THE GROWING IRANIAN FISSURE.... The New York Times reports today on a new effort by Iranian religious leaders to question the legitimacy of the recent presidential election.

The most important group of religious leaders in Iran called the disputed presidential election and the new government illegitimate on Saturday, an act of defiance against the country's supreme leader and the most public sign of a major split in the country's clerical establishment.

A statement by the group, the Association of Researchers and Teachers of Qum, represents a significant, if so far symbolic, setback for the government and especially the authority of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose word is supposed to be final. [...]

"This crack in the clerical establishment, and the fact they are siding with the people and Moussavi, in my view is the most historic crack in the 30 years of the Islamic republic," said Abbas Milani, director of the Iranian Studies Program at Stanford University. "Remember, they are going against an election verified and sanctified by Khamenei."

Labeling Moussavi and his allies "traitors" becomes that much more difficult when the "most important group of religious leaders in Iran" is bucking the Ayatollah on election results recently labeled a "divine assessment."

The group's statement came the same day Moussavi published a 24-page dossier online, written by a commission appointed by Moussavi, detailing allegations of electoral fraud. The report "accused influential Ahmadinejad supporters of handing out cash bonuses and food, increasing wages, printing millions of extra ballots and other acts in the run-up to the vote."

Also yesterday, a special adviser to Ayatollah Khamenei accused Mousavi of being a "foreign agent" working for the United States. The WaPo called it "the highest and most direct [accusation] issued by an Iranian official since the June 12 election."

Can an arrest be far behind?

I hesitate to play amateur expert on Islam (I did study it in college), but I'd presume that slander/libel is a sin. Maybe Mousavi should work that angle, since I expect he can credibly claim not to be a American/(Zionist) agent! In any case, this sort of treatment shows the dishonesty and corruption of the current regime. They could at least have just accused him of inciting unrest, which would be technically plausible.

perhaps sarah palin could be appointed a temporary special US liaison with iran, fly over there in the coming week...

she could show ahmadinejad and khamenei how to resign with grace, dignity, and intelligence...

Oh yes, I agree. I heard that Palin once saw Iran from a plane window, so that makes her an expert on Iranian and Middle Eastern affairs, right? Therefore, using her expert analytical skills and keen insight on the topic, she should be able to inject herself into this situation and solve it, post haste.

Of course, if the US had followed the "wise" advice from John McCain et al then these charges would have stuck to Mousavi and his support would have ebbed away.

Posted by: Former Dan on July 5, 2009 at 10:15 AM | PERMALINK

Former Dan - bingo! Obama was shrewd to follow expert advice and not be too supportive of Mousavi! And later, he criticized the regime's handling of dissent as a matter of principle, not as "taking sides". (We don't even know if Ahmadinejad actually would have lost, or just gotten a smaller margin ...)

Conservatives love "intuition" and hate nerdy "expertise", just check out this nauseating paean to Rush:

"accused influential Ahmadinejad supporters of handing out cash bonuses and food, increasing wages, printing millions of extra ballots and other acts in the run-up to the vote."

So the election in Iran was as bent as the election in Lebanon a few days before which the West hailed as a real exercise in democracy. But still no real evidence of fraud on a massive scale.

Wow! Ahmadinejad and Khamenei ARE really the Bush and Cheney, respectively, of Iran. Sucks to be an Iranian citizen living in such an Orwellian universe! -Kevo

First, get rid of the spammer above me. How it got past can only be explained by the holiday.

Now, while I am not claining to be an expert either, and know Sunni Islam more than Shi'a, I believe that in Sunni, at least, such a decision would have people scraping the crumbs off Khameni and deciding between butter and marmalade. Islam has no clergy, per se. (An imam is simply someone who has studied the Qur'an and a group of Muslims have accepted as their leader.) But the ultimate rulings on the proper interpretation is 'a consensus of scholars.' So such a ruling would be undisputable except by a similar group, not a single person, no matter how powerful.

An individual might differ with the ruling, explain why he differed, and hope to change some minds -- as was done when several people disputed the death penalty for apostates. But until they got another ruling they are, basically, powerless.

Is there anyone out there who knows if the same is true about Shii'a?

Is there any reliable information yet on how widely known in Iran these two developments are? The government restricted all press outlets and all reporting in the suppression of the last weeks, and it seems that hardly anybody knows much of anything.

Credit where it is due: So far, Obama has handled this perfectly.
