BURRIS MAKES THE RIGHT CALL.... There was a scandal when he agreed to accept the Senate vacancy. There was a controversy when he tried to actually fill the vacancy. And there was another scandal when we learned the details surrounding how he came to be offered the appointment in the first place. And today, another long national nightmare will at least get an end date.
Burris stood no realistic chance of winning either a Democratic primary or a general election, and his departure will effectively end the political aspect of the Blagojevich scandal, pending the trials and appeals. There was some question, though, about whether Burris might seek a full term anyway, putting party leaders in the awkward position of actively opposing a Democratic incumbent. In this sense, Burris' retirement is arguably the best decision he's made since the ordeal began. As for next year's open-seat race, Republicans are likely to rally behind Rep. Mark Kirk, while the Democratic field will feature state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, Chicago Urban League president Cheryle Jackson, and businessman Christopher Kennedy. I bet he gets full Congressional health benefits for his family and a chunk of Congressional retirement. Plus another entry on his mausoleum. Posted by: ScottW on July 10, 2009 at 10:44 AM | PERMALINKI've been outspokenly against him since he took the seat, and I feel that a lot of the good work he's done in the state and his legacy (crazy tombstone memorial and all) has been tainted by his desire to add this additional line to the resume. But now that he's done this, I'm ready to forgive a little of the madness. And on a purely political gamesmanship terms, this has turned out well for Illinois Democrats. If someone who had more of a bright future in the party had been appointed by Blagojevich, they would have been forever tainted by the legacy of G-Rod's touch, no matter how clean the appointment actually was or how well the Senator performed his job. Now our Democratic candidate can run with a clean slate, and no matter how messed up the D party is in my fair state, the Rs are still in a much, much worse state. The bad news is, Burris can always refer to himself as "Senator Burris" from here on out. Bet it'll look spiffy on his mausoleum/monument. Mark Kirk I'm still hoping that either Alan Keyes or Jim Oberweis will enter the GOP primary. Illinois politics is at its very most entertaining when one of them (or maybe both? It's good to see Burris try to salvage his considerable legacy. But the Dems aren't going to be able to sail into the seat. Giannoulias has been given a pass so far by the MSM regarding his sleezy activity as a banker. That won't be the case in 2010. To echo Comment 1, just how much will his little ego trip cost the taxpayers? Is he now entitled to Congressional retirement benefits?
