THURSDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:
* With Senate Republicans ruling out a filibuster, Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination is on track for a confirmation vote in early August -- before the chamber breaks for recess.
* The U.N. has approved new sanctions against North Korea. (Let me guess -- Kim Jung Il will consider this an "act of war.")
* Former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson gets an earful from Congress.
* Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) raised a few eyebrows during today's hearings when he said he was looking forward to doing "that crack cocaine thing" with Sen. Patrick Leahy and Wade Henderson, the president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. He then conceded that he "misspoke."
* That lawsuit filed by the Birther in the Army resisting deployment? It's already been thrown out.
* I'll have more on this in the morning, but the AP has gone into some additional details to back up the "$1.5 trillion" figure. The explanation, however, isn't entirely satisfying.
* John Yoo, still lying.
* Former Reps. Mickey Edwards (R-Okla.) and Chris Shays (R-Conn.) have conceded that, during the Bush years, congressional Republicans put their party's interests over the Constitution. Nice of them to notice.
* NASA has refurbished video of the original moon landing.
* A right-wing Republican candidate for the state legislature in Virginia told an audience recently, "We have the chance to fight this battle at the ballot box before we have to resort to the bullet box."
* Rep. Joe Courtney (D) of Connecticut makes a good case for health care reform, by telling his congressional colleagues, "When I listen to the hysterical descriptions of what is in this legislation, I would remind many members to look at themselves in the mirror. Because what they are presently entitled to as members of Congress is exactly what this legislation is proposing to create for all Americans."
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Other than degree, how much different is Obama?
During the Obama administration, Obama is putting his interests ahead of the oath of office he took to protect and defend the Constitution and to uphold the laws of our country. All in the name of political expediency!
Every day that Obama continues to resist investigations of the illegalities of the Bush Criminal Enterprise is another day that he is in abdigation of his oath of office!

Oh, Jeffie, were you "just jokin" again? Chris Matthews found Frank Ricci (funny he doesn't worry about pronouncing HIS name correctly like he does CHEENEY) was just so compelling that he may have caused the Judge to lose three REPUG votes...HA! Time to pull the plug on HARDBALL and some other crapola on MSNBC...sadly COUNTDOWN is going that route as well...pretty soon they will just be the counter to FAUX NEWS and no better than they are...what a heritage!

C-Street emerges again.
Ex-Wife of former U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering (R) Mississippi, filed a lawsuit this week claiming his extramarital affair ruined their marriage.
The Ex said at the time of the affair, the congressman was living at the "Christian living facility on C Street."

Here's a genuinely modest proposal.
Can the Democratic majority in the House and Senate please promise that if they fail to pass something reasonably close to "universal health care", they'll immediately move to change their and their Republican colleagues' own health care coverage to more closely resemble what the rest of us "enjoy"? Or, even better, that they legislate that they forgo any health care coverage whatsoever?
If this became necessary, I suspect within a year or two we'd see useful legislation passed, after the reality of our suddenly mutual situation had a chance to sink in.

I wonder how Fox News is dealing with Rep. Edwards and Rep. Shays confession about putting their party's interest ahead of the Constitution. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it won't get any air time.

"...I would remind many members to look at themselves in the mirror...." -Rep. Joe Courtney D-Conn.
He forgets that many members see only several lobbyists when they look into a mirror.
The whole Sontomayor hearings affair was merely a warning of what would actually happen if a real Liberal were ever nominated for the SC. Despite that the majority of Americans are liberal, and the legislature is predominately liberal, conservatives would perform mass suicides at the suggestion. Even the constitution and Bill of Rights are liberal...but the term has been so demonized that a liberal Justice would cause such an uproar among republicans...although I think there are a couple of neocons already on the court.
Paulson was well compensated for leading the Goldman-Sachs swindle of the treasury where billions are sent out without anybody knowing who the money went to. $18 billion in bonuses going out after the supposed collapse while a huge number of Americans are losing their homes and families?? Easy to see who runs the legislature.
John Yoo should stop the pretense and just put on his Jap uniform...the one he wore when torturing captive GIs...complete with sword. If that wasn't him then it had to be his exact genetic twin.
Giving the justification to authorize the death and brutality that resulted from torturing Muslims makes him just as guilty as those who brutalized their victims. F*#k Yoo. Even if our gov refuses to put you behind bars, the people will shun you as much as we did OJ...here's hoping you meet his same fate.

* That lawsuit filed by the Birther in the Army resisting deployment? It's already been thrown out. -- Steve Benen
Well, for one thing he had no case anymore, now that his deployment orders (which he had, specifically, requested) have been rescinded and nobody is asking him to go anywhere. If he ain't going and isn't being pressed to go, then what he thinks about his Commander-in-Chief is totally irrelevant.
OTOH, his civilian job, having gone, will *stay* gone, one hopes. Couldn't have happened to a nicer arsehole and in a more promising economical climate. (And yes, I *am* a vindictive FM K9 and proud of it)

I liked this from thinkprogress.org, by Matt Yglesias, having watched the hearing and Jeff Sessions giving her a hard time:
"I would pay good money to hear Sonia Sotomayor say, “Senator Sessions, I think it’s ironic to be facing these questions from a man whose judicial nomination was rejected by this very committee on the grounds that he’s a huge racist.”
UpdateSeriously, though, when the Republican Senate Conference was meeting, did nobody say "if we're going to oppose the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, maybe we shouldn't have a giant racist leading the charge?" This seems like a situation in which Mel Martinez might have been able to offer a useful perspective. Or they could have called up JC Watts out of retirement. What were they thinking?"

I am so sure, Bob Barr is now an independent - and was in the running for the latest presidential campaign.

A note to Catherine Crabill:
If you insist on going "there" you should know I have a lot of "2nd amendment rights" stored around my house, and most certainly know how use them better than you. In fact, most of my "2nd amendment rights" group less than an inch at a hundred yards.

Open the Liberal Floodgates
By Craig Crawford, at CQ Politics
"President Obama is free to go hard left with his next Supreme Court appointment. That's the lesson of the failed attacks on nominee Sonia Sotomayor during this week's Senate confirmation hearing.
Racially-tinged inferences, snide liberal bashing and the shameless pandering to anti-intellectual sentiment that once won the day for Republicans are now falling flat. The Sotomayor nomination has proved to be yet another test case for the efficacy of traditional conservative attack lines.
Republicans might have hoped to use this hearing to put limits on how far the President can safely go in picking liberals for future openings. Instead, they showcased just how narrow and out of touch their political base has become.
It is stunning that the GOP did not learn this lesson in the election of Barack Obama.
Until Republicans get past calling 1-800-HATE there will be fewer and fewer voters
on the other end of the line."

Dow invests in algae ethanol.
Some for fuel, some for feedstock for plastic.
In other news, the U.S. now gets more than 3% of its electricity from non-hydro renewable sources.
And, if you surf the web for a while, you will come across projects to convert idle hard drive and idle auto factories to manufacturing solar power devices. That's something that Obama proposed when campaigning for president, so he'll be able to take credit if the projects work out.

for the Republican Party, frequently featured on Fox News, that right wing echo chamber
of the Republican party, he of the mysoginist type--actually said this about Sonia Sontomayor:
"Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something, or just before she’s going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then."

Anybody catch that article in the NY Post?
http://www.nypost.com/seven/07162009/news/regionalnews/dem_health_rx_a_poion_pill_in_ny_179525.htm?page=2
Surprised there hasn't been more comments on it because the "data" in there is being quoted all over the place...here's my counter to their claims - I'm curious if anyone could double check them for me.
So, in the Post's example:
Single Wall Street Earner: $285,000
New health care tax hike of 1%: $2,850
That's incorrect - as the bill states: You're charged the surcharge, as an individual, on the income that exceed $280k.
So he'd be taxed 1% on $5k = $50.
Second Post example:
Couple making $1.5m
New healthcare tax hike: $81,000
Again, incorrect - they'd be charged $5000 on the first $500k, $7500 on the second $500k and finally $8100 on last $500k. So the total would be $20,600 rather than $81,000.

If you don't trust North Korea's interpretation, perhaps you can get Cuba to sign on that it's harmess fun.
BTW Iraq lost hundreds of thousands of children before the invasion/occupation to 'sanctions'.

Hahaha.
My suggestion to Crabill isn't about a phallic symbol of testosterone, nor about an ignorant eye-for-an-eye mentality. I would only like to point out to the bible-clutching gun-toting base she's shilling to, that they aren't the only ones toting guns (or reading the bible). If she's suggesting war on America, she'd better bring all the "thicker, longer 2nd Amendment Rights" she can, because she and her base will need them. I'm one liberal who won't be raising a white flag of surrender when Crabill's minions march across the Virginia state line. Tsch indeed.

On pages 16-19 of the health care bill you will find language that abolishes private health care options, even though Obama promised the American people they could still keep their own private care if they wanted it.
Public "option" indeed.
And rationing? Peter Singer is now calling it necessary.
Yes, the truth is coming out as liberals see the chances of their socialist dream coming true.

I would recommend that we deny any form of health care coverage whatsoever to the members of congress, so that they have to pay for 100% of all their medical expenses, just to give them a feel for what it might be like for a goodly percentage of their constituents.

I really cannot believe how you can continue taking such an ignorant mocking tone in this matter. Do you honestly not remember when GWB put NKor on notice that they were next in line after Iraq for a good macho pre-emptive ass-kicking with the Axis of Evil speech? Perhaps you missed that Obama reiterated GWB implied war declaration with his recent "grave threat" remark? And has it passed your notice that SKor violated the armistice agreement?
All NKor wants are security guarantees from the US, a return to the situation under the Clinton admin. Unfortunately, Obama prefers to continue the chest-beating posturing of the GWB admin.

Standing up to this tyrant by the Obama Administration if not "chest beating". I could care less if we embargoed any and all prostate cancer medications.
The only time the North Koreans showed their fighting skills was in executing our poorly combat trained units coming in from Japan in June of 1950. They shot down our troops who had surrendered. Thereafter, the only medals earned by those Generals next to Kim Jung were of the "Being Overrun Kind" from Inchon to the Yalu. But, for the hordes of their brethren from China pouring over that river, there would only be one Korea, today. To hell with Kim Jong II and his "campaign" ribboned cowards. The Tigers of South Korea showed their worth in our ill conceived thrust into another country's civil war. The North Korean government has only proven to be a despicable cowardly despotic destroyer of their own people. Kim Jong could care less if his people starve while he watches porn and plays with flab. May he never rest comfortably in something called Hell, whereever and whatever it might be.
