STEVE KING'S LONE VOICE OF MADNESS.... The U.S. House voted on a measure this week to instruct the Capitol Visitors Center to honor the role slaves played in building the U.S. Capitol. It seemed pretty uncontroversial -- the Visitor Center will now feature a plaque acknowledging the work of those who constructed the building against their will. The vote was 399 to 1.

The lone voice of dissent came from Rep. Steve King (R). And why, pray tell, did the right-wing Iowan stand alone in opposition, knowing full well it would pass anyway? Because he wants the Capitol Visitors Center to feature the phrase "In God We Trust," and didn't like the idea of Democrats honoring the work of slaves while he's trying to mix church and state.

His statement on this read, in part:

"Last night I opposed yet another bill to erect another monument to slavery because it was used as a bargaining chip to allow for the actual depiction of 'In God We Trust' in the CVC. The Architect of the Capitol and liberal activists opposed every reference to America's Christian heritage, even to the extent of scrubbing 'In God We Trust' from the depiction of the actual Speaker's chair in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"This is just the latest example of a several year effort by liberals in Congress to scrub references to America's Christian heritage from our nation's Capitol. Liberals want to amend our country's history to eradicate the role of Christianity in America and chisel references to God or faith from our historical buildings.

"Our Judeo-Christian heritage is an essential foundation stone of our great nation and should not be held hostage to yet another effort to place guilt on future Americans for the sins of some of their ancestors."

Notice phrases like "yet another" and "place guilt," which suggest a degree of annoyance on King's part about acknowledging slavery at all.

This from a clownish, far-right Republican whose record on race is a genuine disgrace.

Even for a right-wing wackadoodle that reasoning doesn't make any sense. Poor Iowa.

now, see, i almost feel sorry for poor Steve. the way Palin, Bachmann, Inhoefe, Sanford, and Steele have been raising the bar for crazy lately, its hard out there for a wingnut! you can barely imagine a position or statement so crazy that you are assured of getting media attention. just a little nuts wont cut it anymore, no way. its hard work remaining at the head of the pack (of rabid weasels).

I had to explain the difference between the two Kings to the third baseman the other night. Halfway through I just dissolved in giggles and could not go on. The richness of material in the GOP caucus is incredible.

"well, you see, there's one King who is a pompous, self-righteous Republican in Congress who is a crazy right-wing racist. And the other King, well, he's an arrogant, camera-baiting Republican in Congress who is a ranting wingnut racist. I can't believe you can't tell them apart!"

And Christianity has such a superb track record in this area already:

once upon a time in america, there were (at least) two kings, a black one and a white one.

the black one wore a white hat and brought liberation. the white one wore a black hat and -- no check that ...

the white one wore a dunce hat and brought racist ignorance and STOOPIDITY to everyone he came in contact with, almost reducing the whole state of Iowa to rumored imbecility. tsk.

iowa actually has a notable and honorable role in re to slavery. it was the only state of the missouri compromise to reject slavery; and the iowa supreme court issued one of the earliest rulings in favor of a missouri slave who had been given permission by his owner to work in iowa to earn money to purchase his freedom. once in iowa -- a 'free state' -- his rights as a free man were secured, despite kidnappers' efforts to return him to missouri.

and this from the 1854 inaugural address of James Grimes, the newly appointed governor:

"The removal of that great landmark of freedom, the Missouri Compromise line, when it had been sacredly observed until slavery has acquired every inch of soil south of it, has presented the aggressive character of that system broadly before the country. It has forced upon this country an issue between free labor, political equality and manhood on the one hand; and on the other, slave labor, political degradation and wrong. It becomes the State of Iowa - the only free child of the Missouri Compromise - to let the world know that she values the blessings that compromise has secured to her, and that she never will consent to become a party to the nationalization of slavery."

Steve King is an embarrassment to the people of Iowa and its history.

Mr King, as someone who grew up reciting the Pledge without "under God", I agree that I and others from my era should be sent, immediately, to Re-Education Camps. Could we be sent somewhere which has spas or do you prefer the plains east of Council Bluffs and pup tents in mid-August?

My, if only "under God" had been inserted from the beginning, WWI and II could have been cake walks. It must have that "Gott Mit Uns" which extended things.

I can walk to my Office window and see King's district, Council Bluffs. People on my side of the River refer to it as "Counciltucky."

I don't think the town is particularly racist, just dumb.

Iowa does have a courageous history in civil rights, as Linda notes, including pioneering equality in higher education. King, however, wants a memorial to the other camp. He'd like to see plaques honoring all those courageous "Sundown Towns" in the South and Midwest, especially the ones in his district.

WTF? Oh, now I get it. When the 10 or 12 remaining rational GOP base members go to look for the "Christian heritage" in establishing our Constitution and federal government and find none, they'll say "That Steve King was right. Those damn liberals are "scrubbing" Christianity from our history!"

Apparently, "liberals" circa 1789 had been chiseling off God's role on historical buildings already. You have to admire the code speak though. Phrases such as "chiseling off" and "scrub clean" sure do bring to mind Egyptian pharaohs. Clever bit of Bible baiting.

Normally I just assume right-wing assholes are lying to appease their corporate owners, but in this case, I really don't think King has any idea what the founders thought of religion or that 'In God We Trust' only became the national motto in 1956 (and also, thanks to Jeb Bush, the Florida state motto since 2006.)

I'm also fairly certain he doesn't appreciate the assumption, per Christian canon, that Jesus himself would have likely wretched at the idea of money and God being entangled.

Actually, three of Iowa's five congressmen are Democrats (two liberal leaders, one geriatric Blue Dog). Tom Harkin, Iowa's Democratic senator and Russ Feingold's good friend, doesn't get as much publicity as the eye-socket-rolling Grassley, but he's one of the best and hardest working in the body. Democrats currently control both houses of the state legislature and the governorship. The rightwing areas of Iowa are losing population as they gain corn and pigs, while the progressive neighborhoods are growing. King has very real hopes of being the czar of a big empty. My heart goes out to the forty per cent liberal population of the area.

Is "Architect" capitalized in King's original statement? That's a curious usage. "Architect" is after all an English translation for the Greek demiurge, which denoted the creator of the material universe, considered as a subordinate of the ultimate divine presence. (The Demiurge was the metaphysical villain of ancient Gnosticism.) It also could be read as an allusion to the "Great Architect of the Universe," a Freemasonic locution for God.

i'm glad y'all can say good things fer iowa -- i salute you. my native state of north carolina -- not so much.

nor my adopted one, oregon, for that matter -- a wretched history of "sundowner" racism...

Posted by: neill on July 9, 2009 at 10:37 AM | PERMALINK

Mr King, if you wish to help racial relations, perhaps, you could take your bull dozer down to New Market, Iowa and eradicate their "Sundown" law. At least, it was still in effect in 1985, when the a City Council member told an African-American band, they could play on as the Council had suspended the law for the night.

However, as neill has said, be careful Northerners in your piety. When a study was done on "Sundown Towns", a large majority of them were in Illinois. And, neill is correct about Oregon. Blacks were excluded in the first State Constitution. One African-American immigrant had to move northward to Washington. Last major conclave of the Klan was in Astoria. Many old timers in Portland refuse to call the former Union Avenue by the renaming to Martin Luther King. Once, given directions by a matron, I could not find Union Avenue on my Thomas Guide. Remember Brown vs the Board of Education meant the BofE of Topeka, Kansas, not Birmingham, Alabama.

The practioners and proponents of slaveholding in the North and South saw themselves as pious, god-fearing Christians, who were not averse to quoting their Bibles to morally justify the ownership and maltreatment of human beings, which they considered divinely ordained and sanctioned— most certainly not a "sin." So slavery is as much a part of America's Christian heritage as whacko diatribes from hypocrites like Rep. King.

"Architect of the Capitol" is a public office. A whole department , actually.

Iowa is like its neighbor state, Wisconsin. WI gave us both Joe McCarthy and Bob La Follette. Take a guess who had the greater influence on the country. Hint: He wasn't a plumber.

Posted by: Michael7843853 on July 9, 2009 at 11:37 AM | PERMALINK

I'd leave "on race" out of the last sentence.

Posted by: sacman701 on July 9, 2009 at 12:00 PM | PERMALINK

I wonder of King was ever part of the Klan.

Or part of an all male country club.

Or voted for because of the color of his skin.

Or considered less empathetic due to his race.

Or given jobs on his staff to someone because they live a certain sexual lifestyle.

If so I definitely believe he is racist.

Wait, the vote was 399 to 1. Plenty of Republicans voted for this, and none voted against it other than Steve King. So I guess his definition of "liberal" is "Everybody in the House of Representatives Except Steve King"
