIGHT for it! And I'll work hard for others who still believe in free enterprise and smaller government; strong national security for our country and support for our troops; energy independence; and for those who will protect freedom and equality and LIFE... I'll work for and campaign for those PROUD to be American, and those who are INSPIRED by our ideals and won't deride them."

As Ezra Klein said, this was not a speech written by a crack political team planning a careful reintroduction into Presidential politics.

Anyone who thinks she can withstand a 14-18 month campaign in a primary where she'd be taking hits every day is sorely mistaken. Clearly the ten months in the national spotlight have taught her nothing about being prepared.

If she runs for President, it will be the craziest slow motion train wreck in US political history. It ain't happening.

Regardless of all the posturing and spinning her "supporters" do, the truth is that this person just isn't very smart, qualified, experienced, or emotionally suited for high profile politics on any level.

The philistines, charlatans, opportunists, cynics, and criminals can wreck havoc upon a complacent, incurious, apathetic, nescient society. Palin's rise is a testiment to that.

All posers evertually fall as more and more light is cast upon them. The only question is whether they do great damage or not before their fall.

Whatever the reason(s) for her resignation - this was inevitable.

Paul (Beluga) does the history...

Her statement was incoherent, bizarre and juvenile. The text, as posted on Gov. Palin's official website (here), uses 2,549 words and 18 exclamation points. Lincoln freed the slaves with 719 words and nary an exclamation; Mr. Jefferson declared our independence in 1,322 words and, again, no exclamation points. Nixon resigned the presidency in 1,796 words -- still no exclamation points. Gov. Palin capitalized words at random - whole words, like "TO," "HELP," and "AND," and the first letter of "Troops."

Hard to run a 2012 campaign with a criminal record from the stories I've read (see bradblog)

What we witnessed is a narcissist who let reality hit her in the back of the head with a legal 2X4 and watched her fancy dreams of occupying the WH explode into a million little pieces.

Her speech reminds me of bad philosophy term papers - if you use enough words, it has to mean something.

Watch the speech or read the text of it. Then keep it in mind the next time you hear Bill Kristol or one of his ilk (who love Palin with all their hearts) being described as "conservative intellectuals."

Palin didn't deliver an announcement so much as she rambled on for about 20 minutes.

Boy, ain't that the truth. I know there's been talk about her challenging Lisa Murkowski in 2010, and that almost certainly won't happen now. But it's a shame, because Palin would make an excellent Republican senator, with her outstanding ability to filibuster.

Posted by: David Bailey on July 4, 2009 at 9:09 AM | PERMALINK

Bad timing for Jonah Goldberg - His column was in the Oregonian, only hours before St Sarah began her, possibly, Aimee Semple McPherson disappearing act. He referred to Sarah as the "It" girl of the RepuG Party. His advice was the usual hunker down as the Guv. Sorry, Jonah, dream on about your Clara Belle, er Bow girl. I think St Sarah has bowed and, possibly, Todd has pulled his fetlock. Needs much more bute and lasix and a looooong time out to pasture.

The lady has a panic atack when she delivers her resignation announcement! How the hell would she have handled that 3 am phone call???

The fact that after looking at eight years of incompetence in action, 47 % of the US electorate did not consider Palin's incoherence a deal killer for the McCain/Palin ticket is just bloody frightening.

Posted by: SRW1 on July 4, 2009 at 9:28 AM | PERMALINK

Worst. political. speech. ever.

In even being attracted to such an incompetent, much of the Republican party has condemned itself in the eyes of posterity.

Gov Palin said that her children supported her decision, and that for them,

"much of it had to do with the kids seeing their baby brother Trig mocked by some pretty mean-spirited adults recently."

I missed this. Was something spiteful said about Trig? I was aware of the dustup with Letterman, but when/where/what else is she referring to?

Posted by: JCB on July 4, 2009 at 10:10 AM | PERMALINK

St Sarah is correct about stopping those Trig comments. What will they say when she has Calculus?

The Palin speech and the various reactions to it are just the latest in the continued downward spiral of conservative politics in America. Because she was the "chosen" one of the rightwing, literally everything she says is golden and beyond reproach, and literally every criticism about her, no matter how well-founded, is apostasy.

Palin could have blamed the evil forces of Ba'al for her political downfall in Alaska and her faithful followers would have nodded in agreement, and said that anyone who called her crazy is just a jealous liberal/Democrat/terrorist/Marxist/fascist. If one liberal blog somewhere had published a photoshopped image of Trig, then every liberal everywhere hates Palin and her family, etc.

What makes the rightwingers dangerous is that they live in a world of their own creation in which everything that their leaders tell them is truth and even the most basic critical thinking skills are absent and frowned upon.

Hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution and we still haven't shed the gene that makes someone batshit crazy. Sad.

Posted by: castanea on July 4, 2009 at 10:30 AM | PERMALINK

This is going to sound almost as crazy as Palin, but I don't think she's actually going to resign. She has three or four weeks before it's official, and you can't doubt that she's nuts enough to change her mind.

By the way, is that young daughter pregnant?

Posted by: Bob Johnson on July 4, 2009 at 10:51 AM | PERMALINK

I don't get why everyone is deriding her speech. Palin clearly states that by quitting she is doing what is best for Alaska -- who can disagree with that?

Posted by: Disputo on July 4, 2009 at 11:00 AM | PERMALINK

You said Palin suffers from arrogance, ambition and conspicuous unintelligence--yes, and I'd add extreme feelings of self-entitlement. What really worries me is now she'll be unleashed upon us in the lower 48, especially the "heartland." She came to my city during the campaign and in fact gave a speech about two blocks from my office. I was seething the entire time until she took her divisive and trashy self out of here. This reminds me of a former Governor of a Midwestern state who made a home video announcing that he would not run for a second term. Everyone knows why and we're still waiting for the emails to his "buddy" to be released. The Palin saga--As The Stomach Turns--continues...

Posted by: Pussycat on July 4, 2009 at 11:08 AM | PERMALINK

Wow. It's been awhile since I heard her speak (I don't watch TV news very often) and I'd forgotten how incoherent she was. Most of that doesn't make any sense, just rambling about freedom and putting government back in its place.

Also: "biologically sound wildlife management for abundance practices- predator control"? Is that the euphemism for "shooting wolves from helicopters"? Because I kind of think it is. WTF.

Posted by: Jabberwocky on July 4, 2009 at 11:11 AM | PERMALINK

I used to teach middle school special ed and I recognize the pattern: there were certain students who would not, under any circumstances, acknowledge themselves as at fault. They confabulated. Under pressure, they confabulated louder and longer. They gave every indication of believng their own confabulations and would stick to their stories (often multiple stories about one incident) relentlessly. They usually lived in a bubble of carefully chosen confederates who never challenged them.

It's a personality disorder: narcissism. There is an awful lot of that going around in the ranks of rightwing politicians.

Posted by: wonkie on July 4, 2009 at 11:19 AM | PERMALINK

The bit about polling the kids was a bizarre detail for her to include - especially since she drew attention to the one "hell yeah!" vote, and hinted there was a story behind it.

If you're trying to shield your kids from media scrutiny, why on earth would you throw out a teaser like this?

The woman is seriously troubled, I think.

Posted by: g on July 4, 2009 at 11:57 AM | PERMALINK

Palin capitalized words at random - whole words, like "TO," "HELP," and "AND," and the first letter of "Troops."

Uh, that's from the transcript released by her office? You know, speakers don't "capitalize" words per se, it depends on what their notes showed and the instructions to, and performance of, the transcriptionist/s.

Aww, give her a break. She still had enough coherence to mock global warming as a concept.

My God, you read my mind sw. The Pt.2 5:24 mark stood out for me. "I don't want any Alaskan dissuaded from politics after seeing this real climate change that began in August." complete with a smirky smile and laughter. Now, following on Steve's observation of near-constant contradictions, this crazy wack-job proudly proclaimed building "a sub-cabinet for climate change" as an accomplishment just 12 minutes earlier.

Posted by: oh my on July 4, 2009 at 12:31 PM | PERMALINK

The rambling, incoherent nature of Palin's speech was due to the fact that her objective throughout was to convince her audience of something that was objectively untrue -- namely that her resigning the Governor's office was an act of high principle when in fact it was the reverse. I am a speechwriter and when your objective is clear, your purpose honest and your motives true there is rarely the need for the kind of dissembling that very quickly turns any speech to mush.

Anyone notice Willow's constant movement? Why is she on "stage" with mom? Does this not invite discussion and criticism? Family First?

This is such a pathetic 'abuse' of her family.

Whatever she winds up doing, you can bet the Money Party will support her decision. Fact is, they may be encouraging her to make this move at this time. Who will be behind the levers of power in Alaska when the lieutenant governor take over? Special interest groups?
