MAYBE BOEHNER IS SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME IN DC.... One of the hallmarks of a politician who's lost touch with his or her constituents is when the politician no longer knows what's going on back home.

Take House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), for example. Boehner told Fox News over the weekend that the economic stimulus package was "nothing more than spending, spending, and more spending." In reality, the recovery plan also included a massive tax cut, and spending was the point of the stimulus. More importantly, though, Boehner insisted, "In Ohio, the infrastructure dollars that were sent there months ago -- there hasn't been a contract let, to my knowledge."

Boehner really ought to keep up on current events in his home state before making a bogus claim like that on national television.

When U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner told a newscaster Sunday that not a single stimulus-funded road contract in his home state of Ohio had been let, he was wrong.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has OK'd 52 stimulus-funded road and bridge projects at a cost of nearly $84 million.... An ODOT spokesman called Boehner's statement "disappointing."

And Scott Varner noted that ODOT had just OK'd six more stimulus road projects which will cost about $43 million.

Late yesterday, Boehner issued a statement, complaining that the contracting process has been "absurdly slow moving," and reiterating that he preferred non-stimulative tax cuts to government spending.

Boehner didn't (or couldn't) explain why 52 approved transportation projects in four months represents a "absurdly slow moving" process, or why he made a transparently false claim about economic developments in his own state.

It's worse than that. Boehner himself had previously commented on the start of many of these projects.

He's not ignorant of what's happening in Ohio. He's a flat-out liar.

That guy is aptly named eh?

Sure Rep. Boehner. Of COURSE there's no projects going on. That's exactly why I can't go southbound on Rt. 83, due to a bridge repair that is paid for by the recovery act. There's a big ole sign right before the construction, too.

Friggin' idiot....

Uh, because it served his purpose at that precise moment in the 24 hour news cycle.

Boehner is a bronzed pecker-wood, who by the looks of him, has probably spent far too much time in Argentina himself. No surprise then he's willfully ignorant of Ohio.

Every House minority leader is entitled to one flamboyant excess a week . Consideration for personal "Flair" in compounding the total to no more than the total of minutes in a day shall be granted in cases of extreme , extremes , extremist efforts on behalf of liberty . If line one exceeds the amount in line two please add the lines and divide by two .
It oughta be a law

Boehner was speaking metaphorically. He didn't expect to be taken literally.

If we could get Boner and the Georgia version of him, Chambliss, in the same room and start a lie-off, the vacuum could be harnessed and be.....

WORTHLESS!

. . . there hasn't been a contract let, to my knowledge."

What Boehner means is that there hasn't been a real contract let -- that is, a no-bid contract that goes to a contributer to the Republican party.

"The entire process has been absurdly slow moving . . . ."

Of course it is. If we were still doing things the way they were done in the Bush administration, then all that would be needed would be to check with the RCCC, the RSCC and the RNC (though with Steele still in charge the RNC, getting a timely answer back could be a problem).

A little known secret about John Boehner: He is excessively tanned so that people can't see how much he blushes when he makes his idiotic statements.

On the home page of the Ohio Department of Transportation (www.dot.state.oh.us), in the middle of the page, there's a giant graphic and a title link to "Ohio's Transportation Stimulus Project Information." There, you can see the ODOT stimulus projects, and where they're happening. In Boehner's district alone here's what I found:

  • ODOT; State Route 503 resufacing $1,494,623 Authorized

  • ODOT; US 36 Pavement Rehabilitation Darke
    $150,000 Awarded

  • ODOT; SR 571 Pavement Rehabilitation Darke $510,000 Awarded

  • ODOT; SR 118 Bridge Rehabilitation Mercer
    $255,045 Authorized

  • ODOT; MIA IR 75 Resurfacing Miami $1,800,000 Awarded

  • ODOT; Rehabilitation on U.S. Routes 27 and 127, and State Route 122 Butler $2,852,000 Authorized

  • Butler County TID; SR4 Bypass Butler
    $5,500,000

  • ODOT; State Route 732 Resurfacing Preble
    $2,148,000 Authorized

  • ODOT D8; US 40 Culvert Reconstruction Preble $150,000 Awarded

For a grand total of $14,859,668.00. Almost $15 million dollars worth of road construction, roughly 18% of what's being spent in Ohio, paid for with stimulus money in his district.

Perhaps Boner is upset that the stimulus bill did not include new toupes.

But, in olden days, DeBartolo would have paved half the state on his no-bids with Boner being passed a "finder's fee".

Posted by: berttheclock on July 7, 2009 at 9:57 AM | PERMALINK

there hasn't been a contract yet, to my knowledge

So Boehner supports a fast, front-loaded stimulus NOW? I don't remember him saying that back in January...

Posted by: Ohioan on July 7, 2009 at 9:59 AM | PERMALINK

shortstop stole my thunder: Boehner actually bragged about the stimulus funding some project about a week ago.

So he's not out of touch at all. He's a liar. Period. End of discussion. Case closed.

Posted by: Mark D on July 7, 2009 at 9:59 AM | PERMALINK

or why he made a transparently false claim about economic developments in his own state.

oh please, that's an easy one. he's rarely held to account for his statements/actions.

Posted by: linda on July 7, 2009 at 10:01 AM | PERMALINK

Sure he pulls a Boehner from time to time. But in his defense, he's irretrievably stupid.

Posted by: chrenson on July 7, 2009 at 10:01 AM | PERMALINK

I think somebody ought to email Sisyphus's comment to the Congressman. Either he seems to be invincibly ignorant.

Well, that list includes a whale of a lot of "authorized" and a tiny dribble of "awarded" so, as much as it pains me to even partially agree with Boehner, it would seem he has a bit of a point. He was talking about "contracts being let" after all, and "authorized projects" do not put a single worker to work.

How much faster would tax cuts put people to work?

Posted by: Grumpy on July 7, 2009 at 11:14 AM | PERMALINK

Based on the statements he is making I would say Rep B read the same Quinnipiac Poll mentioned above. he knows voters are frustrated in OH and he wants to capitalize on that. Who cares if its all a lie - these guys have no scruples.

Posted by: rawls on July 7, 2009 at 12:38 PM | PERMALINK

So will a majority of the good people of Ohio start paying attention and do something about him at the next election, or just keep re-electing him like good little sheeple? Enquiring minds would really like to see some actual change in that area.

Posted by: Curmudgeon on July 7, 2009 at 1:12 PM | PERMALINK

Boner is not confused Steve, he's just not honest. You know that.

"...or why he made a transparently false claim about economic developments in his own state."

oooh! oooh! mister kotter, pick me, pick me. it's cus he's a lying sack of shit.

Posted by: mellowjohn on July 7, 2009 at 1:53 PM | PERMALINK

Boner is a tool (how apt) and a fool!. He's really quite ridiculous, and the worst spokesman for his party.
He is at least on a par with Harry Peed.

Tax cuts don't get roads built. They keep them from being built and maintained. That's why so much road work is needed, dumkopf.
