LET'S PARSE THE WORD 'QUIT'.... John McCain, making his 10 gazillionth appearance on a Sunday morning show, was asked on "Meet the Press" this morning about his former running mate's decision to resign half-way through her only term as Alaska's governor.
"I don't think she quit. I don't know if there was a quote promise [to the people of Alaska to continue serving as Governor]. But I do know that she will be an effective player on the national stage."
Maybe McCain has some other definition of "quit"?
Sarah Palin sought a job; she accepted the job; and now she's decided to leave the job before its natural end. McCain may prefer a more gentle synonym, but whether or not she "quit" hardly seems open to debate.

All true, but David Gregory let him get away with it. I changed the channel and realized why I never watch Meet the Press.

If President McCain says she didn't quit, then god damn it she didn't quit. So shut up about it.

So no one misses this "exclusive" from the Washington Times:

EXCLUSIVE: Palin plans to stay in politics
By Ralph Z. Hallow (Contact) | Sunday, July 12, 2009
EXCLUSIVE:
ANCHORAGE, Alaska | Brushing aside the criticisms of pundits and politicos, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said she plans to jump immediately back into the national political fray - stumping for conservative issues and even Democrats - after she prematurely vacates her elected post at month's end.
and especially the last grafs in the story:
When a photographer prepared to take pictures of the interview, Mrs. Palin, wearing open-toed shoes, said laughingly, "Don't get my toes in the picture - they are green on the bottom."
Indeed they were. She said the marks were grass stains from mowing her lawn the previous day.
Foot washer must have had the day off;>

He thought Gregory asked about Honduras and like his black-hearted friends he equates quit with coup. Since the coup in Honduras wasn't, the resignation in Alaska wasn't.
So there.

Perhaps McCain would prefer the term Shannyn Moore used: "she aborted her term" as governor.

She couldn't hack it. She couldn't swim with the big boys ( a phrase, not meant in a misogynist way). She wanted to mix it up and got taken down by political enemies. Who knows. What we do know is that she should NEVER again be elected to office. Not finishing your term of governor, quitting, is a major no no!

Palin's rambling comments were a little more subtle than "I quit".
What she really said was that many politicians in the past have discovered that they didn't want to do their job anymore, so in effect they quit doing their job, but kept the office. Instead of doing their job, they started traveling around the country, using up state money and getting paid for doing nothing they were really elected to do.
She discovered herself in a similar situation, and decided to actually quit.
But she still quit. Hopefully she will travel around the country and council politicians who are not doing their job to actually quit.
Maybe start with McCain?

I don't know if there was a quote promise...
Perhaps President McCain needs to reacquaint himself with the concept of "oath of office." Alaska's reads in part:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that... I will faithfully discharge my duties as [governor] to the best of my ability.
I'd call that a promise. I suppose one could argue that in Palin's case, walking away from one's duties does in fact constitute the best of her abiltity.

She didn't quit. She just engaged in a self-promotion related program activity. I mean, she said she wasn't a quitter even as she was giving herself this promotion to a higher calling, and that's good enough for me in this topsy turvy ol' world.

Almost as foolish as parsing the word "is" or when oral sex isn't really sex.
Now you see what conservatives were laughing about for years.

mccain also became agitated when he described the "attacks" on palin's family..
that's rich coming from the guy who used to tell the joke about clinton's female attorney general janet reno..
being chelsea's father..
you know...because the kid was sooo ugly..

I'm fairly certain that McCain's definition of the word "is" is also different than mine.

McCain is in lala land as usual. Next week, he'll say she quit, and the week after, he'll say she didnt quit. I think the definition of his m.o. is squirrely.

Considered he thought she was capable of running the greatest Superpower this planet has ever seen, we can be assured that his judgement is not at all sound.

She knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America.
The question isn't: Why is Palin off the stage?
The question is: Why is McCain still on it?
I mean really...
How consistently wrong do you have to be before they send you to pasture these days? Does saying a dozen times: the fundamentals of our economy are strong, into the teeth of a major recession count for nothing?

Roddy McCorley: "Perhaps President McCain needs to reacquaint himself with the concept of 'oath of office.'"
The oath of office does not bind anyone to a full term. Any office-holder can leave anytime, for whatever reason.
And when they do, regardless of what they're moving on to, it's called "quitting," and they have to deal with the consequences.

From the date that she quit on, Palin should always be addressed as the "Quitter from Wasiller".

John McCain:
"I don't know if there was a quote promise [to the people of Alaska to continue serving as Governor]."
It's sort of inherent in campaigning for and being elected to a public office, Senator McCain. But pray tell us, what were your designs when running for the presidency?
Posted by: SRW1 on July 12, 2009 at 1:21 PM | PERMALINK
Why is McCain even asked anything about Palin anymore? It seems pretty clear that he knew next to nothing about her before selecting her as his running mate, and further (and this seems far more relevant) - it is fundamentally impossible for him to answer any question about her, her antics and drama and nonsense (etc. etc. etc.) in any honest way because it will show the HORRID LACK OF JUDGMENT and the grotesque narcissism of his picking her. He can't answer anything about her without making HIMSELF look even worse. (And how that's possible, I don't know, but it is.)
I appreciate all the folks that watch the Sunday shows and relay them online, b/c I can't stand to watch them.
And @SRW1 - heavens you just gave me chills. And NOT the good kind.

Always tell a big bald face blatant lie first. Especially if it is framed to make you look generous about a character question.
Everyone will focus on that so peeps will think all the subsequent little lies he tells are truths.
McCain and the corporate media have been acting this scene for years.

a more gentle synonym for quit? Hmm.
Bug out? Take a powder? Hit the road? Vamoose? Skedaddle? Flake off?
Aww, I quit!

How well I remember (35 years ago next month!) when Richard Nixon decided to be an effective player on the national stage in a way that didn't include remaining President.

For McCain there is nothing quite like the warm blanket of self-delusion. For McCain to admit that Palin quit would be to admit to his own 1st Class error in judgement in selecting her in the first place. Can't have that. What a Putz.
Posted by: sparrow on July 12, 2009 at 3:31 PM | PERMALINK
She didn't quit; she broke the contract. Now, is that better, Senator McCain?
Posted by: exlibra on July 12, 2009 at 3:57 PM | PERMALINK
Can we now (if not already) bury the idea that McCain is or was very much, a straight-talking, sincere politician? But he was so cute on SNL.
Posted by: demoraptor on July 12, 2009 at 4:05 PM | PERMALINK
All you libs should just lay off McCain right now - have you forgotten he was a POW? Hey, that kind of rhymed. You know: POW.....now!! Not feelin' it? Ahhhh, you libs have no sense of rhythm. I bet Eminem started small just like that.
I agree it's pretty funny watching the elaborate contortions politicians in general, and McCain specifically, put themselves through in order to avoid the unavoidable conclusion. You can bet if Palin had been a Democrat, McCain would have screamed "QUITTER!!!!" into the camera until the lens was flecked with old-man spittle. Boehner would have proclaimed himself too disgusted at such a graphic demonstration of failure to comment. Inhofe would have linked Palin to Hitler and Saddam Hussein.

Why oh why do the people of Arizona continue to pay this goober. He hardly knows what day it is anymore and displays the worst judgment. Way past time to replace this self centered, self seeking codger. "I don't think she quit"????? Hell, we are all Alaskans now. Did I mention I was a POW so I know about war and how to win 'em.
When is he going to be hired by MTP? He spends nearly as much time there as he does in the senate.
Posted by: bjobotts on July 12, 2009 at 5:09 PM | PERMALINK
bjobotts,
everyone is paying this goober, not just the people from Arizona. He receives his military pension, his senate salary, and he's been receiving $1938.00 social security check, his salary for board memberships, speaking engagements......
Oh, I guess, he will have a casket made of "dollar bills y'all"
Posted by: annjell on July 12, 2009 at 7:29 PM | PERMALINK
@QuintTheSharker @sparrow - Bingo!
No one can expect McCain to admit he made the stupidest decision of his career, one that cost him any possible chance at the presidency, by choosing Palin as his running mate. He'll try to parse anything she does, including running over a 96 year-old granny with her SUV, as A-OK!
Posted by: CParis on July 12, 2009 at 7:50 PM | PERMALINK
She quit.
Posted by: Danny on July 12, 2009 at 8:55 PM | PERMALINK
Why does McCain say the word "quote" in every interview. It's annoying. And when he puts up his fingers, it's disturbing. Crazy man talking.
Posted by: terence on July 12, 2009 at 8:59 PM | PERMALINK
I watched it.
His verbal output has a fake sincerity.
I always was annoyed by it.
When I hear McCain, I am just reminded that McCain supported Bush's war of choice
in Iraq, enriching cronies of Halliburton, while all that time neglecting Afghanistan.

Here in the pacific NW we do get limited coverage of Alaskan politics. I am surprised I never heard about Palin's campaign pledge to: "try the governorship out for a year or two, and if I am not having enough fun, by golly, I'll just quit."

Hey Al, explain to us what conservatives were laughing at Newt Gingrich about for years, he's the moron who said oral sex wasn't really sex. Clinton was smarter than that, he just denied it happened. I guess he figured it wasn't anyone else's business, and Hillary didn't want to do it. You're clueless.
Posted by: FitterDon on July 12, 2009 at 11:07 PM | PERMALINK
As long as we are talking about Clinton parsing the word "is" in his deposition, Bill Gates parsed the word "was" in his, and Repubs seem to have little trouble with that.

It's the apex of maverickiness to seek a job; accept the job and then leave the job before its natural end.
Quitting? Hardly. It's a maverick's prerogative to change her/his mind. This is an homage by Sarah Failin to the uber maverick, John McLame.
The Gov of AK thing was just a joke. A humorous diversion that a whole state, hell... country could take part in.
She may have more fun with everybody again. It's just hard to know what a maverick has up her/his sleeve until the moment when they tell us whether or not we've been fooled again.
