THE WRONG METAPHOR FOR THE OCCASION.... One of the more memorable moments in Sarah Palin's ridiculous announcement yesterday came when she compared herself to a point guard.
Putting aside the fact that this is pretty awful writing, the comparison comes up short in a couple of important ways. First, as John Weaver, a former senior strategist for John McCain, noted, "Good point guards don't quit and walk off the floor if the going gets tough. Today's move falls further into the weirdness category; people don't like a quitter." And second, if Palin still has national ambitions, and I think she does, what kind of message is this for a would-be president? The president, facing "a full-court press from the national level," will just "pass the ball" when the heat is on? For months, I've heard complaints from political professionals that Palin and her team aren't just amateurs, they're too green to even realize they're amateurs. And, of course, her ridiculous claim of asking the children if they want their Mom to quit being Governor so she can help people keep their freedom, or some such nonsense. The fact that Palin (and to some extent Joe the Plumber) is the very model of what at least 25% of the electorate wants as their leader is worse than frightening - it's creepy. Green is being kind. It all smells terribly fishy. If she goes and takes some high paying job in the right-wing hate machine it'll look like she ditched her responsibilities and left the job because of love of money and self. She just killed her own political career-- although maybe she knows something we all don't and that she doesn't have one anymore anyways. They do it to either receive instruction from the coach (at the coach's urging) or to slow down an oppositions "run". Sometimes they just do it because the "team" needs a rest. We are just going to have to wait to see which "play" is being called to see how effective the timeout was. My guess is that given her team (GOP) and it's lack of stellar players, the play either won't work or it will be the wrong play. Either way her team is way too far behind to win. If she hasn't got thick enough skin to ignore blogs and commentary that are critical of her, how will she handle the REALLY BIG problems facing our country? I'd be afraid she would up and quit when the going gets tough because she appears to have serious emotional flaws that can't be whisked away in short order. Let's face it: though everything a president has to deal with during the course of a day in the White House may not make the headlines, the going is tough every day of the week/365 days a year for him/her. At some point I think she will look back on her life and see that being Gov of Alaska was a cake walk and will regret having quit. No one likes a quitter - especially in the White House.
