A 'FUNDAMENTAL MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF GOVERNING'.... Kudos to the Washington Post's Dan Balz for addressing one of the more nonsensical explanations for Sarah Palin's resignation.

Other prospective presidential candidates have decided to leave office. Mitt Romney chose not to run for a second term in Massachusetts when he decided to seek the presidency in 2008. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty already has announced that he will not run for another term next year and is seen as a likely candidate for the 2012 GOP nomination.

Neither Romney nor Pawlenty quit as Palin did, midstream. And Palin's explanation for stepping down was even more inexplicable. She described the abandonment of her duties almost in noble terms, saying that by leaving now she would avoid the temptation that she ascribed to others who have not run again.

"I thought about, well, how much fun some governors have as lame ducks," she said. "They maybe travel around their state, travel to other states, maybe take their overseas international trade missions. So many politicians do that. And then I thought, that's what is wrong. . . . They hit the road, they draw a paycheck, they kind of milk it, and I'm not going to put Alaskans through that."

That is a fundamental misunderstanding of the responsibilities of governing. Every president becomes a lame duck in his second term. The same for governors, since many are term-limited. Do they "milk it," as Palin put it, or do most continue working hard to the end to finish off their terms with real accomplishments?

Well said. Palin decided not to seek re-election, which was almost certainly a bad idea, but would presumably give the governor more of an opportunity to run full-time for the presidency. She's decided, though, that half a term is not only sufficient, but also that meeting her obligations and fulfilling her duties would be a bad thing. Voters are supposed to thank her for quitting half-way through her only term, because lame-duck leaders are, she says, by their very definition, ineffective and wasteful.

In reality, Palin's argument once again points to her confusion about the basics of government. In this case, the governor had a choice. She could be a lame-duck governor who travels around, goofs off, and kills time until the next election. She could quit after two years. Or she could roll up her sleeves, work hard, pursue the policy agenda she claims to take seriously, and do the job.

Is this really that difficult to understand?

"Voters are supposed to thank her for quitting half-way through her only term..."

Indeed they should. Ms. Palin has signalled that she would only extend a half-hearted effort at completing the duties of the office ("milk" it) should she stay.

She even lost her sparks-bedazzled Internet boyfriend, Rich Lowry! And it had to happen to him on the Fourth of July - what a painful twist of "fate"!
That's kind of the end of the line.
I can't figure Sarah Palin out and she's in a sort of twilight zone of her career - such as it is, that's why I call her "Cariblur Barbie."

The Republican party these days seems to be home to some of the laziest, privileged people on the face of the planet - lazy in governing, lazy in diplomacy, lazy in intellectual reasoning, and even lazy in faith! -Kevo

Apparently, St Sarah left her canoe, when she realized she was not on the Yukon River, but the Niagara.

I'm still trying to figure out whether Palin understands the meaning of the term "lame duck." Sanford is a lame duck governor because he cannot run for the office again. Palin is not a lame duck governor because she was not at the end of her term limits. When I heard her speechifying, I knew that she'd written it herself. She really needed a good adviser to proofread it and make suggestions to clarify her talking points. Meg Stapleton is her media person, but if you listen to Meg, she and Sarah Palin are both grammaticaly challenged, although Meg to a lesser degree.

Rich Lowery falling out? Geez, that Inland Passage Christmas cruise with Sarah and Todd joining the NRO staff to party hardy started out ever sooo well.

Meg Stapleton is her media person, but if you listen to Meg, she and Sarah Palin are both grammaticaly challenged, although Meg to a lesser degree.

More to the point, Meg Stapleton is as petty, vicious and grudge-obsessed as Palin, rendering her worse than useless as an advisor. She's supposed to be trying to pull Palin back from her various ledges, not egging her on as she clearly has been doing.

Palin is toast. She was an insult to thinking Americans and the elective democratic process when selected as VP. Now she's just toast. No more words about this never-was-been. Please. Stop talking about her as if she ever mattered to the American political system. Toast. Doesn't matter...

She does not want to be a governor, she wants to be a dictator! Her interest lies in leading the racist, theocratic army in its revolution ala Fox News. Government is the enemy now and she wants to be the Che Guevara of the right.

It's all nonsensical. Nothing the woman said made an ounce of sense. My guess is that she got a very lucrative offer from a cable news station and had to ditch the governor gig to accept it. That's why her press conference was so disjointed and bizarre, and that's why she's kept herself in the news with all sorts of hysteria. She leaves office at the end of the month, her show will be debut in the fall. That's my guess.

Posted by: Saint Zak on July 5, 2009 at 10:44 AM | PERMALINK

I wonder if in her "biography" Sarah's ghost writer will use the line from the Simpsons Episode "Two Bad Neighbors" paraphrasing George Bush Sr's line:

"And since I'd achieved all my goals as Governor of Alaska in one half term, there was no need to finish it. The end.

Posted by: Former Dan on July 5, 2009 at 10:47 AM | PERMALINK

If we don't see an indictment in the next few months then we can assume she stepped down for other reasons.

According to Alaskan reporter Shannyn Moore the federal investigation centers on claims that Palin steered the contract for the Wasilla Sports Complex to Spenard Building Supplies in exchange for the construction and building materials of her home, and the scandal is about to break wide open.

The hot rumor is the feds have been seizing paperwork from Spenard Building Supplies in recent months searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide-open state.

SBS has close ties to the Palins. The company has not only sponsored Todd Palin's snowmobile team, according to the Village Voice's Wayne Barrett, it hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004.

Is it a coincidence that Palin resigned the governorship in the same week that Al Franken became MN's junior senator? Perhaps she "reasons" in her non-linear way that if comedians can become politicians, politicians can become journalists? And journalists--look at Steven Colbert or Pat Buchanan--can run for President just as actors can run for president, and someone, a hero, a visionary leader like her, has to stand up to the Franken rot that threatens the America we love.

So I'm going with the notion that she has a gig lined up at Fox news. When the feds indict her for embezzlement or Trig turns out to be Bristol's baby, the warm bubble of Fox's crazy delusional reality will protect her; "Look at what those liberals are trying to do to me!!!" she will cry to her adoring fans, and they will believe her.

It astounds me that Palin's level of political sophistication is about equal to that of the disengaged good ol' boys/girls who idolize her. "Politicians just suckle at the public teat!" "No more politics as usual (whatever that means)!" "Get government out of our lives!" The only difference between her and the knuckle-draggers who showed up the Teabagging parties is that she somehow lucked into political power in some backwater state on the strength of her good looks and platitudes. And this person thinks she's qualified to be anything more than a manager at 7-11? It's amazing.

I've avoided seeing or reading any of her speech, but today saw some quotes in MoDo's column. I was struck by the total lack of awareness on her part that the point of being elected governor is to, you know, govern. Our Republican friends keep telling us government should be run like a business. To get ahead in any business you first have to do the job you have well.

Also, there was a time when "lame duck" referred only to the period between the election of an incoming official and the expiration of the term of the incumbent. It wasn't the duration of an entire term.

Posted by: Roddy McCorley on July 5, 2009 at 11:11 AM | PERMALINK

Palin/Sanford 2012 may be the republican dream team. They can promise smaller government by not doing their jobs.

Posted by: CDW on July 5, 2009 at 11:18 AM | PERMALINK

I was struck by the total lack of awareness on her part that the point of being elected governor is to, you know, govern.

Phil Nugent has succinctly stated the reason why she sought elective office: "to give jobs to her friends, scam free stuff, and terrorize anyone she was cheesed at..."

Posted by: Davis X. Machina on July 5, 2009 at 11:27 AM | PERMALINK

But she's going to save America! She'll start a nativist, nationalistic party that will split the Republican base from its Washington elites and bring real reform to politics! The political system as it stands is so inherently corrupt that there's no dishonor in walking away from it. Especially when that walk is part of her plan to save America for real Americans.

Posted by: Pudentilla on July 5, 2009 at 11:28 AM | PERMALINK

Wow. I was looking forward to her becoming President, and the quitting after two years to run for Secretary General of the UN.

Posted by: Husker Blue on July 5, 2009 at 11:29 AM | PERMALINK

So, being a "lame duck" is bad. So, then, Palin could never seek a second term where there are term limits, because under her definition, that person is a lame duck from day one. But, if you're not going to seek a second term, then you are also a lame duck. Of course, you would be a lame duck from day one, because you have term-limited yourself. Therefore, Sarah Palin will never seek elected office, because she would be a lame duck. The Nation is Saved! Thank you Sarah Palin!

Posted by: g on July 5, 2009 at 12:04 PM | PERMALINK

Palin's career in elected politics is over. Her lack of credentials and general cluelessness only appeals to the wingnut base.
However, she still poses a threat to Dems, as she now can travel the country, unencumbered by official ethics, raising support and buckets of cash for GOP candidates. She'll be like having Obama or Bill Clinton show up at your fundraiser - more money!

Posted by: CParis on July 5, 2009 at 12:07 PM | PERMALINK

In reality, Palin's argument once again points to her confusion about the basics of government.

Sarah Whackadoodle is confused about far more than just the basics of government.

The existence of she and her supporters is proof there are two species of hairless biped on the planet. Homo Sapiens (us) and Homo Sap (them). "Being Republican" really is a mental disorder.

Posted by: TCinLA on July 5, 2009 at 12:23 PM | PERMALINK

Sarah Palin poses no threat whatsoever to Democrats. In fact, the only people she threatens are mainstream Republicans, and whereas there are relatively few of those in elected office, they do comprise a significant portion of the electorate.

I hope Palin runs as a third-party candidate in 2012. Let her bleed votes away from the eventual Republican nominee. Let the eventual Republican nominee be forced to criticize her lunacy, thereby splitting the party even further.

Although I have issues with many Democratic politicians--what sensible person wouldn't?--I do see that the Democratic party offers the best available leadership for the country on the range of issues that are important to most Americans.

Let the lunatic white rightwingers vote for Palin. Let the wealthy capitalists vote for the eventual Republican nominee. It's not an ideal scenario by any means, but it is the optimal one given the circumstances.

Posted by: castanea on July 5, 2009 at 12:38 PM | PERMALINK

So using her own logic, Palin was a lame duck since Day One.

Posted by: Ohioan on July 5, 2009 at 12:54 PM | PERMALINK

Sometimes I think with these evangelical christian candidates, the whole point of politics is to play out some sort of culture wars drama. Like, by winning an election, you prove that your side, your tribe, is ascendant. The actual governing doesn't matter, it is just the symbolism of the election that matters.

Posted by: J.B. on July 5, 2009 at 1:56 PM | PERMALINK

"They maybe travel around their state, travel to other states, maybe take their overseas international trade missions. So many politicians do that. And then I thought, that's what is wrong. . . . They hit the road, they draw a paycheck, they kind of milk it, and I'm not going to put Alaskans through that."

Except for the international trade mission, isn't this what Palin's pretty much been doing since November 5, 2008?

I just mustered the courage to watch her speech. What an amazing display of pettiness and paranoia. And all the hiding behind troops and freedom and all the palaver that is supposed to justify every right wing delusion. And, as has been noted, all the references to "politics as usual." Palin is a great advertisement *for* politics as usual.

But I think I found the kernal of her problem, listening to one of her sports analogies. She said as the point guard you keep your eye on the basket. To her the basket is personal and individual glory. But that's not how basketball is played. The point guard keeps her eye on the defense and manages the offense accordingly, i.e., analyzing and governing. And when you're driving the lane you have to keep playing despite the elbows that get thrown your way. That, my friends, is her problem as a public official. Her problems as a person are well documented elsewhere.

And the guy who's taking her place immediately becomes a lame duck.

Posted by: Obee on July 5, 2009 at 7:36 PM | PERMALINK

sorry for not having the link from TPM, where a reader/commenter posed a legitimate question:

According to Sarah Palin's explanation regarding the lame duck, milking it, etc... According to the commenter, there are currently 10 Republican Governors who fit that description... What are their thoughts about how Palin views them?

It would be nice for CNN / Fox / MSNBC to interview those governors and have them explain/defend their administration...

Would be fun to watch Republican governors trying to portray themselves as true 'statesmen' yet not make the base mad at them for saying something negative about Palin.

Can someone with influence look into that?
